I was able to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the sprawling two-acre vegetable garden which feeds the 280-seat Farmhouse restaurant this takes farm-to-table to a new level .
I was able to get a sneak peak of the future of Fair Oaks Farms: a 8,600 tree pick-your-own-fruit orchard. But the highlights for the kids are The Dairy Adventure and The Pig Adventure a unique view into the world of a commercial farming operation.

The town of Crown Point was incorporated in 1868. Walking its downtown streets you will see a number of impressive buildings with historic charm. The most notable is the Lake County Courthouse, affectionately known as the Grand Old Lady by locals. Because Crown Point had no waiting period for marriage licenses originally, the Courthouse was also known as the Marriage Mill famous people were married here, including Muhammad Ali, Rudolph Valentino, and Tom Mix.
If you appreciate history and architecture, then you can surely entertain yourself for a day of wandering amongst the Crown Point Courthouse Square Historic District. There are many significant buildings in downtown Crown Point, with the Courthouse, Lake County Sheriffs Office, Lake County Criminal Court, Lake County Jail, and the Neoclassical Bank. All had enough historic or architectural significance to be considered for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Of course, Crown Point offers plenty of other entertainment as well. Downtown provides a variety of interesting shops and attractions. The Lake County Historical Society Museum, open from May to October, will entertain you with its rotating exhibits and artifacts showcasing the history of Lake County.
The Gary Southshore Railcats
Right in the heart of downtown Gary, the local boys of summer take the field as part of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball . The stadium, U.S. Steel Yard, is a very intimate venue and there isnt a bad seat in the house. The Gary SouthShore RailCats were the 2013 league champions and play some fine baseball.
I caught a RailCats game when the Winnipeg Goldeyes came to town. The RailCats struck early on a Goldeyes error, but ended up losing the hard fought 6-5 game. This is serious baseball and it doesnt get any more exciting or authentic! Located at One Stadium Plaza, Gary, IN 46402. Season runs mid-May to early-September .

See The Landmarks Along Erie Lackawanna Trail
The lengthy Erie Lackawanna Trail is an excellent route for those who want to explore the various attractions on this side of Indiana.
Its southern terminus is located in Crown Point, with a little park marking the starting point of the greenway.
From here, the trail runs parallel to the former Erie Lackawanna Railway and covers 17.7 miles.
It ends in the city of Hammond but not before passing many of the areas well-known destinations.
These include the Griffith Historical Park, Ivan Gatlin Nature Preserve, and Indiana Visitors Center.

No, Sauerman Woods Park is in no way related to the famous Lord of the Rings villain played by Christopher Lee.
It is, however, a lovely little attraction thats far from the bleak landscape of Sarumans lair, Isengard.

You need to drive a few minutes from the city center to reach the scenic Lemon Lake County Park.
Its one of the quieter, undeveloped attractions located south of Crown Point.
Because of its pristine and undisturbed woodlands sections, the destination attracts many nature lovers and adventurers from all over.
This vast, 403-acre space contains mostly wilderness, meadows, and two small lakes.

Enjoy community festivals throughout the year. The city is host to a variety of festivals, including the summertime Corn Roast and Food and Arts Festival in June. Crown Point is also home to the Lake County Fair each August. Next up is Oktoberfest, 2 to 10 p.m. Oct. 7 on South Main Street. It will include a Food Truck Festival and a variety of fall activities.
Catch A Festival Or Parade
If you enjoy outdoor social events, Crown Point has you covered. Every year, the Lake County Fairgrounds hosts one of Indianas largest fairs, the Lake County Agricultural Societys Annual County Fair. Nearly endless stalls with fair food, rides, 4H displays, agricultural presentations and carnival rides will welcome you to this family-friendly event.
Weekly, you can catch the local Farmers Market at Bulldog Park in the heart of downtown Crown Point. This outdoor market hosts over 30 vendors with fresh food, preserves and pickles, flowers, and much more. If youre a real foodie, check out the annual Taste of Crown Point, where local eateries offer tastes of their most popular dishes.
