Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater

5 Fun Things To Do This Weekend In Central PA 1-20-2020

For a day trip from Pittsburgh, check out Frank Lloyd Wrights Fallingwater about an hour southeast of the city. On your trip, youll witness a unique home and architectural masterpiece, all while learning the rich history of the build.

Businessman Edgar Kaufmann commissioned the home as a weekend house from Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935. The house was completed two years later, and the result became Wrights most acclaimed work known as Fallingwater.

Wrights goal in designing the home was to bring man closer to nature. With impressive surroundings, including a flowing stream, varied plant life and waterfalls, Wright had plenty of inspiration. He found the site for Kaufmanns home right above a waterfall hence the name Fallingwater. He used stone flooring and corner windows that opened out among other design elements to invite the outside in and bring nature closer.

The design caught the nations eye, and Wright was featured on the cover of Time in 1937 in front of concept art for the home. Within a few decades, the public would be invited inside the home. Fallingwater opened to the public in 1964 and has since been .

If all this stunning architecture has built up your appetite, grab a light meal at The Fallingwater Café. For something later in the day after your visit, try out the Ohiopyle House Cafe, a perfect spot for a family visit or a couple looking for a cozy meal.

Enjoy Some Delicious Eats

There are more restaurants in Carlisle than you can shake a stick at, but who doesnt love a brewery which has great food too? Head to Molly Pitcher Brewing Company if youre looking for delicious bites to go with your brews.

The brewery is named after one of the towns most famous residents, Mary Hays McCauley who was known as Molly Pitcher. Said to have taken her husbands place as a gunner during the Revolutionary War, she also cared for injured soldiers by carrying water to them. The owners wanted to show their hometown pride and focus on the community, hence the name was chosen. It just so happens that the brewery is located close to where Molly Pitcher herself is buried in the Old Graveyard!

Settle in for some seriously delicious eats that cater to all dietary needs. From vegan bites to the meatiest of burgers, this is a great spot for large groups and solo travellers alike. I indulged in their Braised Bacon Sandwich with a side salad. Balance is key, right? This smokey slice of deliciousness is braised in garlic and Molly Pitchers very own IPA, grilled with barley malt and a honey glaze to be topped with jalapeno slaw on a fresh brioche bun. Its the perfect balance of sweet and spicy that even those who cant really handle heat will enjoy.

As you can probably tell, your biggest struggle will be trying to pick your poison because both their menu and tap list have incredible choices!
