While we love visiting new cities, we also like to spend time exploring the suburbs to get a better feel for the local culture and more access to nature. On a recent trip to Seattle we decided to spend a day in Kirkland, a suburb on the eastside of Lake Washington less than a 30 minute drive from downtown.
We chose Kirkland for a day trip because it offered everything we were looking to experience farm to table restaurants, luxurious spas and an easily accessible waterfront area.

Take A Sightseeing Cruise
The 90minute Kirkland Lakes Tour by Argosy Cruises is great way to learn about the different neighborhoods and get spectacular views of the areas attractions. Just seeing Mount Rainer glistening in sunlight made this tour worthwhile.
What made this tour so enjoyable was the very knowledgeable tour guide who gave us a great commentary throughout with local anecdotes. As we went past the affluent neighborhood where Bill Gates grewup, she told us how his rise to success is seen as a millionaire to billionaire story by the locals.
The guide pointed out homes of millionaires along what has been dubbed as the CEO row for the large number of homes belonging to executives of Fortune 500 companies. The style of these homes is referred to as knocked down architecture as previous buildings have been knocked out to build these structures.
The Huskies stadium and 520 Bridge which is the longest floating bridge in the world are two other noteworthy attractions. We really enjoy sightseeing cruises of this type as it gives us a different perspective to the sights we see by land.
Visit The Kirkland Corridor
The Kirkland Corridor is one of the most amazing tourist attractions in the area. Its just under six miles of corridor that takes you through the heart of the city. We recommend taking the Interim Trail which is ten feet in width and the path is covered in crushed gravel. The trail will take you from the Park & Ride area in South Kirkland to the Totem Lake Business District. While on the trail youll discover some of the amazing amenities that Kirkland is so famous for with a birds eye view.

Mediterranean Kichen Kirkland Washington
Mediterranean Kitchen is a small, unassuming Lebanese-Mediterranean restaurant that serves wonderfully spiced and intensely flavored dishes from the region, often inspired by old family recipes from Lebanon. They serve regional classics, tried and tested dishes even those not familiar with Mediterranean cuisine would recognize, such as falafel or moussaka. Falafel is ground chickpeas mixed with onions, garlic, parsley and spices, and moussaka is an eggplant casserole made with cauliflower, onions, tomatoes and garbanzo beans, served with feta cheese, garlic sauce, and fresh basil. The portions are huge, but the dishes are healthy and light. All dishes come with soup, garlic bread, and heavy Turkish coffee. Dont skip dessert, as their baklawa is fabulous.

Wilde Rover Kirkland Washington
Going to an Irish put always means good fun. At Wilde Rover, they not only offer great dinks and lots of them, but they also have excellent music by popular local bands, and the food that is far from your traditional pub grub. They take their food seriously here. You will be treated to delights such as Smithwicked Clams and Grilled Wild sockeye salmon soaked in apple-curry puree sauce. Wilde Rover is spacious and cozy, and its a great place to come with a bunch of friends, but on Saturday and Sunday when they serve their legendary brunches, you should bring the whole family. There is a lot of choose from, but when in an Irish pub, go for the traditional Irish fare with two eggs, black and white pudding, Irish sausage, house-cured bacon rashers, baked beans, grilled tomato, home-fried potatoes, and Irish soda bread.
