The International Civil Rights Center & Museum is located in the same location where the famous sit-in routine of the American civil rights movement began.

Ezell Blair, David Richmond, Joseph McNeil, and Franklin McCain also known as the Greensboro Four began this habit in the early 1960s, seated at the lunch counter of Woolworths to protest its segregation.

True to its origin, the International Civil Rights Center & Museum honors, celebrates and educates visitors on Greensboro, North Carolinas role in the early days of the movement.

It provides a sobering look into the reality of life in a segregated nation.

Its one of the more sobering points of interest in the city.

The International Civil Rights Center & Museum knows how to make an impact.

Youll see genuine historical documents concerning the legalization of black votes in the middle of the 1960s right next to robes belonging to Ku Klux Klan members.

Youll learn all about the non-violent protests for basic human rights, and the often violent means that retaliated against its progress.

The lunch-counter exhibit, a rather accurate recreation of the very same where the sit-ins occurred, is one of the most fascinating displays.

What To Pack For Your Trip To Greensboro

When it comes to packing, it depends on the season youre visiting Greensboro.

However, a basic guide is to ensure you have a sturdy travel backpack like this one to hold your belongings each day, a reusable water bottle to keep you hydrated in the summer heat, and of course some walking shoes like these that will keep the blisters away as you explore.

If youre coming in the winter, temperatures can fall quite significantly and you may end up with snow, so dont forget your cutest snow hat, balaclava, and a really warm coat to make sure you can still enjoy yourselves.

Go Classic At The Carolina Theater

Csbrummitt

When it comes to a romantic night out, theres really no beating the traditional night at the theater. This building reflects the esteem in which the theater was held back in the 20s when it first opened.

A night out at the theater is a time-honored past time in Greensboro and regarded as the perfect way to enjoy a night with your significant other. Through numerous setbacks, including a fire in 1981, the beloved icon of that bygone era has survived, continuing to this day to serve as a stage venue.

The old Carolina Theater is the last of its kind in Greensboro, so a visit here is absolutely essential for that traditional theater night feel!

Trace The Greensboro Four At The International Civil Rights Center & Museum

Housed in the very same spot where the so-called Greensboro Four David Richmond, Franklin McCain, Ezell Blair and Joseph McNeil first initiated the routine of sit-ins during the American civil rights movement at the start of the 1960s, this fascinating museum is dedicated to both showcasing the realities of living in a segregated

America and celebrating those who helped to create change across the country. The exhibitions are at once sobering and engaging, containing Ku Klux Klan robes next to bona fide historical documents related to the reforms that legalised black voting in the mid-60s.

In short, its a great stop-off for any travelers interested in American history and civil rights.

Elsewhere has grown to be a popular activity at the top of must-do lists for Greensboro. Its an unusual museum, based on a collection of items from a thrift store that was run for 60 years by a woman named Sylvia Gray.

When Sylvia passed away in 1997, the store was converted into a beautiful space where artists could come to create and experiment with all the objects that Sylvia had left behind in the store. Today, this space is ever-evolving, as artist residencies reinterpret the objects and give them new meaning.
