How To Get To Harlem
Harlem is part of Manhattan. While its not its own borough, like some tourists think, Harlem is enormous and broken into several different neighborhoods.
In the simplest terms, Harlem runs roughly from 110th St. to 155th St. It starts a bit lower on the east side and a bit higher on the west side , but overall those are the approximate borders.
Many of the streets have different names in Harlem than further downtown. For example, 8th Ave. is Frederick Douglas Blvd. in Harlem. 7th Ave. is Adam Clayton Powell Blvd. in Harlem. 6th Ave. is called Lenox Ave. or Malcolm X Blvd. in Harlem .
Central Harlem is the core of Harlem and generally runs north from 110th St. to 155th St., between Amsterdam Ave. and Fifth Ave.
South Harlem, which is within Central Harlem, generally refers to the area north of Central Park to 125th St.
Manhattanville runs from 125th St. to 135th St. on the west side, west of Amsterdam.
Hamilton Heights runs from 135th St. to 155th St. on the west side, from Riverside to Edgecombe.
Sugar Hill is an official historic district. It runs from 145th St. to 155th St. and from Amsterdam to Edgecombe, all of which is part of Hamilton Heights.
East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, runs north from 96th Street and east from Fifth Ave. As a Latinx neighborhood rather than a black neighborhood, East Harlem has a different feel from the rest of Harlem.

Take a walk around Hamilton Heights which is a neighborhood in the northern part of Manhattan. The district has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It comprises of town houses constructed with limestone and brownstone from the period between 1886 and 1931. Take in the vintage and beautiful scenery of the Romanesque, Beaux-Arts, and Queen Anne-style architecture employed in the constructions. Most of the houses are three- and four-story brick row houses popping up behind raised stone terraces.

Discover History Around Every Corner
The elegant Teresa Hotel was granted landmark status by the city of New York in 1993. Built in 1914, it did not segregate until 1940. Until then, many of black Americas most notable performers Josephine Baker, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix, Louis Armstrong, Dorothy Dandridge, Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Lena Horne, Count Basie could not lodge there.
In 1960 President Kennedy stopped at the Teresa on a presidential tour. Fidel Castro once rented 80 rooms at the hotel and was visited by Khrushchev, Nehru and Malcolm X. In 1970 it was converted into an office building. Though you can only visit this building from the outside, its still one of the best things to do in Harlem.

Visit The Hamilton Grange The Home Of Alexander Hamilton
Well get a little place in Harlem and well figure it out.That line from Hamilton wasnt a lie Alexander Hamilton and his wife Eliza built a house in what is now Harlem back when the whole region was countryside. It was quiet uptown.
The house was moved twice within Harlem before getting to its permanent location in St. Nicholas Park. Hamilton, though famed, wasnt the cultural figure that he is today post-musical, and many of the rooms were decorated as best historians could guess. The ground floor is a historic center telling the story of Hamiltons life. A movie about his life and legacy plays as well.
The Hamilton Grange is located at 141st St. between Convent Ave. and St. Nicholas Ave. Its free to visit the Hamilton Grange. Guided tours, the only way to go upstairs, are at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 2:00 PM.
Cultural Crossroads At Lincoln Center
Bringing together a range of socially engaged artists, Lincoln Centers first-ever poet in residence, Mahogany L. Browne, plans to host free, monthly virtual and in-person events as part of her three-month residency, We Are the Work. Her first, which is on Saturday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will feature slam poets and musicians performing next to artworks on digital billboards lining 65th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, and in front of Alice Tully Hall.
Many of the works by multidisciplinary artists such as Russell Craig, Rico Frederick and Eboni Hogan serve as inspiration for the evenings performances. In one, the violinist Mylez Gittens will play a piece he wrote for another violinist, Elijah McClain, a young Black man killed by police in a suburb of Denver in 2019. The graphic in the background of that performance is an image of McClain by Michael Boyd of the Supremacy Project.
At 6:30, the festivities will culminate in a poetry reading by Browne and special guests at Hearst Plaza. A standby line to get into the reading will form at the 65th Street entrance to the plaza. Schomburg Center For Research In Black Culture

This unique public library is located in the heart of Harlem and also where we begin our pay-what-you-like Harlem Walking Tour. It is also included in our GPS-enabled tour of Harlem.
The Schomberg opened in 1925 and has become one of the world’s top institutions devoted to the research, preservation, and exhibition of materials focused on African American, African Diaspora, and African experiences.
They have over 10 million objects, artifacts, documents, recordings, art pieces, and more.

Brazils Beats And Bites Come To Nyc
Brasil Summerfest, the largest music and arts fest of its kind, returns this week with its biggest year yet and runs through Aug. 12. Starting off Sunday at the Hester Street Fair are DJs Gaspar Muniz and Greg Caz, as well as choro music by Regional de NY, samba by Manhattan Samba and drumming from Fogo Azul. Food will include traditional fare like churrasco, coxinhas, feijoada and more, plus beer and sparkling wine. Its free for all ages.

The Civil Rights Movement: Harlem Chapter
In the 1960s, Harlem added its own chapter to the Civil Rights Movement. After an unarmed African American teenager named James Powell was killed by a white NYPD officer in 1964, thousands of people flooded the streets in protest. Some of the protests were peaceful, but others turned violent, sparking race riots in Harlem.
Harlems most famous activist was probably Malcolm X, who advocated more radical and extreme forms of protest than Martin Luther King, Jr., and his peaceful contemporaries. He was assassinated in the Audubon Ballroom, which used to stand at Broadway and 165th Street in Morningside Heights, just north of Harlem.
