Boxwood Hall Elizabeth New Jersey

Boxwood Hall is a famous historic site and one of the most treasured landmarks in the city of Elizabeth, New Jersey. Constructed around the year 1750, the house was once the home of Elias Boudinot, who served as president of the U.S. Continental Congress during the American Revolution. He was also one of the signers of the treaty that ratified the independence of America from Great Britain. Boxwood Hall was also visited by George Washington and Alexander Hamilton. The house today is open to the public from 10:00am to noon and 1:00pm to 5:00pm, Wednesday through Sunday.

Boxwood Hall State Historic Site

Another important historical site located in Elizabeth is Boxwood Hall. This charming red colonial style house was once known as home to Johnathan Dayton, the youngest person to sign the Constitution. Boxwood Hall also served as accommodations for important travelers such as George Washington and General Lafayette.

Open Monday to Friday, this home can be toured for a feel of colonial style life in New Jersey. Much of the house still has the original hardwood and paneling for the walls. Since this site can be toured for free, it is a great budget-friendly option.

North End / North Elizabeth

The North End, also known as “North Elizabeth”, is a diverse working-class neighborhood. The borders are approximately the Arch north to the city line between North Broad Street and US 1& 9. It was developed mostly in the 1920s for workers in the Duesenberg automobile plant . The area was heavily settled by the Irish and then Portuguese. The North End has easy access to New York and Newark via its own NJ Transit train station, Routes 1& 9 and the NJ Turnpike. The neighborhood also has Crane Square, the Historic Nugents Tavern, and Kellogg Park and its proximity to Newark Liberty International Airport. There is currently a plan in place to develop the former Interbake Foods facility into shopping and residential townhouses and condominiums. This community contains many larger one and two-family homes that have been rebuilt over the past decade. North Elizabeth also features many well-kept apartment houses and condominium units on and around North Avenue that are home to professionals who work in New York or the area. The only Benedictine women’s community in New Jersey is located at Saint Walburga Monastery on North Broad Street.
