Cliff Dive At Black Rock

Known locally as Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock to the tourists, this 30-foot-tall natural cliff at the north end of Kaanapali Beach has become the site of a Maui tradition: the daily cliff jump.

Every evening, just a the sun sets over the island, a diver leaps from the cliff into the ocean, leaving onlookers dazzled. If youre brave enough, try it for yourself.

The Molokini Crater is a partially submerged volcanic crater just off the island of Maui. The back wall is a popular place for scuba diving with opportunities to spot sharks, manta rays, dolphins, and more. The inside reef is blocked from winds and provides a great place for snorkeling. There is visibility up to 150 feet. You can spot a huge variety of colorful fish including Hawaiis official state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapuaa

Drive Around The West Maui Mountains

For a shorter preview of the winding roads and beauty you can expect along the Road to Hana, follow Highway 30 north from Kapalua for jaw dropping views around the islands northernmost point. Stop at one of the many fruit stands for a smoothie and delicious Maui Gold Pineapple and pull over at mile marker 38 for a short hike down to Nakalele Blowhole. The contrast of high cliffs and deep blue ocean is stunning. Take your time, soak in the views and enjoy the journey!

Local tip

Take your time walking down . Dont go too close to the actual blow hole. Careless visitors have been seriously injured here and even killed!

Catch A Sunrise At Haleakala National Park

One of the most popular things to do on the island of Maui involves waking up in the middle of the night and traveling up the side of a volcano, but youll get rewarded with the most beautiful sunrise. Haleakala National Park has a visitors center located at 9,740 feet above sea level and you can park there and watch the sun come up over the clouds. Its a breathtaking experience. Youll have to make a reservation now with the National Park Service on the parks website. Once you have your date, just make sure to set your alarm for plenty of time to make the drive. You want to arrive at least 30 minutes before sunrise and make sure to bring layers of clothing and even blankets because it is cold at the top.

You can visit the park at any time of day if you dont want to do sunrise. Sunsets are also pretty spectacular up there and there is a lot of exploring that can be done during the day throughout the park. Your entrance fee is good for a few days so explore more than just the summit. Hike along the Haleakala Crater and explore the black rock formations of the dormant volcano throughout the park.

Get Caffeinated At Grandmas

Venture to Upcountry Maui and stop at Grandmas Coffee House for a hearty breakfast, hot cup of local coffee, and to talk story with your neighbors. Grandma began roasting and blending organic Maui coffee in 1918, and the tradition stuck. Four generations later, theyve got it down to a science, including growing, harvesting, processing, and roasting the coffee entirely themselves. Located in Keokea not far from the Kula Botanical Gardens, venture here on a Saturday or Sunday to try the cornbread eggs benedict. Perfect stop on your way back from Haleakala.

Looking for interesting things to do in Maui that dont involve beaches, jungles and waterfalls? . Then make a beeline for Lahaina. Hundreds of years ago, this was the capital of Maui Loa the alii nu , and was, in fact, the royal capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from 1820 to 1845, when it reverted back to Honolulu.

Stroll around the town and discover vestiges of the past like the Baldwin House , the old Court House, the old Prison, and a lot of other old buildings that can be a surprise for anyone who thinks Hawaii is just poke bowls and surf wax.

Makawao Galleries & Shopping

Makawao is considered to be one of the most visited towns of Upcountry Maui. What used to be an old cowboy town filled with paniolo is now home to many amazing galleries filled with working artists, unique gift shops, and many fantastic dining options. While roaming the streets of Baldwin and Makawao Avenue, be sure to check out some of the incredible galleries filled with paintings, sculptures, blown glass, woodcarvings, handcrafted jewelry, and more.

Many of the shops sell locally made goods, and some offer great consignment finds. As you take in the scenery of fantastic artwork and peruse the shops seeking out little treasures, be sure to save time for the delicious fresh-baked creme puffs at Komoda Bakery. These delightful baked pastries sell out fast, so you will want to hit this spot early! Some other great options for grabbing a bite to eat are Pollis, Sip Me Maui, Habibi, and a variety of food trucks located in the courtyard across the street from Rodeo General Store.

However, if its a taste of the rich history of this historic cowboy town that youre looking for, look no further than the Makawao History Museum. You will find this museum tucked between the little shops that line the east side of Baldwin Avenue. This small but charming museum chronicles the history of Makawao from its establishment in ancient Hawaii to its rodeo culture.

If youre visiting Maui during 4th of July, make sure to head to Makawao Town for their lively annual parade and rodeo.
