Sightsee Along Michigan 26 North Shore Drive

To take full advantage of the brilliant fall colors, youll want to take a scenic drive, and Michigan 26 North Shore Scenic Drive provides stunning landscapes. The drive from Copper Harbor to Eagle Harbor along Lake Superior has several roadside parks and scenic turnouts along the way. For example, you could have a picnic lunch at Esrey Park, a small park about halfway between Copper Harbor and Eagle Harbor. A rock staircase provides an elevated view of the area. Youll also see the Keweenaw lava flow rocks along this drive, which adds more interest to the landscape.

Once you reach Eagle Harbor, have lunch at the Eagle Harbor Inn, and if youd like to extend your stay in Eagle Harbor, the inn has seven comfortable rooms and an apartment to meet your needs. Next, tour the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse and Museum. In 1980, the current red-brick lighthouse was automated. Today, you can tour the lighthouse and museum and discover more about maritime history in the Keweenaw Peninsula.

Right along the highway, youll find Jacobs Falls, one of Michigans 300 waterfalls. The falls showcase a 40-foot drop that you can easily see without leaving your car.

Pro Tip: With any luck, Jampot will have a jar of wild thimbleberry jam in stock. Products at Jampot are handmade by monks from the nearby Poorrock Abbey. Thimbleberries are a slightly tart regional berry. Unfortunately, this popular jam sells out quickly.

Hike Isle Royale National Park

If youre planning a trip to Isle Royale National Park, the perfect time to do it is during your visit to the Keweenaw Peninsula. With the ferry schedule, youll want to plan more than a day trip. The average stay at the park is about 4 days, but you could manage with an overnight visit. Most camp on the island, but you can rent a cabin or stay at Rock Harbor Lodge.

Once you arrive, check at the visitor center for a complete schedule of ranger talks. The park rangers provide in-depth historical and cultural information during their talks, which occur daily in July and August. With over 160 miles of hiking trails, youll find plenty to explore. Discovering the lighthouses, fishing, paddle sports, and scuba diving will contribute to an active outdoor adventure.

Pro Tip: While the trip to Isle Royale is about six hours from Houghton, it only takes three and one-half hours from Copper Harbor. If you take a seaplane, youll be there in under an hour. If you plan a day trip, you will only have about two hours on the island if you go by ferry.

Best Lodging Options In Eagle Harbor

Eagle Harbor has a few great places to stay while youre exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula, but two really stand out to us. Eagle Harbor Inn has comfortable lodging, and weve already mentioned the wonderful food. You can even bring your dog. Lake Breeze Resort is a historic lodge a short walk from Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. Since its right on the water, you get a panoramic view of Lake Superior.

Just off M-26 about 20 minutes from Eagle Harbor, check out Fresh Coast Cabins near Copper Harbor. The nine cabins are only steps away from the beach with 50-mile views in both directions. Cell and Wi-Fi service are poor, making it the perfect spot to get away from it all.

These are only a few of our favorites. You can take a look at more places to stay in and around Eagle Harbor here.

Scenic Ride Along Brockway Mountain Drive

While M-26 offers picturesque views along the way, Brockway Mountain Drive has the most scenic ride in the area. In fact, its consistently ranked one of the best scenic drives in the Upper Peninsula. Stretching just 9.5 miles, its an alternate route to Copper Harbor and the highest drive above sea level between the Rocky Mountains in the West and the Allegheny Mountains in West Virginia.

There are several places to stop along the way that offer incredible views of inland lakes and Lake Superior. One is a pull-off near a preserve sign that has an excellent view of Mt. Baldy. At Brockway Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary, you can walk a nearly 1-mile trail over exposed lava and conglomerate. Another ideal stop is James H. Klipfel Memorial Nature Sanctuary, which has a moderately difficult ¾-mile trail that loops around an outlook. Brockway Mountain Drive offers fantastic Northern Lights viewing as well.

Well, it was a LONG time ago , but there was volcanic activity in this area, and remnants of this volcanic activity can be seen all around!

While this is specifically about Hunters Point Park, it explains the Keweenaw Peninsulas landscape in general too!

Its also been said that the Keweenaw Peninsula is home to one of the Earths largest lava flows!

Watch this video for more about the geology of the area, including the lava flows that happened long ago.

Houghton-Hancock and the Keweenaw Peninsula

Houghton-Hancock are twin cities that are on either side of the Portage Canal that defines the Keweenaw Peninsula. These are old mining towns with lots of character and home to Michigan Tech University and Finlandia U. Downtown Houghtons main street has been re-furbished and offers some decent brew pubs and restaurants. Theres a nice waterfront hiking/walking trail along the Portage River and we like their RV Park that has great views of the river and is fully paved. If you are attracted to mining history, plan to add some time to your itinerary to explore the museums and exhibits in these two towns and Calumet-Laurium ten miles down the road. One museum of interest to rock hounds would be the Seaman Mineral Museum at the Michigan Technological University in Houghton.

Chamber Website: www.CopperHarbor.org

Copper Harbor began as a mining settlement in the 1840s. The value of the huge copper deposits that were discovered there gave rise to the construction of Fort Wilkins in 1844 to provide some law and order oversight . The natural harbor soon became an important port for shipping copper out and supplies in. The present lighthouse was built in 1867. There is a combined excursion boat tour of the harbor and a narrated tour of the Lighthouse Museum that looks interesting, but we didnt want to leave Hans locked up in the truck for the length of time the tour required.
