Walk Across The Hudson In Highland Or Poughkeepsie

Best things to do in the Hudson Valley, NY

Did you know that you can walk across the Hudson River? Well, you can. Head to Poughkeepsie for a walk across the worlds longest elevated pedestrian bridge. Opened in 2009, the bridge sits 209 feet above the Hudson and spans 1.3 miles. The views from the bridge are spectacular on either side. Come for the sunset views.

Hiking At Harriman Or Bear Mountain State Park

Another package deal, Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks sit next to each other on the southern edge of the state, and, at just an hour from Manhattan, are also two of the most visited. The trails here are well loved by city dwellers who want a quick escape into nature . Harriman, the second largest of New Yorkâs state parks, has over 200 miles of wooded trails to explore, with two lakefront beaches and two public campgrounds . Closer to the river, Bear Mountain has elevated trails that offer scenic views over the Hudson, which are especially beautiful in the fall.

Rossis Deli Poughkeepsie Ny

There are Italian sandwiches, and then there are Italian sandwiches that make you want to roll over into a happiness-induced food coma. Rossiâs Deli in Poughkeepsie makes the latter on their own crunchy homemade bread, layered with freshly cut meats and homemade mozzarella. For the non-sandwich eaters, they also have tasty salads and the classic Italian âfood in a caseâ items .

You can travel to the estate by train from NYC to Poughkeepsie train station and then take a cab, or by car.

The house can only be accessed by a guided tour for $20, but you can walk the several miles of trails on the grounds for free. Its a lovely way to spend an afternoon and there are many places to eat and drink in Poughkeepsie.

Sample Wine At A Valley Vineyard

The oldest wine-making region in the country, the Valley is home to some of the nations top wine producers and the quality of their vintages rivals whats produced on Long Island and in the Finger Lakes. From traditional wines like Chardonnay and Cabernet to fruit liqueurs and hard ciders and dessert offerings , theres a wine to suit every palate. Looking for something new? Try Clinton Vineyards Cassis, a black currant wine, or the Candy Ass Red from Glorie Farm Winery, which is made with Concord grapes.

Enjoying The Great Jack Olantern Blaze

This is weird and wonderful and good for kids and adults. There are more than 7,000 Jack oLanterns carved and arranged in vignettes.

You stroll along a path from one scene to another, with synchronized lighting and soundtrack to add to the effect.

There are dinosaurs, an enormous spider web, an underwater scene complete with a giant sea serpent, a parliament of owls, plus lots of human-made things like a windmill, a medieval castle, a bridge, a carousel, the Statue of Liberty, and much more.

Practical Tips: Great Jack oLantern Blaze

The original Great Jack oLantern Blaze is held at Van Cortland Manor, an historic home in Croton-on-Hudson not too far north of New York City. .

It goes from late September to late November. Buy tickets online for a timed entry, but you can take as long as you like when you are there. It sells out, so I recommend buying tickets far in advance.

Getting to the Great Jack oLantern Blaze

The easiest way to get to the Great Jack oLantern Blaze is to drive.

If you dont have a car, you can take the Metro North from Grand Central Terminal in New York City on the Hudson line to Croton-Harmon station. From there, you catch a connecting Bee-Line Bus , take a local taxi, or walk .

Ride The Catskill Mountain Railroad

Westbrook Lane Station55 Plaza Rd, Kingston845.332.4854

Chartered in the early 1980s, the all-volunteer Catskill Mountain Railroad provides rail rides along six miles of track originally laid for the Ulster and Delaware Railroad around the turn of the 20th century. Pulled along by a steam engine, the train chugs past the scenic Esopus Creek and offers close-up and stupendous views of the Catskills. A stop at the circa 1900 Phoenicia depot allows passengers to visit the Empire State Railway Museum, which is housed in the building. Look out for the seasonal rides, like the Polar Express, the Rails of Terror, and the Easter Bunny Express, which are guaranteed to delight the little ones.

Get A Drink At Lunch Nightly

“Wow.I had great expectations for Lunch Nightly. When I took my first bite, it knocked me right on my ass. I could not ask for a more perfect sandwich. I yearn for the next opportunity to go there. What can you say about a pastrami reuben? Simple, right? Outdated maybe? ha! How about a pastrami reuben when the bread is PERFECT, toasted, crispy, delicious and can stand up to the meat when the pastrami is tender, peppery, not overly fatty and gushing with flavor when the sauerkraut is present, delicious, tangy, but not overwhelming the sandwich when the cheese is melty, flavorful and in perfect proportion when the mustard is noticeable, has a nice bite to it and perfectly accents the reuben? This is what you can expect at this formidable cafe. I can’t wait to try it again. They have a fantastic patio in the back for outdoor dining. I wait, patiently for either warm weather or Omicron to go by the wayside. But I may need to go grab some take-out in the meantime or I fear I may have withdrawal symptoms.DO CHECK THEM OUT! NOT TO BE MISSED!”

The Spotty Dog Books & Ale

The Spotty Dog Books & Ale was once the home of an old firehouse, dating back to 1889. Nowadays, you can go shopping for books and enjoy a pint at the bar .

While the shop doesnt look that big from the outside of it, youll find over 10,000 books at Spotty Dog Books & Ale. Theres also lots of cute merchandise, especially things related to book lovers and cat lovers. I went shopping at Spotty Dog and loved their selection and variety of books and wares. On the beer side of things, they serve mostly local craft beer from the northeast.

Walkway Over The Hudson

The Walkway Over the Hudson is the worlds longest elevated pedestrian bridge coming in at 1.28 miles across the Hudson River. What was once a railroad bridge, it is now a free and easy walk from the cities of Highland on the west or Poughkeepsie on the east.

As you stroll 212 feet above the glittering river, you get a clear view of the expansive body of water stretching south to north, as well as a nice shot of Hyde Park, including the Culinary Institute of America campus.

You can access the walking bridge from either side of the river. If you walk from the Highland side, there is a local ice cream shop, Frozen Caboose Ice Cream, to satiate you afterwards. On both the Highland and Poughkeepsie side, there are also food trucks during the warm weather months.

If you plan on getting on the train, you can easily walk to the Poughkeepsie train station from here. Along the walk, there are placards explaining some of the history of the bridge as a railroad.

  • Check the individual websites to confirm the operating hours of the businesses you plan to visit.

New York State Capitol Is A Must

“I can’t rave enough about this building, the architecture, or our tour guide, John! He was so nice and congenial and knowledgeable. You could tell he wanted us all to be interested and to have a good time! Some fun facts: the New York State Capitol cost twice what it cost to build the US Capitol. It was so costly and such a king project, when Teddy Roosevelt became governor, he stopped the project dead in its tracks, declaring it “finished.” This was so abrupt that you can see where some of the stone mason work was never completed. Also, the senate chamber is literally wallpapered in 23 karat gold. The tour is free and about an hour, and I highly recommend it, as it’s the only way you can see the senate chambers and the governors ceremonial office. The building itself is open 7AM-7PM. There are three grand, picturesque staircases. Grand masonry work everywhere, with surprises around every corner. Art work on ceilings, a hall of governors with artifacts belonging to them.I went on a Friday when neither the senate or assembly were in session, which is how I wanted it, because the building was essentially deserted. You could go on a busier day when they are in session if you’d like to see the assembly debate and vote .Parking at the Empire plaza visitor parking is 10 dollars . Lots of restaurants nearby. I loved this place and loved the tour, and kudos to John!”
