Things To Do In Downtown Huntsville

Us Space And Rocket Center

Attractions in Huntsville Downtown, ALABAMA (USA) , Fun Trip, Travel vlog.

As the birthplace of Americas Space Programme, Huntsville goes by the nickname of The Rocket City, so the U.S. Space & Rocket Center is one of the Huntsville attractions you wont want to miss. Set on a huge campus on the edge of town, it showcases the space rockets and technologies developed at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville. This is the largest space attraction in the world and I recommend you set aside half a day to visit at a leisurely pace.

Outdoors in the Rocket Park you can see one of the worlds largest collections of rockets close up, including the Space Shuttle, Saturn 1 and Apollo rockets, while Shuttle Park displays the rocket launch vehicles. The cavernous Saturn V hall displays the Apollo 12 lunar module and sections of the enormous Saturn V rocket. Its over 50 years since men first stood on the moon and the original space are on show, as well as the tiny trailer where the astronauts had to quarantine once they returned to earth from outer space.

Fun Things To Do In Huntsville Alabama

The easy going city of Huntsville in Northern Alabama makes a great starting point for a road trip through the Deep South of the USA. Known as The Rocket City theres a contrast between high tech connections to the US Space Programme and the low rise Downtown area, that gives the city a small-town feel. Among the fun things to do in Huntsville Al, is the US Space and Rocket Center, with the world class Huntsville Botanical Garden, art galleries and heritage attractions to enjoy, not to mention a vibrant and varied food scene.

The weather in Huntsville becomes hot and humid in summer, causing a retreat to the air conditioning, so Id recommend a visit in the spring or autumn, for warm and sunny sightseeing weather. Huntsville is also an easy city to get around on foot or by bike, although youll get the most from your stay if you have a car.

Note that the Piper & Leaf Artisan Tea company is on the coffee trail with a great new outlet at Alabama Constitutional Village. I thought their range of tea was exceptional.

Appreciate The Street Art & Other Public Art

If your prefer your art outdoors rather than indoors, Huntsville still has you covered. The city is filled with public art, and new public art works regular pop up in the downtown area. Some pieces are permanent and others are temporary.

One of the largest public art projects in Huntsville has been the SPACES Sculpture Trail which runs through the city and features over 35 sculptures by over 20 artists from across the United States. The city regularly organizes guided local walks of the trail, but you can easily see the sculptures on your own.

If you enjoy street art, there are some fantastic street art murals around the city. Some are designed to encourage you to get involved in the piece, perhaps by holding an errant bunch of balloons or being eaten by a giant carp. A couple of good spots to find street art in Huntsville are the Clinton Row Color Walk and the murals around Big Spring Park.

Of course, youll likely spot art all over Huntsville if you keep your eyes peeled. Some other examples include the famous Cosmic Christ mosaic on the side of the First Baptist Church, the painted mural on the side of the Liquor Express building, the murals on the exterior of the Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment buildings, and the mosaic mural inside the Madison County Courthouse.
