Visit The Banyan Tree Of Lahaina

“Thankful People Are Happy People” with Pastor Greg Laurie

One of the historic Lahaina things to do downtown is to visit the Banyan tree. Planted in 1873, this famous banyan tree is huge at over 60 feet tall and has 12 major trunks that make it look like several trees but is actually just one tree. Located on Front Street in Lahaina and covering an area of over 200 feet, it provides shade for over 2/3 of an acre and has many benches set so you can sit in the shade.

Perhaps the most popular thing to do in town is the Old Lahaina Luau. Widely regarded as the best and most authentic Hawaiian luau in the entire Pacific, feast your eyes on the rhythms of hula dancing and fire breathing heroics while trying a delicious collection of tropical dishes and drinks.

An alternative is the Myths of Maui Luau which is located at the Royal Lahaina Resort. Your entry ticket gets you an all-inclusive Island-style buffet, complimentary cocktails, and the show itself.

Go Bar Hopping & Dancing In Paia Town

The historical town of Paia is a great spot for a night of bar hopping, live music, and dancing. After a day in the sun, take a break and enjoy everything Mauis North Shore has to offer visitors after dark. A hand full of Paia Towns restaurants and bars offer happy hour from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm daily.

We suggest starting your happy hour at Milagros for a tasty signature margarita or an ice-cold Maui Brewing Company beer. Pair this with the daily happy hour food special before wandering across the street to Café Des Amis where happy hour continues. Here, visitors can enjoy half-priced drinks and yummy snacks to nosh in a charming courtyard with nightly live music. We love the refreshing Lilikoi Margaritas served here, and you can pair it with the Mediterranean Plate for tasty perfection. Roll into Rock & Brews before 6 pm and try a happy hour beer on tap. They have the most extensive selection of international and craft beers in town. The restaurant also sports a full bar and large-table seating for big gatherings.

Kid & Family Friendly Things To Do At Night In Maui

9. Maui Friday Town Parties

A town party may not seem like a kid-friendly event. But I can assure you that the Maui Friday Town Parties are not your typical block parties.

These outdoor Maui events occur on Friday nights are actually organized by the county economic development department. These parties are free to attend and are held in a different Maui town every Friday. This gives everyone a chance to experience the fun for themselves.

Much like a festival, these parties include live music, food, and local artisans selling their wares. It is a perfect way to integrate yourself into the community and experience the towns friendliness while you all enjoy this huge party.

These events are marketed as community-minded and kid-friendly. So you dont have to worry about bringing anyone in the family along.

Where To Stay On Maui

The best area to stay in Maui for a beach vacation is South Maui or West Maui .

We spent most of our time in Kahana on the West Coast. Its a quieter and more affordable area a 10-minute drive north of popular Kaanapali Beach.

We stayed in a condo at Kahana Reef, which is great value for oceanfront accommodation. We saw whales and turtles from our lanai and the sunsets are stunning.

The island is small enough that you can explore all these Maui attractions from one base. Its about an hours drive between West and South Maui.

If you have time, though, its worth spending a few nights in less-visited East Maui or Upcountry.

We loved Hana Kai Condos overlooking an empty black sand beach in Hana. Staying here for a night or two is the best way to experience the Road to Hana as you can visit the busiest sights before the day-trippers arrive.

See our Maui itinerary for more suggestions of places to stay in Maui.

Stroll Along The Sands Of Big Beach

Arrival Day in Maui, Hawaii Island Staying in Lahaina

Contributed by Jess from Im Jess Traveling

You will arrive at Big Beach a bit further north, also known as Makena Beach and Oneloa Beach.

One of the best beaches in Maui, Big Beach is a beautiful, wide sandy beach that offers impressive views and a long shoreline.

The main draw is the undeveloped beauty and wide-open spaces, so you will find space and privacy regardless of how busy the beach is.

You will often find boogie boarders at Big Beach as it has a powerful shore break.

When the surf is high, it is challenging to get in and out of the water. Inexperienced swimmers can get severely injured as the waves can be powerful, so always treat the ocean with caution.

Climbing up the rocks on the north side of the beach gives you epic views of the massive beach below.

Continuing down the other side of the rocks leads you to Little BeachMauis most famous nude beach!

A few food trucks operate in the parking area if youve worked up an appetite after a long day of sunbathing and playing in the water.

As of March 2021, it now costs visitors $10 to park at the entrance, but there will be no fee if you park outside the gates and walk in.

A short drive up the coastline along South Kihei Road will take you to more popular stunning beaches known as Kamaole Beaches One to Three . The word kamaole in Hawaiian means barren, for the once dry coastlines of South Maui.

Take Surf Lessons In Kihei

Contributed by Monica from Planner at Heart

Kihei in South Maui is known as one of the best spots for beginner surfers, explaining the abundance of surf schools.

Located next to Kalama Park is Cove Beach Park where the surf break has tiny, gentle waves perfect for beginners.

Even with plenty of surf schools to choose from, its best to book and reserve your lesson in advance.

Most range in price from $60 to $100 for an hours lesson, with private lessons ranging from $150 to $200. If youre travelling with a group, call around and ask what options are available for group bookings.

During our last Maui trip, we rented a house in a Kihei neighbourhood with friends that happened to be within walking distance to Kalama Park.

We booked a surfing lesson, and while walking back to our house, we learned that our instructor lived directly across the street. He came over on the night we rented karaoke equipment and sang songs with us.

Thats the beauty of Kihei, Maui, and the Aloha spirit!
