Things To Do In Hyde Park Ny

Evening: Dinner At The Bocuse Restaurant

View from Vanderbilt Mansion Hyde Park New York – A Relaxin’ Moment

Hyde Parks most famous attraction might be the FDR buildings, but its most delicious attraction is certainly the Culinary Institute of America.

And while the FDR Historic Site will definitely kick you out before dinner time, the Culinary Institute will welcome you to a delicious meal when night falls! Reservations at these restaurants are highly coveted, so be sure and reserve far in advance. I recommend The Bocuse Restaurant for some French-styles fine dining, but all are excellent.

At Bocuse, you get a three-course prix fixe menu, so start with their specialty: a black truffle soup with a tasty bread hat. This dish brings a whole new meaning to the phrase, Ill eat my hat! Eating your hat this way is delicious because the bread falls into the warm soup and gets all gooey and melty. YUM!

Then you can get a little decadent for your main course with a perfectly medium rare Wagyu beef. After all, were going for decadence here, and nothing says decadent like eating a cow that was in all likelihood fed a diet of gold straw spun by a millers daughter every day of its life before it was brought to your table.

24 Hour Tip

Dont tip! Its not permitted because the waiters are all students. Im usually a big tipper because I like to defy stereotypes about single women tipping poorly, but in this case believe me when I say to leave the tip in your pants.

Kensington Palace And Gardens

Kensington Palace became a private residence for English royalty in 1689. The last king to reside in the palace was George II, and it was here that Queen Victoria was born and, years later, received news of her accession. The State Apartments are open to the public and include an exhibition of coronation robes and the Queen’s Gallery with its numerous royal portraits.

Other highlights include the spectacular Queen’s Staircase, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1690, and the quarters of Queens Victoria, Mary, and Anne, along with their personal possessions. Admission includes lovely Kensington Gardens, once the palace’s private gardens and laid out in 1728 by Queen Caroline.

The grounds feature a superb sunken garden, flower walk, and fountains. Afterwards, be sure to pop into the Palace Pavilion Restaurant for a spot of tea , or grab a snack in the café. Picnics are also allowed in the gardens, and guided tours are available.

One of several properties formerly owned by Frederick William Vanderbilt, the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site is a spectacular 200-acre estate with landscaped grounds and a 54-room Gilded Age mansion. The mansion itself was built in the late 19th century, but work on the estate began in 1764, and the property serves as an excellent example of the changes that occurred in America after the Civil War. Most of the mansion’s rooms are furnished just as they were when the house was occupied by the Vanderbilts, and an hour-long guided tour is included in the price of admission.

    The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

The Reservoir is one of the most popular spots in the park.

The one billion gallons reservoir was built in the 1860s as a backup water supply for the city while the Croton Reservoir System was shut down for two weeks for repairs.

The Reservoir was permanently decommissioned in 1993. It was no longer needed because of a new underground water tunnel.

There is a dirt jogging track that goes around the water .

It was a favorite spot of Jackie Onassiss to run while she lived in New York, so the Reservoir was renamed in her honor in 1994.

Walk along the east side of the Reservoir. It is approximately a 3/4 mile walk until you reach the 97th Street Transverse where the last stop is located.

The Albert Memorial: Tribute To A Royal Romance

    Val

The extremely ornate memorial to Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha , Queen Victoria’s consort, is located in Kensington Gardens and was built in a neo-Gothic style. Albert is seated under a richly decorated canopy standing 190 feet high, holding in his hand the catalogue of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Around the pedestal are 178 marble Neoclassical reliefs of artists and men of letters of every period. At the corners of the pedestal are sculptured groups symbolizing manufacturing, engineering, commerce, and agriculture, and at the outer corners of the steps are other groups symbolizing the continents of Europe, Asia, Africa, and America.

    Morning: Homes Of Fdr

No, thats not a typo, Internet Stranger! FDR had more than one home on the family grounds in Hyde Park, and were going to get to visit both of them today. You can find all the most up to date visitor info at the Franklin Roosevelt National Historic Site website here. If you really want to see all of the best things to do in Hyde Park, youll need to spend two full days here to take in all the attractions. But I think this itinerary gets you to the best parts.

If youre visiting Hyde Park from NYC, its easy to get a cab to the FDR site at the Poughkeepsie train station. Just take the Metro-North train from NYC to Poughkeepsie first. You cant miss the cab stand just outside! The only way to visit FDRs homes is to book a tour with a park ranger at the visitor center, so be sure to do that as soon as you arrive.

Youll learn so much about FDR at the National Historic Site that I couldnt possibly fit everything into one post. But I can fit in

    Three Fun Facts: FDR

    1) How Long Did FDR Have this House?

Basically his entire life! Of course, before he was born, it belonged to his parents, and in fact it was technically his mothers home for almost all of FDRs life. She died only four years before he did, so he was only the literal homeowner for those four years. But FDR spent a lot of time here, even though, or perhaps because, it belonged to his mother.

    2) What Are the Coolest Things Inside the House?
    3) What Was That You Said About Homes?

    The Wellington Museum: Apsley House

The first Duke of Wellington bought Apsley House after his famous victory at Waterloo. The Duke made numerous alterations, most notably adding the Waterloo Gallery, where many of London’s most lavish banquets were held. The building was opened as the Wellington Museum, a branch of the Victoria and Albert Museum, in 1952, and houses magnificent collections of paintings, including Velázquez‘sWaterseller of Seville, along with numerous gifts presented to Wellington after the war.

Some 83 of the 200 pictures in the collection came from the Spanish royal collection and were captured by Wellington at the Battle of Victoria in 1813 and later given to him by a grateful King of Spain. Other artists featured in the collection are van Dyck, Correggio, and Rubens, as well as Dutch genre paintings and contemporary British paintings, including Wilkie’s Chelsea Pensioners Reading the Waterloo Despatch, portraits of his comrades at arms, and Napoleon with his family.

Informative audioguides are available, and an on-site shop sells related souvenirs and gift items.
