The Look Homeward Angel Statue At Oakdale Cemetary

Acclaimed American novelist Thomas Wolfe was born in Asheville and wrote Look Homeward, Angel in 1929. The book is believed to be largely autobiographical and depicts the life of a family in the deep south in a town that closely resembles communities throughout Western North Carolina. In the novel, there is reference to an Italian marble angel statue and it is widely documented that the authors father, W.O. Wolfe, a gravestone salesman, sold a similar statue to the Johnson family to mark their familys grave plot in the Oakdale Cemetery. The Oakdale Cemetery is located just off Highway 64 W near downtown Hendersonville NC. The beautiful statue displays an angel holding a lily in her left hand and extending her right hand upwards toward the sky. The historic statue is protected by a wrought iron fence and it is a place that many literary enthusiasts like to photograph and visit. Visitors can call 828.693.9708 for more information.

Meet Cool Animals At Team Ecco Aquarium & Shark Lab
You dont expect to see an aquarium in the heart of a mountain town. But we found visiting the Team ECCO Aquarium & Shark Lab to be one of the most fun things to do in Downtown Hendersonville.
The attraction is the passion project of former teacher Brenda J. Ramer, who started the marine science non-profit in her kitchen in 2001. It began with a simple idea: Experience is the best teacher, and a positive learning experience can change a life.
Today, the first inland North Carolina aquarium is home to nearly 300 fish, invertebrates, reptiles, and salamanders. Many of their residents were former pet rescues, including an African Spurred Tortoise, Leopard Gecko, Barracuda, and weird animals such as the Guitar Fish and Axolotl.
Ramer, who has a Masters in Education, uses nearly 25 exhibits to teach school groups about marine life and the importance of conservation.
She also works with high school and college interns, teaching them vital skills in marine science, animal husbandry, and ecosystem management.
Its an inspiring place, to be sure. But watching an intern feeding engaging Geckos, or one of Ramers dogs trying to entice one of the largest Tortoises in the world to play, is also a whole lot of fun!

Marvel At Looking Glass Falls
Though the area suffered some damage from severe storms in August 2021, Looking Glass Falls remains one of the most popular waterfalls in Western North Carolina.
This is partly due to its sheer beauty and partly due to its accessibility: The waterfall is visible from the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway, and just a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Looking Glass Falls has everything you expect from big waterfalls like Crabtree Falls, including height, water volume, and massive rock faces. The difference is that this roadside waterfall doesnt require any hiking at all!
Thats the upside. The downside is that the waterfall can get extremely crowded on weekends and during peak leaf-peeping season. So if you want to visit during that time, our advice is to go early.
Regardless, the 60-foot waterfall is truly impressive as it plunges into the creek, and makes a great stop before or after a visit to the Cradle of Forestry or DuPont State Forest.

St John In The Wilderness Church
Listed on the National Historic Register, St. John in the Wilderness church and cemetery are beautiful and tranquil spots to spend a relaxing visit.
Dating back to 1833, the small Episcopal chapel is beautiful. The church is tucked into a shady forest that bursts with color in the spring time as the azaleas bloom.
A self-guided tour map is available inside the chapel which shows were historic grave sites can be found in the cemetery. Some well-known Southern families have been buried in their family plots here, including Christopher Memminger, first secretary of the Confederate treasury members of the families of three signers of the Declaration of Independence and Major General Edward P. King, Jr., of the United States Army.
Open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We love traveling to Gatlinburg, TN. Its a beautiful road trip between here and there. We head northwest, driving along the border of North and South Carolina. We pass so many large towns all the way, so we sometimes pull off to check them out. Like last July when we ended up in Asheville. But that doesnt mean the smaller towns shouldnt be celebrated as well.
One of the small towns we pass is Hendersonville, NC .
If youre driving through on your way to somewhere else, you might want to schedule a pitstop in Hendersonville. Theres a lot more to do there than you would expect.

Hike In Dupont State Recreation Forest
This area gained notoriety when it was used as one of the film locations for the first Hunger Games, but you don’t need to be a fan of the movie to appreciate the setting here. Just 30 minutes southwest of Hendersonville, DuPont State Recreational Forest covers more than 10,000 acres of lakes, rivers, wilderness, and dramatic waterfalls. Hiking trails meander through the tall trees and rhododendrons, and picnic shelters offer places to relax.
One of the more popular hikes, with a high reward-to-effort ratio, is High Falls Loop Trail. This 2.2-mile trail leads past High Falls and Triple Falls, and was used in the filming of the Hunger Games. Short spurs lead to other interesting sites, including a covered bridge above High Falls and access to the river’s edge. The rhododendrons lining the trail bloom in April or May.
