If youve got a kiddo whos obsessed with Thomas the Tank Engine, head on out to the Colorado Railroad Museum. If youre spending the day in Golden already, good news: the museum is just down the road from downtown.

It houses over 100 narrow- and standard-gauge steam and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, and cabooses on the 15-acre property. Be careful and keep an eye on the clock or else youll lose track of time.

Visit Mount Evans Scenic Byway

Visitors looking for things to do around Denver in addition to in the city itself are encouraged to take a drive on the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. This 28-mile road, which can be reached via a 40-minute drive, is a great way for you to fully experience the Rocky Mountains. In fact, it is the country’s highest paved road, gaining more than 7,000 feet in elevation and reaching 14,130 feet at its highest point.

As you are making your way into the mountains, you will come across several lookout points, where you can stretch out your journey and take in increasingly impressive views of the Rockies. Want to know why? Of course you do! It has pretty much everything. Museums like the Childrens Museum and the Museum of Nature and Science will captivate kids of all ages. Animal lovers will be in their element at the Denver Zoo or Downtown Aquarium.

Want thrills more than spills? Elitch Gardens or Lakeside Amusement Park will do the trick! Want spills more than thrills? Head to Water Ways or Waterworld to cool off!

The Cheyenne Mountain Run

Located in historic Denver Fire Station No. 1, families will love the Denver Firefighters Museum. The building was erected in 1909 and served as a working fire station until 1974. Be sure to have the camera ready as they try on equipment, slide down the pole, ride on a fire truck designed specifically for kids and pretend to put out fires. The museum also has a gift shop with toys, apparel, books and more.

History Colorado Center

The History Colorado Center brings history to life with amazing interactive presentations. Traverse a 60-foot map of the state using a “time machine.” Virtually zoom across the plains in a Model T Ford. Great American Beer Festival

DENVER The 40th annual Great American Beer Festival is back in-person after a two-year pandemic hiatus. More than 40,000 beer lovers will descend on the Colorado Convention Center to sample 2,000 beers from 500 breweries. GABF is the nations largest-ticketed beer festival and collection of U.S. beer ever served, in the format of a public tasting event plus a privately judged competition. BRIGHTON The Friends of Barr Lake’s 10th annual Harvest Festival arrives Saturday, Oct. 8. Barr Lake State Park will be home to kid-friendly games, face painting, crafts, wagon rides, petting zoo, live raptor presentation and more. The Friends of Barr Lake will be accepting donations in exchange for snacks, beverages and pumpkins. The Harvest Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A state parks pass or daily park entry fee is required.

Visit Rocky Mountain National Park

One of the features that Denver is most known for is its sitting less than a 30 minute drive from the Rocky Mountains’ Front Range. Meanwhile, Rocky Mountain National Park, a 265,000-acre area that is dedicated to preserving much of this beautiful place, is 90 minutes from downtown Denver. It was designated as a national park in 1915, and millions of visitors take in its beauty on an annual basis.

The Continental Divide runs through the middle of it, resulting in a more forested half, which is closer to Denver, and a drier and glaciated half on the other side. Its highest point is Longs Peak, which reaches 14,259 into the sky. Many visiting the park enjoy driving on Trail Ridge Road, which reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet. The easiest way to visit the park would be taking a guided tour from Denver Downtown.

Take In An Outdoor Concert

Colorado is known for its outdoor music scene. Red Rocks Amphitheater is perhaps the crown jewel of Coloradoâs outdoor amphitheaters. But music abounds throughout the state. You can hear the New York Philharmonic in Vail. Or, take in a real opera at Central City Opera. You might just come across live music in one of the stateâs many mountain towns.

The Denver Downtown Aquarium

The Downtown Aquarium in Denver is a great place for both adults and kids. The aquarium features over 500 unique species of aquatic animals including otters and seahorses.

Plus, kids will love the Under the Sea exhibit that showcases real-life mermaids swimming around with the fish.

Other family-friendly exhibits at the Downtown Aquarium include a shipwreck that can be explored, a coral lagoon and even a sunken temple.

Wings Over The Rockies Air And Space Museum

Located on the grounds of the former Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum is a museum which was opened in 1994 with the aim of preserving the history of Lowry AFB’s operations from 1938 to 1994. The museum is housed in historical 40,000 square feet hangar built in 1939 and features some collections, including the USAFs B-1A Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress Bombers, a room of archives documenting the history of military and general aviation aircraft, and an excellent research library. The museum runs some educational and hands-on learning programs, such as the Wings Aerospace Science Program , Kid Space, and the Air and Space Camp for children of all ages. The Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum is the official state air and space museum, and the site of Colorados Aviation Hall of Fame.

There are so many fun things to do at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science that you will want to schedule more than one visit Im sure.

The exhibits at the Museum change regularly, so every time you visit there will be something new to explore. But if its a more quiet time youre after, then the Planetarium is always there with its amazing big screen shows about planetary wonders.

And the iMax theatre is always showing something spectacular on the huge, big screen.

If the kids are bored of doing nothing and want a little mental stimulation, this is definitely the place to go.

Oh and I bet you didnt know that the Museum has a fun stay at home series that the kids can watch. Its lunch with science educators. They talk about all sorts of fun things like the March Madness where animals are put against each other to see who would win, in their normal habitat. Sounds like fun.

For fun and loads of exercise grab the family and your best friends and spend time at Archery Games. It is dodge ball with a different. You are playing with foam tipped arrows instead. Your ultimate aim as a team is to touch or tag all of the members of the opposite team with a shooting arrow to sit them out of the game. The arrows

Each session runs for 75 minutes which includes 15 minutes of training from the staff on how to use the bow and arrows. So, you dont need to have any archery experience. You can imagine the fun and laughter, not to mention, exercise youll have spending an hour here on a rainy or wet day.

Day Trip To Colorado Springs

Located about an hour south of Denver, Colorado Springs makes for a fun family vacation on its own, or as a day trip from Denver. Sitting in the shadow of Pikes Peak, you can drive to the top or take the Cog Rail Way, the highest in the world. Admire the view while humming America the Beautiful. This vantage point inspired Katherine Lee Bates’ words. While you’re in town, visit the Air Force Academy, stop by the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to hand-feed giraffes, or visit the North Pole all year round. Fun fact: NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command is located nearby, and responsible for the annual Santa Tracker…among other things.

Day : Denver Aquarium Children’s Museum & 16 Street Mall

Denver may be landlocked, but it’s still home to more than 500 species of ocean-dwellers, thanks to the Downtown Aquarium, the largest aquarium between Chicago and California. Have close encounters with sharks, sea turtles, stingrays, rainbow fish and sea otters as they swim in more than a million gallons of water. Nearby is the Childrens Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus, an imagination-stimulating journey for newborns through age 8. Kiddos and their grown-ups can race to the top of a 3½-story climber, step inside a 6-foot bubble, sculpt a masterpiece out of clay or zip through the air in Adventure Forest.

The exhibits here will entertain, as well as give an opportunity for exploration and learning. The museum features more than a dozen “playscapes,” including a hands-on fire department, an assembly plant for interactive building activities and a tot-sized veterinary clinic.

Older kids will want to check out a few of the citys urban adventure parks for skateboarding, BMX, mountain biking, skiing/boarding and more right in town. Downtown Denver Skatepark and Curbside Skate Park are a couple to scope out.
