20 Things to Do in Dallas with A Teenager

The Sixth Floor Museum, dedicated to the assassination of John F. Kennedy, was built in the space from which Lee Harvey Oswald fired at the president. While this might sound somber, the museum attracts lots of families, who come to experience one of the most infamous events in Dallas’ history. The exhibits include photographs of the Kennedy family before and after the assassination, a clip of the event and some personal presidential effects. Memory books allow visitors to leave a comment and share their impression of the place.

Meet The Tigers At The Dallas Zoo

While Dallas World Aquarium focuses more on marine life, if you want to get to know some of the more impressive land-based animals, the Dallas Zoo is your best bet.

Covering a whopping 106 acres with 406 species and thousands of animals all up, the zoo presents as a perfect day-long activity especially if traveling with kids.

Hot tip: make sure to arrive early for your best chance of seeing the animals active and playful, as a lot of the animals will sleep as the day gets hotter.

Surround Yourself With The Cattle Drive Sculptures

At first glance, it might look like nothing more than a few larger-than-life sculptures in front of the Dallas Convention Center.

However, the three cowboys and a 40-large herd of longhorn steer carry a deeper meaning: an homage to an important part of Texan history.

Surprisingly, its currently the second-most popular tourist spot in Dallas!

Oh, and when youre there, make sure to take a short stroll through the cemetery as well.

John F Kennedy Memorial Plaza

The understated John F. Kennedy Memorial Plaza was inaugurated in June 1970, beside the red sandstone towers of the Dallas County Courthouse.

The monument at its core was designed by architect Philip Johnson, a friend of the Kennedy family, and was personally approved by Jacqueline Kennedy.

Conceived to represent the freedom of John F. Kennedys spirit, the memorial comprises a square room without a roof, with concrete walls 15 x 15 meters long and 9 meters high.

These walls are composed of 72 concrete columns, supported by two legs at each corner and so appearing to hover over the ground when illuminated at night.

In the room is a granite square carved with JFKs name, painted in gold to catch the light from the walls.

The oil baron Algur Meadows made repeated trips to Madrid in the 1950s, and in that time he fell in love with Spanish art at the Museo del Prado, resolving to create his own Prado on the prairie back in Dallas.

This became the Meadows Museum at the Southern Methodist University campus, home to one of the largest assemblages of Spanish art outside of Spain.

The art here dates from the 900s to the present, comprising Renaissance altarpieces, massive Baroque canvases, liturgical polychrome images, graphic art, Impressionist landscapes, abstract painting, sketches and sculpture.

Among the many great artists featured are Velázquez, El Greco, Murillo, Ribera, Zurbarán, Goya , Sorolla, Rodin, Picasso, Dalí, Miró, Henry Moore and Giacometti.

George W Bush Presidential Library And Museum

2943 SMU Blvd. on the Southern Methodist University Campus

I love presidential libraries! Before I visited the George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, I had only been to ones that honored presidents who served long before I was born. So visiting this library, with the Sept. 11, 2001, attack at its core, was a fascinating look at the way presidential libraries attempt to tell history from the perspective of the man who was in charge.

The 9/11 Nation under Attack exhibit is incredibly moving. Its centerpiece is the two steel beams set upright to mimic the Twin Towers of New York City. There was hardly a dry eye among the strangers who stood near me remembering that fateful day.

While that portion of the museum is best for tweens and older kids, there are lots of other parts of the museum that are decidedly young-kid-friendlier. You can get a photo taken sitting behind the presidents desk in the replica of the Oval Office. My teens spent a lot of time reliving their childhood by reading aloud their favorite books in the Kids Clubhouse. Those books were chosen by Mrs. Bush, a former librarian.

If you work up an appetite, have lunch at Cafe 43 . Its a lovely setting overlooking the grounds and the food is fabulous.

Ride The Las Colinas Gondola

Looking for something to do in Dallas at night? Well, then we would recommend taking a short excursion to the upscale neighbourhood of Las Colinas. Here youll find a pretty cool canal system the Mandalay Canal, as well as Lake Carolyn that, interestingly enough, you can actually navigate by boat.

Actually, you wont be doing the navigating: a gondolier will be doing that for you. The best way to see the canals, we would say, is in the evening, which is when you can actually opt for a dinner or some drinks whilst your gondolier ferries you around. They may even sing you a song if youre lucky. Fun fact: these were originally planned as legitimate transport between Las Colinas office buildings.

The Fort Worth Stockyards

131 E. Exchange Ave., Fort Worth

Fort Worth is only 45 minutes away from Dallas, if youre lucky and traffic cooperates. The big draw for us the first time we visited was the promise of the Fort Worth Stockyards twice-daily cattle drives. We lined up eagerly with all of the other tourists and waited for a handful of long horn cattle to walk a block down the street.

So, it was a little disappointing, but its still one of the fun things to do in Dallas with kids. Seeing those imposing animals up close was worth the wait, even if the name cattle drive is a little inflated.

We visited on a weekday so we couldnt take advantage of the Herd Experience with The Fort Worth Herd. Available Saturday and Sunday afternoon from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the free program allows adults and kids to interact with the cattle Drovers while they use tools that were used during the Cattle Drive Era. You can watch as they groom and saddle a horse, practice roping and branding, hear chuck wagon stories, and take photos.
