Where Should I Stay In North Devon
There are so many options of places to stay in North Devon. Id recommend choosing self-catering accommodation. You can save lots of money by going to a supermarket and cooking some of your own meals. Also, youll have more space than in a hotel room. This can be particularly useful when youve got lots of wet, sandy things from the beach! There are loads of cottages, and some will have a beautiful sea view. Or for a cheaper option, some holiday parks will have lodges and static caravans for your stay. If youre feeling brave you could even try camping!
Be A Beekeeper For A Day On Quince Honey Farm
60,000 bees, a big orange suit and lots of honey makes for a fun day out! One of the best things to do in Devon is to take a guided tour of the hives.
Tours at Quince Honey Farm are currently unavailable due to Covid-19, but Im absolutely buzzing to give it a go once theyre back on! See more information on the website here.
Day Trip To Lundy Island Off The Devon Coast
Lundy Island is known for its turbulent history and despite being just 3 miles long and 0.5 miles wide, the island in the Bristol Channel is one of the most popular things to do in North Devon and also a popular North Devon day trip or even overnight destination that can be reached by boat from Devons coast.
Between March and October, MS Oldenburg sails to Lundy from either Bideford or Ilfracombe depending on the tides. The trip takes approximately 2 hours and gives visitors the perfect opportunity to spend a day on this unique island.
Return day tickets cost:
While youre on Lundy, you can experience everything the island has to offer with its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities. The island also offers birdwatching, diving, fishing, climbing and plenty of walks.
Check the Lundy Island website here for boat timetables, Lundy island activities and details of where to stay on the island if youre considering staying overnight.

Mayflower Museum Visitors Centre
If you want to learn more about the Mayflower expedition, visit the Mayflower Museum Visitors Centre in Plymouth, located above the visitors centre. This is a must-visit rainy day attraction for history buffs!
Here, youll get to learn all about this expedition which saw dozens of men, women, and children leave Europe for the Americas.
They called it The New World, but one of the things that the exhibition details really well was how it wasnt a new world for the many Indigenous people who lived there, and how they suffered at the hands of European settlers.
The exhibition also discusses why the pilgrims left Europe, how they made a new life in America and the issues that they dealt with when they arrived.
Its only a small museum, but it packs in a considerable amount of information and its well worth visiting, rain or shine! It is open from 9:00am until 5:00pm every day except Sunday, when it is open from 10:00am until 4:00 pm.
Opposite the Visitors Centre, you can find the Mayflower Steps , which is a replica of the steps that the pilgrims travelled down before boarding the boat.

Bodyboarding In The Sea
Another of the top things to do in North Devon is to try bodyboarding in the sea. Experience the thrill as you catch some waves and surf onto the beach. Bodyboarding is so much easier than surfing so its accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness and swimming ability. The sea is cold though, even in the summer, so Id recommend a wetsuit. There are plenty of places to buy or hire a wetsuit so you can spend all day enjoying the waves.
Gara Rock Hotel & Spa
Gara Rock is a sumptuous, luxury clifftop hotel with impeccable style and stunning views. Its just across the estuary from Salcombe in East Portlemouth. Its easy to get the ferry across from Salcombe to East Portelmouth, but the drive takes around 30 mins because you have to go round the headland.
Salcombe Harbour Hotel
This four-star waterfront hotel, Salcombe Harbour Hotel, is in the heart of town and has gorgeous estuary views. Its part of the Harbour Hotels group, which can be relied upon for comfortable luxury.
This stylish three-bedroom apartment, The Bowline, has a gorgeous swimming pool that brings to mind Italy rather than Devon. The pool is shared with three other homes.
Brightham House Boutique B& B
Located in Malborough, just two miles from Salcombe, the bright and fun Brightham House B& B offers a more budget option than the Harbour House and Gara Rock.

The College was originally located on HMS Hinderstan and HMS Britannia both moored on the River Dart but moved into a purpose built college on the hill above when recruits started to become ill in the cramped quarters on the ships. Hike Part Of The South West Coastal Path
First up on the best things to do in Devon is of course the South West Coastal Path. This is the longest National Trail in the UK, starting in Minehead in Somerset, going along the North Devon coast , right the way round the coast of Cornwall, continuing along the South Devon coast and finishing in Poole Harbour, Dorset.
Choose a section for a day hike or make a few days of it and get your backpacks on! So many people have the same idea, youll never be far from company.
Rockpooling On The Beaches
Another activity while on the beach is to look for crabs and fish in the rockpools. You can buy a fishing net and put anything you catch in a bucket of water before releasing them back into the wild.
