Kayaking In Mount Pleasant

Charleston is a port city, shaped by trade and surrounded by beautiful beaches and lovely islands. Spend the day exploring this other side of Charleston — the seaside. Coastal Expeditions offers 3-hour kayaking tours that take you down Shem Creek, past the remains of Charleston’s fishing fleet, out to Crab Bank Seabird Sanctuary, and to the most beautiful view of Charleston there is.

Tuck Into Some Seafood

Southern food stands up to its reputation, and Charleston has almost too many options of wonderful places to eat. You would have to try to find a bad meal here! Hymans Seafood is absolutely legendary get the fried green tomatoes and the shrimp and grits. You can worry about your cholesterol some other day. Three adult entrees and an appetizer to share would be more than enough for a family of four.

We also liked the Oyster House, Blossom, Charleston Crab House and Bowens Island Seafood. Husk, Hanks and Magnolias also came highly recommended, but well have to save those for another visit. Plan ahead, though, if you have a particular restaurant in mind. Some already small eateries are limiting their indoor seating make your reservations early.

Enjoy A Historic Home Tour

Part of what makes Charleston so beautiful are the many large historic homes gracing the cobblestone streets. Many of the homes are open to the public for a fee with guided and/or self-guided tours. Some popular historic homes include The Williams Mansion, the Edmondston-Alston House, and the Joseph Manigault House. Theres even an app,GPSMyCity, that will turn your device into a tour guide. If you want a more intimate experience for your family, consider hiring a private guide. If you have older kids, they may have already learned about this history in school. Its a great way for them to connect what they have learned from textbooks to real life.

Get Wet At One Of The Charleston County Water Parks

Teenagers love to get wet at one of the three Charleston County water parks. Two of the waterparks, Whirlin Waters and Splash Zone, have more to offer older guests with long slides, lazy rivers, and traditional swimming pools. Whirlin Waters is the largest water park with the most to offer older guests, including a wave pool, but it is also the most expensive, charging $19.99 per person 48 and taller .

However, if you are looking for a great way to spend the day in the Charleston heat, you cant go wrong with Charlestons budget-friendly water parks. There are special prices if you want to go after 3 pm, which is a good idea Monday through Friday during the summer months when day camps utilize the park for field trips. You can call ahead to the park and ask for the best day to visit based on the number of field trips scheduled. Personally, my family spends their time at Splash Zone because the park is small enough that I can see my children from anywhere, but there is enough for them to do that they do not get bored.

Charleston is beautiful at any season and in any weather , but there’s just something about the year-end festivities that brings our community together with both neighbors and visitors.

Or, simply choose to guide yourself through the lights and decorations set up in any day of the week or at the Holiday Magic Market on weekends before Christmas.
