The Apple Hill Farm has been around for more than thirty-five years, establishing pick-your-own opportunities for apples and other small fruits in 1995. Visitors wanting to pick their own fruit at the farm will find apples from around Labor Day through Columbus Day, black currants and raspberries from the middle of July through early August, blueberries from the middle of July through the beginning of September, and strawberries from the middle of June to the middle of July. Formerly known as the Silk Farm Center, the NH Audubons McLane Center is an environmental education center offering exhibits, live animal viewings, nature trails, and a nature store.

1. Satisfy your sweet tooth at the Granite State Candy Shoppe
This family owned store has been making chocolates and candies since 1927. On a hot day, cool of with some premium ice cream. Its also a great place to find gifts to bring home.
2. Play in a Pocket Park
Once you have your sweets, follow the Merrimack River in the sidewalk to Bicentennial Square. My kids loved climbing on the stone sculptures and listening to the waterfall.
3. Shop till you drop on Main Street
Main Street in Concord is the perfect place to spend the day wandering. Not only are there endless shops to explore, but the street itself has permanent artwork and sculptures on display.
Some of my favorite shops are Bona Fide Green Goods and Simply Birkenstock. Joe Kings Shoe Shop not only has a great selection of kids shoes and boots but their staff is super patient and will help you find just what you need.
At the end of Main Street, dont miss Gibsons Bookstore. There is a wide selection of childrens book and educational toys and is always my kids favorite stop.
4. Explore space at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center
I think most people my age can remember exactly where they were when the Challenger exploded. My class sat in our school library where they had wheeled in a giant television for us to watch the take-off. I remember the explosion and the panicked teaches not sure how to handle it all, just quickly shuffling us back to class.

Red River Theater is no ordinary cinema and as such it deserves its place in this list. It was opened in 2007 after the local community put together a seven year project to create this state-of-the-art cinema that would show art house films. The cinema has three screens and cost the local community $1.8 million dollars. The cinema does not play mainstream movies instead focuses on art house productions and local movies instead. The cinema has a huge place in the hearts of the community and is an important feature in the New Hampshire cultural scene.

The Carter Hill Orchard in Concord is a family-owned and operated farm that consists of much more than simply an apple orchard. The grounds also include hiking trails, an on-site bakery, and a country store, as well as an observation tower that offers great views of the occasional raptor and the mountains of the New Hampshire region. The fruit available to visitors at the Carter Hill Orchard, varies throughout the year. Few things strike the hearts of Concord natives more deeply than the space shuttle Challenger disaster that took the life of beloved Concord teacher Christa McAuliffe, the would-be first teacher in space. This science center is dedicated to her and Alan Shepard, the first American in space and a native of East Derry, NH. Its mission is to spark interest in today’s youth by exploring aviation and astronomy, and earth and space sciences.
The family-favorite attraction here is the planetarium, which displays over 110,000 stars in its twice-daily shows. Guests can also explore the observatory, and the center hosts special events throughout the year to show novice stargazers how to get the most of their telescopes. The museum also has an amateur radio station that can contact the space station when it is in the right position. The rest of the museum is filled with a variety of exhibits, including hands-on and educational opportunities, as well as artifacts from space and air travel.
Permanent exhibits feature a number of space-themed exhibits including those exploring a lunar habitat, living and working in space, human physiology in space, and the sun. There is also a full-size model of the Mercury Capsule that Alan Shepard was in, and a model of the space shuttle, as well as a full-sized replica of a Mercury-Redstone rocket and an actual XF8U-2 Crusader Jet.

The Audubon Center is an excellent place to learn about nature and explore during all seasons. The biggest draw, of course, is the center’s 30 miles of trails that explore the woodlands, grasslands, and shoreline of Great Turkey Pond.
While exploring the 12 acres of conservation land, visitors can spot nesting birds like the eastern bluebird and American kestrel, as well as migrating birds in season. Cattle from a nearby farm can be seen grazing in the meadow, and in the spring, visitors can find wood frogs and peepers in the vernal pools. This is a lovely area to explore in the autumn while enjoying the bright foliage, and a popular place for snowshoeing in the winter.
