In 1971, restaurateur Mariano Martinez modified a soft-serve ice cream machine to produce perfectly-mixed, cold margaritas that could be poured quickly. The result was the famous frozen margarita.
The original frozen margarita machine is now in the Smithsonians National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C., but you can still have the drinks here. There are five locations of or La Ranch Hacienda around the city that still serve the original recipe plus flavored frozen margaritas and varieties mixed with sangria.
