I have always wanted to cross over from Oregon, to go across the river and visit this museum. The history of Sam Hill was super interesting. The location and building, with the view Sam Hill loved, is very picturesque. I have seen older pieces and art work, in other museums, but if you like history, and stories, and human interest, check this place out.

Scenic Drives And Attractions Around Goldendale

Goldendale New Life Assembly of God Live (May 3, 2020)

First, theres the drive in and out of Goldendale. Head south on Highway 97 after Yakima and Toppenish, and you find youre dipping into the scrub brushcovered lands of the Yakama Nation and driving past the rumbling Status Creek before climbing, briefly, into the pine-decked hills beside the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Soon youre passing the St. John the Forerunner Greek Orthodox Monastery, its stucco dome seemingly out of place in this landscape. Drive past town and the road rolls downhill where towering wind turbines dot the landscape in some spectacular, sci-fi sort of way, toward the sparkling Columbia River Gorge.

But slip into Goldendale, with its Mount Adams backdrop, and youll find something unique. The city itself is home to the annual summer bluegrass festival Fiddlin Under the Stars and falls Klickitat County Fair and Rodeo, as well as a long strip of Main Street with a drugstore and handful of restaurants. Then, a few miles out of town, theres one of the largest telescopes in the country. The Goldendale Observatory State Park is where you can put your eye to Jupiter and four of its moons. Come here starting at 1 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays for a tour of the summer night skies, or from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Friday through Sunday to see the winter night skies.

“We came here to stargaze on a clear night. We actually drove from Puyallup just to be able to enjoy a show when the staff did a presentation. We got so lucky because there was no rain. We saw the Milky Way, a couple of galaxies from their telescope and of course the not so bright North Star . We got a little lecture about nebulas, the other people that came to the show were engage and all participated in the conversations. There were a couple of kiddos too who seemed to enjoy the show. All in all I recommend this place and I will totally do another 4 hr drive just to hear about the constellations and stargaze again.”

See within 1,100 miles of the moon’s surface and Jupiter’s cloud belts when looking through the amazing telescopes available to the public.

Went to the evening show, unfortunately it was a very foggy night and so we were not able to see anything through the telescope. Instead we had a very interesting 2 hour discussion on astronomy. The lecturer really knew his stuff and was good at explaining difficult concepts such as the angle of the earth’s tilt in layman’s terms, his knowledge of the solar system was impressive and he peppered the discussion with many interesting facts about the planets and their moons. The talk was enhanced by great graphics taken off his laptop.. Anyone with an interest in space and astronomy will find this a fascinating visit.
