The National Mall & Memorial Parks

For the history buff

Boasting free entrance to monuments, museums, and memorials, and under the care of the National Park Service, the National Mall is home to art, cultural, history, and religious museums including the free-to-enter Smithsonian Institution and more.

Two standouts among the museums are the Holocaust Museum and the newest addition to the Smithsonian Institute, the African American Museum. Some classics are the Air and Space Museum, the National Art Gallery, and the American History Museum.

The National Mall also includes some of the most significant locations in American history. For example, the Lincoln Memorial and Reflecting Pool are images often associated with peaceful protest. This is where American citizens marched on Washington and where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous I Have a Dream speech.

There are also several memorial monuments honoring those who served in various wars, such as Vietnam, Korea, and World War II. Its a must-see when in the D.C. area.

National Museum Of Health And Medicine

National Museum of Health and Medicine

The National Museum of Health and Medicine is run by the U.S. government, but you wouldnt know that by looking at its exhibitions.

Rather than being the dull, drone-like museum of school field trips, its a fun and dynamic place that disguises its lessons so cleverly that your kids will be begging to come back.

Organs are displayed in glass jars.

Hairballs are behind glass cases after being pulled from human stomachs.

Rare and vintage medical tool are everywhere some are replicas, and others are rusted originals.

You can also see one-of-a-kind relics like the bullet that was pulled from Abraham Lincolns skull.

It still has trace amounts of brain matter on it.

If youre seeking Washington DC attractions that offer something a little different than usual, try the National Museum of Health and Medicine.

Its a nice mix of informative and educational, and whether youre traveling with kids, colleagues, dates, spouses or no one at all, you can have a great time here.

1. Have you been to the Hirshhorn lately? The exhibition Laurie Anderson: The Weather, which opened there in late September, is fantastic. The collection of multimedia works includes beautiful abstract paintings, captivating stories, interesting photography, original instruments, spoken word video sculptures, and much more. Most striking of them all is an entire black and white gallery hand painted by Anderson with sketches, quotes, poems, and passages and youll want to examine all of them.

Id recommend the exhibit for tween ages and up, though younger children could definitely tag along there are visual elements that would appeal to them, too.

The exhibit is running through July 2022, and, of course, the rest of the museum is always great to explore, too. The Hirshhorn is currently open Wednesday Sunday, 10am 5:30pm. Admission is free.

2. There are still some appointments available for virtual sessions with renowned silhouette portrait artist Karl Johnson on November 12 & 13. Just in time for the holiday season, the sweet cut outs make for great gifts!
