How To Spend A Day In Carrollton
The first thing I notice when I pull off I-35 and turn into Carrolltons town square is the grain silo. Erected in 1950, it towers 110 feet over the downtowns little storefronts, which date to a time when the suburb was known as a dusty grain and gravel railroad depot. Today, a new light-rail connection from Dallas to Denton has helped rejuvenate the historic center. Apartment buildings have sprouted up on its edge, Cane Rosso has moved in, and the silo has been transformed into one of the worlds tallest indoor rock climbing gyms.
The squares blend of old and new is a little jarring but quaint. There are the kinds of shops youd expect in any little Texas town: The Finishing Touch Antique Mall, The Old Craft Store, Beth Maries Old Fashioned Ice Cream parlor. But the former Bank of Carrollton building is now an Apple retailer, and the massive grain shed beneath the silo is now occupied by 3 Nations Brewing. I make a note to return during happy hour, but I have more pressing errands to run.
About 2.5 miles north of the historic downtown is Koreatown Carrollton, a dizzying collection of eclectic restaurants, mom-and-pop shops, and big-name Asian retail chains. It is a little odd that one of North Texas most vibrant ethnic shopping districts is located in three otherwise nondescript strip malls clustered around the intersection of Old Denton Road and the President George Bush Turnpike, but it is also indicative of the regions expansive growth.

Head to this resto-bar for some good food, chilled beer, and peppy music. This casual place is ideal for a relaxed weekend dinner, or to meet up with friends. They serve a frequently changing selection of local craft brews which makes every visit an interesting one. Their wings are definitely worth a try, but the whole menu enjoys a good reputation. They even have trivia nights and open mic to make it all a bit more fun.

This museum, run by a non-profit organization, is dedicated to the study and presentation of textiles and quilts. Situated in a renovated warehouse, this museum was opened to the public in 2012 in the historic downtown area. The exhibits change every three to four months, and there is also a small gift shop on the premises. You can get a glimpse of both decades-old quilts and those that are just a few months old. Quilting camps for children are also frequently conducted here.

As any visitor to the Southeastern Quilt and Textile Museum will already have realised, the textile industry has played a huge part in creating the Carrollton we know and love.
This heritage can be explored in greater detail thanks to the creation of the West Georgia Textile Heritage Trail.
Stretching from Dalton to Columbus, its central region includes Carrollton. Here, several mills were built to convert raw cotton fibres into clothing, since the railroad made transport of the finished products across the country all the easier.
The Maryon Hosiery Mill building is one of the points on this trail, while other privately-owned structures include the Mandeville Mill built in 1899.
