Things To Do In La Romana Cruise Port

Shopping Wine And Food Tasting

What’s at the La Romana Cruise Terminal?

Ive been to La Coruna many times and this is one of my favorite ports of call for shopping and eating out.

Only a 5-10 minutes walking distance from the port of La Coruna, youll find Rúa Real with its beautiful galerias, offering a variety of gift shops, clothing and shoe stores, and a few blocks away, Rúa Orzán that has the best bars and restaurants. The famous beach, Playa del Orzán, is located only a few minutes walk from the street.

Galicia is known for its award-winning wineries, vineyards and wine cellars spread across the region. If you want to try the regions premium wines, you should book one of the wine tours offered by local tour agencies or your cruise line. I joined a wine and food pairing led by a sommelier at Hotel NH Collection A Coruña Finisterre as part of a cruise ship shore excursion, and the overall experience was amazing. This hotel is located next to the Marina, only a 5-minute walking distance from the dock.

How To Get To Amber Cove Dominican Republic

Amber Cove is the newest cruise port in the Caribbean. It brought cruise ships back to the Dominican Republic after almost 30 years of absence.

Carnival Corporation spent $85 million creating Amber Cove on the north coast of the Dominican Republic and it has since welcomed over a million cruisers. The first 3,000 guests arrived aboard the Carnival Victory in October 2015. It has since become a popular port of call on many Eastern Caribbean cruise itineraries.

The only way you can visit Amber Cove is by booking a cruise that includes Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, as a port of call on the itinerary. It is exclusively used by Carnival Cruise Line and its sister cruise companies, including Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn and Costa Cruises.

Amber Cove is reached along a private pier so cruisers do not have to queue up or use tenders to get ashore. Visitors are greeted by Caribbean music and local dancers to make you feel welcome the moment you step ashore. For cruisers with mobility issues, there are golf carts with local drivers to transport you around.

How To Explore La Romana On A Cruise

Cruise passengers wondering what to do on a cruise to La Romana will find that some attractions are better to enjoy with cruise excursions. That’s the case if you wish to explore the highlights of Santo Domingo, enjoy a beach break in Catalina Island, or kayak in the Chavón River. But there are experiences that cruise visitors can easily enjoy independently or on their own.

You can easily visit the village of Altos de Chavón, take a beach break in the resorts of Bayahibe and Dominicus, or a walk around downtown La Romana at your leisure. Here are the four possible ways to discover La Romana:

  • Book a Shore Excursion

Cruise ships dock on the mouth of Rio Dulce . Two large cruise ships can berth simultaneously on two quays . The eastern quay has a pier for cruise ships up to 1148 ft long, while cruise ships up to 820 ft long can dock the western quay.

The western quay is a mixed industrial and cruise pier with very basic services and amenities. By contrast, the eastern dock is for the exclusive use of cruise ships and has an excellent open-air cruise terminal.

Beaches Near The Port

Catalina Island Cruise Port
This video explains the best time to visit the Dominican Republic and avoid the annual hurricane season. |

A Catalina Island beach break for five hours has a starting cost of $95 per person with discounts for children. This beach break is more expensive than most because of a 35 minute road ride.

Saona Island is accessible by boat from Bayahibe and is popular for its beaches and excursions on catamarans and speedboats. Lucky tourists will be joined by dolphins that swim and leap nearby. Like Catalina Island, this excursion cost about $95 per person but includes an open bar. Again like Catalina, visitors take a bus ride followed by a boat ride.

Visitors may have better luck and spend less money by going to a beach on their own. Several beaches are near the cruise docks and accessible by shuttle or taxi depending on the location. They include Casa de Campo and a 10-minute taxi ride to Bayahibe Beach.

Two of the best beach options for anyone taking a taxi are Playa El Caleton and Playa Bayahibe. El Caleton is close and decent. Bayahibe is farther and better.

Playa El Caleton is just less than two miles from the cruise terminal and a better choice for anyone who wants a quick visit. Bayahibe is a 25-minute drive and has more to offer. Its also often available as a cruise excursion.

Two smaller options are Playa Caleta at five miles and Playa El Minitas at four miles from the terminal.

La Romana Cruise Port

La Romanas other ´port of entry` for tourists, next to the airport, is the cruise port. The cruise port is situated at the junction of the River Chavon and the Caribbean Sea and lies between La Romana and Casa de Campo. This particular port has a central channel and two berths. On the west side lays the West Berth, which serves the cruise ships as pier as well as for loading tons of sugar and molasses for the export from the nearby sugar cane fields. On the other side is the East Berth, exclusively for the landing of cruise ships. The port is owned and operated by the Central Romana Corporation and was extended in 2002.

The Port of La Romana was built 1890 and was originally made of wood and used for 25 years mainly to export tropical wood in various kinds like mahagony, cedar or guyacan. From 1912 on, the production of sugar cane, which was exported to Puerto Rico to make sugar out of it, used the port more and more. Until 1984 it was one of the largest destinations for the sugar cane export industry. The diversification of the operating company and the rising tourism in the region led them to rebuild the pier as a cruise and tourist pier with bars, restaurants, shops and many more facilities in their terminal. Finally the second tourist terminal was built in 2002. Nowadays the port operates more than 100 cruise ships in one season and brings a continuous flow of tourists to La Romana and the region.

Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, is in the Caribbean, so the climate is typically hot and sunny all year round. Average temperatures range from 77°F to the low 90sF .

Whats more important is the wet season, which runs from June to November. Even in these wetter months, there is less than a 20% chance of rain on any given day, and afternoon showers tend to be short and quickly pass.

In the winter months, from December to May, Caribbean cruises are particularly popular and are the best months weather-wise to visit Amber Cove. Daytime highs are in the 80s. Sea temperatures are warmest in August.
