Visit A Piece Of American History

Nestled within an unassuming neighborhood in Irving, the Ruth Paine House Museum owns a footnote in American history far greater than youd think at first glance. It was here that on Nov. 21, 1963, Lee Harvey Oswald spent the night before allegedly assassinating President John F. Kennedy. Today, the museum is a step back into the early 1960s. Vintage furnishings and appliances preserve the house as it looked during this critical moment in history, while actors play the roles of Ruth and Michael Paine and Marina and Lee Harvey Oswald. The only way you can visit the museum is to reserve your spot on a tour, so make sure to do so before you stop by.

The museum sits near the Irving Heritage District, home to the 1912 Heritage House Museum and a historic train depot in Heritage Park. Cap off your exploration of the district at the Big State Fountain Grill, an old-fashioned diner that serves burgers, sandwiches, and handmade milkshakes.

Go On A Romantic Gondola Ride

Gliding atop the still waters of an urban canal, the long wooden gondola and its striped-shirt-wearing pilot look like it has been plucked from the waterways of Venice. Yet you dont have to go to the northeastern coast of Italy to cross this experience off your bucket list. Cruise down Irvings own Mandalay Canal past slanted terra cotta roofs and in the shadows of stone bridges on one of the gondola tours with Gondola Adventures. Pick from one of several tours at all times of the day, including an exquisite dinner cruise that features three courses of delicious Italian fare. After your tour, find an empty spot on the Lovelock Bridge to leave a reminder of your time on the canal.

Of course, there are other ways to get out on the water. Mandalay Canal feeds into Lake Carolyn, which you can explore on a kayak, stand-up paddle board, or an aqua-cycle. If youd rather have someone else do the work, opt for the Lake Carolyn Cruise on a covered Lear boat. Book your rentals, or tour, here.

Jump Ahead 10 Years At The Ruth Paine House Museum

On the outside, the Ruth Paine House looks like any typical home in the 60s. However, walking inside this house is where you will learn more about the Kennedy assassination and how the hospitality of one woman entangled her in a tragedy.

Through holograms, a recreation of the house, and the stories of Ruth Paine, we gain more insight into the Kennedy assassination. Ruth Paine was a normal woman who met Marina and Lee Oswald and let Marina and her daughter live with her. Lee Oswald stayed over at Ruths house the night before the assassination. Walking through this restored house takes you back in time and you get to connect with the peoples stories in a way I did not expect. Make sure to make a reservation ahead of time.

Stroll Along The Mandalay Canal

If you want a refreshing and peaceful surrounding, then stroll along the Mandalay Canal and escape the city.

Just a few minutes walk below the urban area, you can see the unique architecture and old charm along the Mandalay Canal, where the carpenter designed it to reflect the native setting of waterfalls and streams.

The Venice Canals inspire the place, and you can go through different restaurants, shops, and hotels, with a scenic view of waterfalls.

The canals construction began as functional waterways to control flooding, but the channels became the beautiful Las Colinas icon.

Various restaurants surround the canals, which offer open-air seating, and it is the perfect place for night gatherings as the shimmering lights reflecting off the canal waters.

You can bring your pet in the walkway as it is pet-friendly, or you can watch the people in the gondolas cruise along the canal.
