Tour A Coffee Plantation In Costa Rica
Costa Rica produces some of the greatest coffee in the world. Because of the rich soil, constant rainfall, and suitable temperatures, the coffee beans here are of the highest quality. If youre a coffee connoisseur, Costa Rica has plenty of delicious options. You may also take a tour of a plantation to learn more about this unique beverage.
Costa Rica produces all arabica coffee beans, with the majority of production concentrated in the Central Highlands, where the terrain is mountainous and the soil is rich due to volcanic activity. Take in the beautiful environment, learn about the harvesting and roasting procedures, and possibly even select coffee beans yourself.

Teatro Nacional San Jose
This is San Joses most revered building. It was built in 1897 and is known for its neoclassic facade, lavish marble lobby and auditorium that are both filled with paintings depicting 19th Century life. The theatre’s most famous painting is Alegoria al café y el banano, an idyllic canvas showing coffee and banana harvests. Tours of the theatre are conducted hourly on Costa Rica vacations. There are several floors which you can explore. The most impressive room is the lobby where there is a huge painting on the ceiling, delicately carved statues and wonderful chandeliers. There are performances several times a week. The National Symphonic Orchestra includes both Costa Rican and foreign composers.
Activities Near Me: Arethusa Farm
Arethusa Farm is a dairy farm in Bantam, originally opened by the Webster family since 1868 and named after the region’s pink orchard variety of the same name. In 1999, the farm was purchased by Anthony Yurgaitis and George Malkemus, who have maintained a public dairy storefront and gourmet restaurant at the site since 2014. Visitors can stop in at the dairy’s open barn hours on Saturday to meet-and-greet with farm cows and learn about milking and bottling operations. The company’s ultra-pasteurized milk is sold throughout the year, crafted to retain as much of its natural flavor as possible. Handcrafted ice cream is also sold, along with farm-fresh yogurt, European-style cheeses, small-batch butter, and seasonal eggnog made with cage-free eggs. The dairy farm’s restaurant, Arethusa Al Tavolo, has been named as a top 100 restaurant in the United States by OpenTable since its opening.

Get On Your Bike And Ride
Bike Arenal has SO many tours and experiences to offer! And not all of them involve bikes. But one of my very favorites is the bike tour from Arenal Volcano to El Castillo.
This easy half-day mountain bike tour takes you around the base of the volcano on a flat, hard-pack road. If you can ride a bike you can take this tour. At the end of this beautiful ride, you come to the charming mountain town of El Castillo. Im about to tell you a lot more about this little gem!
The bike tour though is more about the journey than the destination. You get to ride through the rainforest with the volcano on one side and the massive Lake Arenal on the other.
This is NOT like any bike ride youve taken before unless you normally see exotic birds, coatis, and monkeys while youre riding your bike! Its easily one of the best tours you can do in La Fortuna.
The tour departs at 8 am or 1 pm and lasts 4 hours. For $80 a person you will get a tour guide, bike rental and safety equipment, transportation to the start, and a picnic on the shores of Lake Arenal.
Get A Birds Eye View Sky Trek
So by now you may have enjoyed a swim, soaked in hot springs, hiked to a waterfall, biked or ridden to a volcano, well, how about flying through the treetops?!
If youre up for it, zip lining in the rainforest is one of the most unforgettable experiences of a Costa Rican vacation and Sky Trek Adventures is one of the best.
But its not just about zipping down with this adventure, its also about getting up there in the first place. The whole thing starts with an exhilarating 2600ft aerial tramway ride to the top of the course. Honestly, I enjoyed this as much as riding down and it alone is one of the best things to do in La Fortuna!
This is one of the only ways I know of that you can be up at the top of the rainforest. I highly recommend experiencing this ecosystem from a birds eye view and get the thrill of zipping through it a bit like a howler monkey on the run.

See The Worlds Last Remaining Wooden Whaling Ship
At one time, the fleet of whaling ships regularly sailing in the Atlantic was 2,700. The very last of these, The Charles W. Morgan, can be seen at Mystic Seaport. The ship, built in 1841, has the distinction of being the only wooden whale ship still afloat. There are a lot of great things to see at Mystic Seaport in general, so dont miss it when visiting Connecticut.
Wander The Arenal Observatory And Trails
As you can see by now, there are a LOT of things to do in the La Fortuna /Arenal area and a lot of them require money. Not this one and that isnt even the best thing about it! First, its important to say that you absolutely should consider staying in the lodge here, in which case of course it does require money. It is a beautiful lodge in one of the most entrancing places on Earth. But you dont have to stay to enjoy this 800+ acre wonderland.
Arenal Observatory invites visitors to visit and walk any of their five well-maintained trails that traverse their property. Whether you want to look for birds, go to a hidden waterfall, explore the treetops or just wander through the property this place is a wonderland. And did I mention its free?! You get to the Arenal Observatory and Trails via the La Fortuna El Castillo road. Leave La Fortuna on Route 142 heading north for 17 km to Tilarán. Once youve reached the Tourist Police Station, turn left and follow the road toward El Castillo and go 5km, then continue on to and follow the signs.

Drive The Crazy Road Towards Monteverde Costa Rica

Adventure starts before you even get near the Monteverde canopy, with whats sure to be an unforgettable road trip. The only way in is Route 606, which has earned an infamous reputation as being extremely challenging to drive on due to its miles of narrow, unpaved roads and hairpin turns that hug steep cliff sides. .
In the dry season Route 606 can be extremely dusty, especially if theres a vehicle ahead kicking up gravel. The wet season is even worse, when it can get so muddy the road is nearly inaccessible.
Tips for driving Route 606
- Travel during daylight hours, as you wont want to try navigating in the dark
- Make sure you rent a 4×4 vehicle with plenty of clearance
- Get full insurance coverageseriously
Now for the good news: taking this crazy road to Monteverde is totally worth the effort. As you wind past a backdrop of the Tilarán Mountain Range, the views of the lush green hills and pristine valley below are phenomenal, and there are plenty of opportunities along the way to pull over and soak it all in.

Yale Peabody Museum Of Natural History
The Peabody Museum, which is located on Yale University campus, has a mandate to increase public understanding of Earth’s history through exhibits and education. The museum is home to replicas of important hominid skeletons, such as the Turkana Boy, the most complete early hominid ever found, and a set of footprints, 3.5 million years old, that were preserved in volcanic ash.
The mammalian evolution and dinosaur halls are highly popular, and contain full-sized fossils of a mastodon, a brontosaurus, and a stegosaurus. The Discovery Room is a great place for children aged 5-12, and has touchable specimens and hands-on activities. Wide-ranging educational programming is available for children, adults, school groups, and summer camps and an after-school program complements the museum’s dedication to education.

Go To A Local Barand Get An Imperial And Chifrijo
And continuing on the topic of food, if you like to drink, then you must visit a local bar. Not the tourist bars, the bar in the small village outside the touristic destinations!
There you can have the ultimate Costa Rican bar experience, surrounded by local farmers enjoying a beer after a hard days work and singing old Spanish ballads on karaoke night. At local bars, you can try a chifrijo which is a mix of rice, beans, pico de gallo and chicharrones with chips.
You can find it on the menu at most Costa Rican bars and sodas but it may be under another name. If you dont see it, just ask. A chifrijo and Imperial beer is just about as Costa Rican as you can get at a bar.

Hike Through The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
A series of hanging bridges, serene nature walks and hiking trails wind through the magnificent Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, which spreads over 14-thousand hectares just a 15 minute drive from Santa Elena.
Worth noting: The Monteverde cloud forest reserve is different from the Santa Elena cloud forest reserve, with the latter being higher in elevation, privately run by the Santa Elena Technical Professional High School, and typically less crowded than the better-known Monteverde reserve.
A nature tour through the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Hundreds of bird and mammal species live in the canopy cover, including monkeys, deer, tapirs, bats and wild cats which are often spotted during Monteverde cloud forest tours. In fact, this is one of the few remaining habitats in the world that supports all six species of the cat family. Oh, and over a thousand different types of creepy-crawlies, including snakes and poisonous tarantulas the size of a human hand. So theres that.
Globe Guide tip: The best time to see cloud forest animals is early in the morning between 6 and 9 AM, or late at night when the nocturnal animals emerge. While the forest is more alive during the cloudier months of July through October when theres more moisture in the air, the mist that creates can make creatures harder to spot from a distance.
