Concord, Massachusetts

Lexington and Concord are known as the places where the American Revolutionary War began. A beautiful bronze sculpture by Daniel Chester French commemorates this historic event. Founded in 1635, Concord was the first inland settlement to become incorporated in the state of Massachusetts. On April 19, 1775, the shot heard round the world, commencing the beginning of the War for Independence, was fired here, and many consider Concord to be the birthplace of the nation.

The Wayside Concord Massachusetts

The Wayside is a historic estate that dates back to 1717. Inspiration for Little Women came from time spent in the house. The Wayside was a part of the Underground Railroad, a refuge for slaves on the run. A plaque at the house recognizes the role the Alcott family played to support the Underground Railroad.

Three noted American authors lived at the property throughout history. In 1927, it was opened to the public and later declared a National Historic Landmark. It is situated within Minute Man National Historic Park.

Old North Bridge Concord Ma

The wooden bridge that spans the Concord River at the confluence of the Assabet and Sudbury Rivers is a replica of the one that was made famous on the first day of the American War of Independence. On 19 April 1775, 400 colonists outnumbered the British infantry, forcing them to retreat across the bridge. A shot rang out and history was made. It was the shot heard around the world, as Ralph Waldo Emerson described it. The original bridge had been built in the 1760s but was dismantled in 1793. The present bridge was built in 2005. It is situated in the Minute Man Historical Park.

Concord Museum Concord Massachusetts

Concord has a long track record of recording its history. After the bicentennial celebrations in 1836, Cummings Davis started collecting artifacts. In 1886, 2000 of these were transferred to the Concord Antiquarian Society. A year later the house of the saddler, Reuben Brown was purchased for the purpose of housing the collection. Through the years, several additions were made to the complex. Highlights of the collections are a spearhead from the Ice Age, Paul Revere’s lantern, Henry David Thoreau’s desk and spy glass, a recreation of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s study and a gallery devoted to Thomas Dugan, a freed slave who became a successful farmer.

Visit The Nearby Town Of Lincoln

The town of Lincoln, just ten minutes from Lexington and Concord, is lesser known than its neighbors. Even so, we had time to see a little bit of it, and we want to point out the colonial style homes, the deCordova Museum and sculpture park, Hartwell Tavern and Sandy Pond . This town also played a part in the American Revolution, although it did not become as famous.

Find Your Peace And Part Of History At Thoreau Cabin Site

If youre in the mood for a bit of nature, maybe youd like to come down to Thoreaus cabin.

In 1945, a team of archaeologists discovered an abandoned cabin on the outskirts of Concord and what may have been built by author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau.

During his time at the cabin, which was known as Walden Pond, Thoreau made many observations about nature and spent much time reflecting upon his life he described these reflections in two books titled Walden and Civil Disobedience .

It is not only Thoreaus original hearthstone that was discovered but also a number of other important artifacts relating to his life, which now reside at the Thoreau Institute.

After Thoreau left Walden, his cabin was completely dismantled, but its iconic image survives as seen in recreated cabins that today exist in places such as the Thoreau Institute and Walden Pond.

It’s possible to visit Thoreaus cabin at the Walden Pond State Reservation, following through its Pond Path.

The trails near Thoreaus cabin have been known to be very slippery in the winter, so its probably safer that you turn around during the freezing cold months.

A Day Of History And Nature In Concord Massachusetts Including Thoreaus Walden Pond

My husband is a high school Literature teacher, and it has long been on my bucket list to visit Walden Pond. When I had an out-of-town relative visit who was also interested in transcendentalism, we decided the time had come to see the pond. I did not realize how many things to do in Concord Massachusetts there are, not only related to the distinguished group of authors who lived here in the 1800s, but also to the reason they came here- nature.

Henry David Thoreau came to live on a friend of his, Ralph Waldo Emersons, property on Walden Pond. He wanted to disconnect himself to some extent from society, although he still took the two-and-a-half-mile walk into Concord each day. From this experience, Thoreau wrote the novel, Walden. He was active and influential in the New England transcendental movement. By visiting Concord, you can have a personal, transcendent moment. You can steep yourself in nature, while also taking a figurative walk into a town filled with historic colonial houses, a classic town green complimented with churches and good food.
