Things To Know Before You Visit Culebra
- Supermarkets Culebra has 2 main supermarkets: Costa del Sol and Milka. The first one is close to the airport, while the latter is in town near the bridge. Milka has better selection of products, but is a bit pricier than Costa del Sol.
- Currency used in Culebra is American dollar.
- Bank there is one bank on the island, Banco Popular and this is the only ATM to withdraw cash.
- a lot of places take credit cards VISA, Mastercard and Discover. However, some small restaurants and food stands are cash only.
- Sunscreen bring and uselots of sunscreen, more than you think you should. The sun is really strong, and a lot of the beaches offer very little shade.
- Bringwater shoes beaches like Tamarindo and Carlos Rosario have some rocky spots.
- Language even though the official language is Spanish, most people speak English as well, especially in hotels, restaurants or tour operators.

Safety and Health
Mosquitos can carry Dengue as well as Zika in Puerto Rico so make sure you bring adequate bug repellent.
We used Sawyer Products Premium Insect Repellent while we were there and it worked great. We did not get any mosquito bites and had a good user experience. They carry both spray and lotion versions.
Other Tips for Visiting Culebra Island
Bring some toilet paper because most of the restrooms we visited did not have any. We love the compact rolls that easily fit in a backpack or purse.
You can expect power outages on the island. While we were eating dinner, the power went out. The restaurant continued running as normal.
There is only one ATM on the Culebra, Puerto Rico so bring some cash with you. Some places only accept cash. Some of the grocers and shops do accept Visa and MasterCard.

Where To Stay In Culebra
The accommodations in Culebra are simple and choices are limited to small hotels, rented villas and Airbnb. Dont look for big hotels or resorts, because you wont find them on this island.
Club Seabourne a boutique resort in the hillsides of Culebra, a perfect place if you want to be a bit removed. Its a few minutes away from town, so having either a Jeep or a golf cart is a must.
Mamacitas Guest House this is a simple guest house right in town with a restaurant and a bar downstairs, right on the canal. A short walk from the ferry terminal, restaurants and Milka supermarket.
Palmetto Guesthouse a small 6 room guest house in a central location. Close to Costa del Sol supermarket and the airport, yet removed enough, so its quiet.
Villa Flamenco Beach this 6 apartment villa gives you a very rare opportunity to stay right on Flamenco Beach. There really are only a couple of places right on it, so this is a very special place. Because of it and the amazing hospitality, Villa Flamenco Beach has a lot of repeat visitors, so make sure to inquire early!

Where To Eat In Culebra
Unfortunately, many of the restaurants we wanted to visit were not open during our stay in Culebra in October of 2020.
We recommend that you bring your favorite snacks or food staples if you have a specific diet. There are a few grocery stores and small markets in town where you can find the essentials for cooking if youre staying in a place with a kitchen.
Swim With Sea Turtles At Tamarindo Beach
The second most popular beach on Culebra is Tamarindo beach. Why you ask? Well, because of its sea turtle population.
Located about a 10 minute jeep-ride away from the Culebra Ferry Terminal and 6 minute jeep-ride away from Flamenco Beach, Tamarindo beach is snorkeling paradise.
A part of Cayo Luis Peña Nature Reserve, Tamarindo Beach is no where near as developed as Flamenco Beach but thats also part of its charm.
Youll find no rental or food kiosks here. Meaning, whatever you need for your day here, you must bring those items with you. But, the natural beauty of the spot makes it worth it.
NOTE: Tamarindo beach is a safe haven for sea turtles so PLEASE do not touch them or feed them and please pick up your trash.

The first step in getting to Flamenco Beach is getting to the island of Culebra, which is 17 miles off the east coast of Puerto Rico.
You can get to Culebra on a small plane or ferry. We opted for the ferry since it was WAY cheaper and more flexible.
The ferry ride is 45 minutes each way and only costs $2.25 for adults and $1 for kids.
If you are interested in flying to Culebra, here are some details:
- Flights depart daily from San Juan and Ceiba .
- Flights from Ceiba are $45 each way on Air Flamenco.
- Flights from San Juan are $89 each way on Cape Air.

Culebra Snorkeling Day Trip
The main focus of this guide is to showcase the best of Culebra for those who choose to spend a few days on the island. How To Get To Flamenco Beach: Ceiba Ferry Terminal
There is a cute little cafe inside the ferry building if you need to grab a snack. There are restrooms as well.
To get into the waiting area for the ferry you will have your tickets scanned on your phone .
The waiting area was great covered to protect you from the sun and kept cool by giant fans.
There was a man selling shaved ice in the waiting area so we got some while we waited.
They started to board the ferry about 20 minutes before departure.

Eat Your Way Through The Pork Highway
Known officially as the Ruta de Lechon the Pok Highway in Puerto Rico is where youll find some of the best meaty delights. The Pork Highway is a three mile stretch of road in the area of Guavate. The region is generally pretty quiet and sleepy but if youre looking for amazing local food, this is the place. Like the name suggests, every restaurant here specializes in pork with a very central emphasis on the lechón. Lechón is a whole pig, spit roasted, covered in juices, and Puerto Rican spices that slow roasts for hours on end, rotating in its own juices. But the Pork Highway has a lot more to it than just lechón. Blood sausage, various stews, and sandwiches are also found here and because the place attracts various degrees of people, you can also expect a pretty jovial and festive atmosphere. Its basically a big, long block party.

Grab Some Fresh Produce At The Atarazanas Market
The Atarazanas market, also known as the Central Market, is a vibrant and bustling hub of activity. Formerly a 14th-century Moorish shipyard, these days it acts as a beacon for locals and tourists alike its rows brim with everything from local produce to clothing and souvenirs. Its a great place to do some shopping or just people-watch!
The market is typically open Monday to Saturday, from 8 am to around 3 pm, so theres plenty of time to pop by however, why not opt for a real local experience and join a guided tour instead?
Transportation On Culebra Island
If you are just looking to see Flamenco Beach, there are shuttles that will take you from the ferry terminal to the beach. The shuttle prices are about $5.00 per person, per way. Depending on how many people you have and how you want to spend your time on the island, this is a simple option.
We rented a jeep for about $45 from Carlos Jeep Rental. In addition to car rentals, they have golf carts available. The golf cart rental costs less money but if you have a car seat aged child, you are not able to rent the golf carts. It is nice to have air conditioning in the jeep.
There is a shuttle that will take you from the ferry terminal to Carlos Jeep Rental. It isnt a bad walk either if you want to have some time to spend wandering the streets of Culebra, Puerto Rico.
Public transportation does not really exist on the island. Taxis operate throughout the island and charge $3-5 depending on the length of the ride.
