Transportation / Getting Around
La Romana transportation options are simple and clear thanks to its small size: taxis, shuttles and excursion buses.
Passengers will find taxis and shuttles at the docks to take visitors to Casa de Campo, the Marina and Altos de Chavon. Taxi rates are often negotiable, so ask for a price before getting into the cab.
In our experience, negotiating taxi rates in a cruise port is a risky business, especially at the end of the day when the ship is almost ready to leave. We recommend taking an excursion bus whenever possible.

Whats more important is the wet season, which runs from June to November. Even in these wetter months, there is less than a 20% chance of rain on any given day, and afternoon showers tend to be short and quickly pass.

The Best Things To See And Do In La Romana For Cruise Ship Passengers
La Romana has a cruise port, which is about a 25min walk from town. All beaches and other attractions require transportation.
Typical excursions for cruise ship passengers cover one or more of the following:- beach relaxation at Saona Island or Catalina Island
- beach getaway at Bayahibe or Dominicus
- explore Altos de Chavón
We have visited La Romana only once and it was a rainy day. Instead of getting rained out at the beach we waited for a break in the clouds and then walked into town to check out how the locals live.I still have the best beaches and attractions section further down on this page, but sadly this is only second hand information. Anyway, I hope you find it useful.
First, let me start with our 15min walk into town. The way is easy to find as there are very few roads and I think it would be hard to get lost here. Just to make sure, here is a map and I have added some waypoints that you can use in your favorite maps app.
After the bridge, the urban area starts and the traffic gets more chaotic. We continued further into town and walked all the way to Parque Del Obelisco where a tall obelisk with beautiful, but sadly weathered, paintings is standing.
We explored the area around there and found more beautiful flowers, monuments and a supermarket.
La Romana Cruise Port: Tips Attractions And Beaches
The La Romana cruise port is in Dominican Republics third largest city. It is one of the few active cruise ports in the country.
It is mostly used by Carnival cruise ships because the company built the port. But this popularity is rather limited because La Romana is a small port.
Carnival makes a small number of stops there throughout the year. They are typically eight-day southern Caribbean cruises that embark from Florida and that also visit Grand Turk, Aruba and Curaçao.
Cruise visitors may find that the main attraction in La Romana is the resort village of Casa de Campo, a 7,000-acre complex that features golf, tennis, skeet shooting, equestrian, beaches and more. It is accessible from cruise ships via taxis and excursion buses.
Like other major destinations in Dominican Republic such as Punta Cana and Puerto Plata, La Romana is a destination that emphasizes plenty of activities in confined areas.
