Visit Boo The Grizzly Bear
While seeing a wild grizzly bear on a hike may not be the experience you desire, there is an opportunity to see one up close at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. His name is Boo and he was rescued as a cub when his mother was hit by a car. He now lives in a massive refuge within Kicking Horse Resort and can be seen for a small fee. Its a great opportunity to see a grizzly bear up close while also learning about bears and other wildlife in the area.
Speaking of Grizzly bears, there are lots of them roaming around the mountains. If you plan on hiking or exploring the wilderness at all, youll want to practice bear safety.

Visit Yoho National Park
Perhaps the most photogenic place on this list is Yoho National Park and especially the famed Emerald Lake that is a photographers dream.
Would you believe that Yoho is often overlooked by tourists who instead go straight for the busier national parks such as Banff? Dare I say that the winter scenery at Emerald Lake certainly rivals the super-famous Lake Louise.
In the National Park itself, theres backcountry skiing, snowshoe trails, and lake ice skating. One of my favorite things to do here is the Emerald Lake Loop trail which is just 5.3 km . Its incredibly scenic and relatively easy especially if the lake is frozen and you can walk right across it!
If you really want to enjoy the park stay at the Emerald Lake Lodge. It might just be the most beautiful location of any hotel in Canada!
Yoho National Park is located around 40 minutes from Golden and youll need a Canada Parks Pass to stop and explore.

More Of What To Do In Golden Bc
Walk across the Kicking Horse River Pedestrian Bridge, the longest covered pedestrian bridge in Canada.
Visit Edelweiss Village, built in the early 1900s by CP Rail for the Swiss Mountain Guides and their families. There are six quite adorable little chalets with a killer mountain backdrop to admire. Though note that their design was not particularly Swiss in their architecture.
Check out the Museum of Golden and learn about the history of the CPR , how the Kicking Horse River got its name, and the importance of the Swiss Guides and their families.
The Swiss Guides were responsible for shaping the safety and culture of mountain guiding, hiking and heli skiing in the region and in much of the Canadian Rocky Mountains in the early 20th century. Many peaks in the Rockies are named in honor of the Guides and climbers, who used to climb in suit jackets, hats and ties.
Pack a picnic or stop to appreciate the view at Reflection Lake, where the nearby mountain ranges are beautifully reflected in the calm water of the lake,

Walk The Rotary Loop Beside The Kicking Horse River In Golden

After lunch we hopped onto the Rotary Trail from the back door of the bookstore. After crossing the Kicking Horse River on the aptly named Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge, we hung a right and made our way down to Confluence Park where the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers meet.
What was most noticeable was the amount of ice on the Kicking Horse River. There was so much that they had to dredge a channel, removing ice, so water could flow. Note how high the ice is in relation to the pedestrian bridge. I hope this doesnt spell trouble come spring.
This is an easy out and back walk. To get to Confluence Park you do have to walk on a short stretch of road.

Hiking Near Eagles Nest
Since Mountain Biking wasnât my speed, I instead road the gondola up to the top of Kicking Horse Mountain and did some ridge hikes. The views were mind blowing â so many peaks surrounding you and you could see 5 national parks from the top.
After the hike I made my way to the Eagles Nest â the highest restaurant in Golden at 4,000 ft. Eagles Nest is a beautiful restaurant and bar that serves up exquisite food and a famous Caesar cocktail . In fact â this was the best view in a bar that Iâve ever seen. If you want more hiking then try out Yoho National Park nearby for great trails too.

Visit The Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center
The most unique activity I did in Golden was visiting the wolves at the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center, a short drive from town.
The center is privately owned and was set up to educate and change public opinion of wolves. They are also advocating against wild poisons used in Canada that kill wolves.
Theres a 25-minute tour which includes an interpretive talk about the wolves here and their daily lives. You will have the chance to take photos of the wolves so be sure to bring your camera! There are also lots of information boards to read and learn about the wolves and Canadian wilderness.
If you want a more memorable experience you can actually walk with the wolves On this bucket-list-worthy activity, you will join the wolf pack on a hike through the Rockies. This is a unique opportunity to see the wolves in their natural habitat.
The Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Center is located at 1745 Short Road. Tickets cost $12 CAD for adults, $9 for youths, $6 for children, and $35 for a family of 4.
