Wrights goal in designing the home was to bring man closer to nature. With impressive surroundings, including a flowing stream, varied plant life and waterfalls, Wright had plenty of inspiration. He found the site for Kaufmanns home right above a waterfall hence the name Fallingwater. He used stone flooring and corner windows that opened out among other design elements to invite the outside in and bring nature closer.

The design caught the nations eye, and Wright was featured on the cover of Time in 1937 in front of concept art for the home. Within a few decades, the public would be invited inside the home. Fallingwater opened to the public in 1964 and has since been .

Explore The Quaint Town Of Boiling Springs

A short 10-minute drive southeast of Carlisle, youll find the adorable town of Boiling Springs. Named after the artesian well springs found in the area, the boiling factor is not based on their temperatures. Rather, its due to the unique hydrogeological feature of tough, basalt rock cutting through the limestone bedrock to form a v below the surface of the earth.

The most popular spot in town is definitely Childrens Lake where youll often find fisherman and paddlers enjoying the water. Youll see markers for the Appalachian Trail close by since it runs right through town. As such, Boiling Springs was named one of 40+ Appalachian Trail Communities who directly support the trail and those who hike it.

Across from Childrens Lake youll find Caffe 101, an adorable little spot for breakfast, coffee or a light meal. Youll often see patrons enjoying their coffee while soaking up the sun on their patio. Stop in for a bite to eat as they have a number of items ranging from oatmeal to bagels to wraps. I highly recommend their eggs benedict as its a bit different than most. They dont use a hollandaise sauce per se but rather a creamier version that really is a treat for the tastebuds!

Arts & Culture Paints A Masterpiece Downtown

One area of Carlisle’s historic downtown that’s noticeably on display is the arts and culture. We can’t think of a better example than the Carlisle Theatre. Once known as the Comerford, this landmark opened in 1939 and grew to include musical acts, live theatrical productions, and award-winning films. The theatre also recently upgraded to digital capabilities.

There are also some very creative and passionate art displays throughout downtown Carlisle and you won’t want to leave without taking some of them home. The American Artisan Gallery on Hanover Street offers beautifully crafted art items, including ceramics, glass, jewelry, and fine art. It’s no wonder they were named 2014’s Best In The Valley for Best Shopping. Since opening in 1976, The Garden Gallery has showcased fine art and crafts, and is famous for their custom framing and restoration. Unique glasswork art is the specialty at LeTort Glass, where you can leave with some art or even take classes on how to make your own.

Those wanting to take home a masterpiece painting should visit Nancy Stamm’s Galleria, where her distinct style has made its footprint around the world. Creativity is endless at the Trout Gallery at Dickinson College with one-of-a-kind exhibits on display. End your arts journey at CALC – Carlisle Arts & Learning Center, which showcases the finest art pieces from the community and offers classes to explore your own creativity.
