Middle Clear Creek is one of the greatest beginner rafting runs in the nation. With numerous rapids and historical significance, it is hard to deny the value. Although Clear Creek holds more rapids than most any other run in the US, the rapids of our Middle section are straight-forward and perfect for families with children or anyone else looking for something a bit easier. Rafters will also catch glimpses of Colorado’s rich gold mining history and maybe even a miner or two as they splash down this unique stretch of whitewater.

And Equally Good Sips

One of the most popular spots for an ice cold craft beer is the Guanella Pass Brewing Company, the first of its kind in this old mining town. Have a post-ski-day pale ale, a frothy after-dinner stout, or just something refreshing to wet your whistle any time of day. Mothers Saloon is also a local favorite and has been for a whilea good place to grab a drink and some pub grub with creekside views, too. Sweet Easy is the local lounge spot to relax, sip a handcrafted cocktail , and enjoy the company of friends. A self-titled before or after dinner spot, there are also light food offerings by way of pies, charcuterie, cookies, and truffle popcorn. Its Steeped In History And Vintage Appeal
Tours of the Hamill House give visitors a feel for how Georgetowns early residents lived. Photo Courtesy: georgetown-colorado.org
There are several Victorian-era locations in Georgetown that have been wonderfully preserved and are open for tours to give visitors a feel for the towns origins. Alpine Hose No. 2 is partly to thank for the many surviving vintage structures in Georgetown because, unlike many other mining towns, it never experienced a massive fire. This landmark building has been converted into a local firefighting history museum. The Capital Prize Gold Mine is still a working mine, where youll descend more than 1,000 feet to see and feel what it was like to be a gold miner over 100 years ago. The Hamill House originally constructed in 1867 and expanded into a lavish home by 1879 boasts original details like a marble fireplace, gas lighting and walnut woodwork, giving visitors a glimpse into what life was like during the towns boom era.
Georgetowns Hydroelectric Plant has been powering the city since 1900, and also houses the Georgetown Energy Museum, which covers the history of hydroelectric power locally and elsewhere. Silver Queen Tours offers different walking tours that take you to see some of the most haunted buildings in Georgetown, or to experience the town via newspaper headlines from the 1800s, including its ties to Old West luminaries like Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane.

Colorado History Georgetown Colorado
As an important mining town in the 1800s, Georgetown is brimming with Colorado history. It can be seen in the charming architecture and felt at one of the nations best-kept museums, Hotel de Paris.
Once an operating hotel, it was the brainchild of Louis Depuy, who built Hotel de Paris in 1887. What makes this museum so special is that so much of the furnishings are original to the hotel, and more is being discovered all the time. A pair of Hotel de Paris circa 1920 waitress caps were recently returned to the museum and are currently on display in the opulent dining room.
A tour of the Hotel de Paris is a good way to immerse oneself in Georgetowns past, as is a mine tour. The mountains around Georgetown were packed with gold and silver in the 1800s, and people came from far and wide to work in numerous mines around the area.
Today, for a longer tour that includes a ride on the famous Georgetown Loop Railroad, visitors can explore the Lebanon Mine. Now owned by History Colorado, visitors are guided 1000 feet into this silver mine whilst being regaled with stories of what it was like for superstitious miners in the 1800s.
A bit less time consuming, Capital Prize Gold Mines main tunnel is just a little uphill from downtown. A tour at this working gold mine offers visitors a glimpse of mining through the years. Visitors will learn a lot on this hands-on outing, plus, they get to swing a pickaxe and push an ore cart.
Go For A Walk Fish Or Look For Sheep At Georgetown Lake
Before or after hitting up Cabin Creek, I recommend a walk around beautiful Georgetown Lake. The path that loops the lake is relatively flat, although there is a brief opportunity to get higher up into the mountains for those seeking an elevation gain. Its perfect for a casual morning or early evening walk.
Youll notice as you stroll around Georgetown Lake that tons of people are fishing. In the winter, locals told us, the lake freezes over and is a popular ice fishing spot.
Theres also an area where you can scan the mountainside for bighorn sheep. While we never saw any when we were trying, we learned they do, in fact, exist. When we were pulling out of Georgetown on our last day, they appeared by the on ramp!

Reasons Why Georgetown Is A Hidden Colorado Treasure
Georgetown is a picturesque time-capsule-of-a-town thats cozily nestled into the mountains just 45 miles west of Denver on Interstate 70. More than 200 Victorian-era structures still stand here making it one of the best-preserved 19th-century boom towns in the American West. These buildings from Georgetowns heyday have been lovingly maintained over the years, creating a magical postcard-like atmosphere that makes the town a great retreat from todays 24/7 plugged-in lifestyle.
Founded in 1859 during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush, Georgetown actually began to thrive as a center of residence and commerce for prospectors and miners following the 1864 discovery of silver in the area. Although its a small town today, it boasted a population 10 times its current size in the late 1800s, earning it the nickname the Silver Queen of Colorado. Today, there are many attractions in all seasons that will allow visitors to enjoy the local history and natural beauty of the area.
The Waters Support Recreation In All Seasons
Teeming with brown, rainbow and brook trout, Georgetown Lake is a great place for ice fishing in the winter. Photo Courtesy: georgetown-colorado.org
Clear Creek travels along I-70 through Georgetown, inviting mountain anglers to enjoy its easily accessible population of brown, rainbow and brook trout. True to its name, its quite clear, and for the most part it is fishable year-round with plentiful populations.
Since Clear Creek River flows into Georgetown Lake, its a trout fishermans dream for all the same reasons, but you may also be able to catch some lake trout. You can bring a boat or raft, but no motors are allowed. Once the water freezes over in the winter months, the lake becomes the perfect place for ice fishing. Another event that heats up when the lake freezes over in January and February, are the ice races that the Our Gang 4 Wheelers club has been holding since 1976. All you need to join them is a 4WD or AWD vehicle, a drivers license and a small registration fee. And if youd rather just watch this unique and exciting event, spectators are always free.

So Many Ways To Get Closer To Nature
A variety of hiking trails of varying difficulty levels allow you to enjoy Georgetowns beautiful natural surroundings. Photo Credit: Zach Dischner
Hiking is a great way to connect with your natural surroundings, and a variety of excellent trails can be accessed from Georgetown. Tom Bennhoff Lake Trail is a wide, mostly flat gravel walking path that does an easy 2-mile loop around Georgetown Lake. Trails considered moderate include the 3-and-a-half-mile Griffin Memorial Trail, the 8-mile Hells Hole Hike, and the 2-mile Rutherford Trail which provides an excellent hiking route from Georgetown up to Silver Dale. Other moderately rated trails can be accessed via Guanella Pass, such as Lake Naylor Trail and Silver Dollar Lake Trail.
Clear Creek River is open for rafting from mid-May through mid-August. With an aggressive grade, its the steepest rafting river in Colorado, and offers trips for every level: beginners, intermediate rafters and thrill seekers.
There are several areas near Georgetown to enjoy off-roading. Argentine Pass is a relatively easy 9-mile road that reaches a high point where alpine meadows fill with wildflowers in spring and summer. Kingston Peak is a 7-mile intermediate route that climbs past tree line and provides amazing views. For more experienced drivers there are difficult routes, like the 6-mile path that leads up to Bill Moore Lake.
Things To Do In Georgetown Co
A pretty village of Victorian-era houses and stores, Georgetown, 45 miles west of Denver on I-70 at an elevation of 8,500 feet, is named for an 1860 gold camp. Among the best preserved of the foothill mining towns, Georgetown is one of the few that didnt suffer a major fire during its formative years. Perhaps to acknowledge their blessings, townspeople built eye-catching steeples on top of their firehouses, not their churches.
For information on attractions and travel services, drop by or contact the Georgetown Visitors Center, 613 6th St. , Georgetown, CO 80444 or Historic Georgetown, Inc., 305 Argentine St., P.O. Box 667, Georgetown, CO 80444 . The latter offers guided walking tours of town for about $10 per person.

Hit Up The Local Outdoor Breweries
Normally, Im not a craft beer drinker. But when in Colorado, right? To recover post-hike, there are two breweries located right in Georgetown. Both are dog-friendly, offer outdoor seating and require staff and patrons to wear masks when not seated at their tables. They also both offer beer and food to-go, for those who prefer takeout.
Guanella Pass Brewery is located not surprisingly right near the start of the pass in downtown Georgetown. The place bills itself as the first brewery in Georgetown since Prohibition and serves Detroit-style pizza in addition to beer.
Cabin Creek Brewing is at the opposite end of Georgetown in a truly picturesque setting right by Georgetown Lake. Cabin Creek has a full menu of pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and salads. We loved how far away the outside tables were from each other. In addition to better enabling social distancing, it meant our friends dog who doesnt love other dogs could sit with us safely. Cabin Creek also offers menus via a QR code for sanitized ordering.
Explore Guanella Pass By Car & Foot
Guanella Pass is a scenic byway that starts at the edge of Georgetown. Its filled with breathtaking views, especially in the fall, when Colorados aspens turn their leaves. .
Popular among hikers, campers, and leaf peepers alike, 22-mile Guanella Pass offers a great mix of trails and alpine lakes that allow fishing. If youre planning a weekend in Georgetown, you must plan a morning or afternoon to explore.
The Silverdale Heritage Trail, just a few minutes into the drive, also provides a slice of the areas mining history.
If youve already had some time to adapt to the elevation, you could hike Mt. Bierstadt. Bierstadt is one of Colorados famous 14ers, or peaks over 14,000 feet. This isnt recommended if youre only in Colorado for the weekend, since youll likely feel like crap for around 24 hours after.
Otherwise, there are plenty of shorter, lower elevation hikes that can be done in the morning or early afternoon.
