Alabama Vacation: Fort Gaines

Fort Gaines stands on Dauphin Island and offers great vistas and panoramic views for visitors to marvel at. For more than 150 years, the remarkably preserved ramparts of the fort have guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay, but due to continuous shoreline erosion, the fort itself has been designated one of the countrys eleven most endangered historic sites.

Today, the fort still has a blacksmiths shop, its original cannons and kitchens, a gift shop, museum, and tunnels. Guided tours are offered by staff wearing period dress a touch that truly brings history to life. Visitors can witness blacksmithing and a cannon firing demonstration. The fort was a key site in the Battle of Mobile Bay and it is indeed here that Admiral Farragut made his famous pronouncement: Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!

Alabama Attractions: First White House Of The Confederacy

Have an Amazing Weekend in Florence, AL

While they created a new nation, the Confederates essentially duplicated the old Unions institutions, such as the White House. They established a navy, an army, and a post office all the necessary departments for a functioning government and so reasoned that they should provide their new Chief Executive, Jefferson Davis, with a residence.

Thus, the Provisional Congress authorized the leasing of a so-called Executive Mansion on February 21, 1861. The house had been built between 1832 and 1835. The architect is unknown, but the builder was A. M. Bradley, an established contractor. Successive owners were all prominent citizens of Montgomery. Next read: Best Things to Do in Montgomery

F Scott And Zelda Fitzgerald Museum

5 Things To Do in Florence, Alabama

The F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum is situated in Montgomery, and as the sole museum exclusive to its subject, is one of the top points of interest for renowned author F. Scott Fitzgerald in the world.

The Fitzgeralds came to live in the house in 1931, at the same time that the writer was working on screenwriting Red-Headed Woman and authoring the novel Tender Is The Night.

Only a year later, a mental breakdown would see his wife, Zelda, admitted to a clinic in Baltimore.

That April, Fitzgerald would vacate the home with his child.

The house was set up to be knocked down in 1986, but two people rallied to save it: Julian and Leslie McPhillips.

They also set up the Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum Association and the house was officially opened as a museum the following year.

It is now the last house ever lived in by either Fitzgerald or his wife that remains standing now in Montgomery.

The house itself is interesting to explore.

Its foyer leads to a number of different directions, with the museum being situated on the first floor and apartments located above.

The apartments are now actually used as the Zelda and Scott Suites, which are an AirBnB location.

If you book a room for the night, museum entry is complimentary, so it could be among the free things to do if you decide to stay here!

A tour of the museum starts with a video that dates back to the 1980s.

It is 30 minutes long and tells the tale of the Fitzgeralds and their home.
