Great, fun mountain course with water and lots of canyons to cross. Medium challenging and very cost effective . Lots of elevation changes and bunkers, some of which are very deep and therefore very challenging.
Enjoy The Scenery Along Frying Pan Road
Starting in the town of Basalt, Frying Pan Road travels along the Frying Pan River for 42.3 miles to the Ruedi Reservoir. The scenery through this section of the White River National Forest is beautiful and includes canyons and red rock walls.
The road is closed in the winter, but its well-maintained at all other times. The Frying Pan River is well-known for being a top trout fishing spot, and there are plenty of places to stop along the way where you can cast your rod. If you wish to enjoy even more seclusion and remoteness, the road keeps going past the reservoir.
Head Off The Beaten Path
You dont need to stay downtown to experience Carbondales ample creativity. Seven minutes northeast is the uber-modern Powers Art Center. It was founded in 2014 as a memorial to John G. Powers, a Roaring Fork Valley arts pioneer who with his wife Kimiko collected numerous contemporary works. Go here for an impressive Jasper Johns prints collection , as well as for rotating exhibits, free of charge.

In 1903, Southern Illinois University Carbondale , community residents, and local professionals came together to form the Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra .
The orchestra, which comprises professors and students from SIU and community members, routinely performs classical compositions by composers like Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn.
In addition to hosting an annual Solo competition for students, SISO presents performances by Illinois solo performers, area choruses, and opera companies each year.
SISO also provides educational concerts for children in the region several times a year.
The orchestra hires at least a dozen professional Illinois musicians for each show.
Because no other orchestra exists in this part of Illinois, it is the only one to perform in the following locales: Pulaski and Washington Counties , Jackson County , Williamson County, and Union County .

The best way to get a taste of the spectacular scenery of this area without having to traverse into the backcountry on foot is with a scenic drive along the West Elk Loop Scenic and Historic Byway. At 205 miles long, it takes about six to eight hours to drive this route, but its well worth it.
The voyage starts in Carbondale and goes through the Crystal River Valley. Along the way, you will see stunning scenery, with mountains, fields of wildflowers, sprawling farmlands, and ranches.

There is blue-ribbon fishing, stand up paddle boarding on the Roaring Forks calmer waters, meandering hikes, plenty of blue ski runs nearby come winter, and most exquisitely, the paved 42-mile Rio Grande Trail, an enchanting pedal, which runs from Aspen through Snowmass and then Carbondale, ending in Glenwood. This nationally recognized multi-use trail, once the rail bed for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad, wends through Colorados rugged landscape of sages, brush oak and Ponderosa pines along the banks of the Roaring Fork. It is an enchanting coast , with rarely a car in sight and public transport pick-up in place so bikers can choose to tackle manageable segments. A crushed gravel shoulder alongside the pavement for a good 18 miles offers softer footing for horses and joggers. In the winter, sections are groomed for cross-country skiing.

The Community Farmers Market is a winter season indoor market that provides organic and sustainably grown produce, like sweet potatoes, butternut and acorn squash, lettuce, and greens. Shoppers may find a selection of baked goods, crafts, teas, holiday decorations, meats, eggs, cheese, herbs, mushrooms, sodas, herbal medicines, soaps, body products, crafts, homemade pet treats, jams, jellies, and other canned goods.
Several vendors also offer ready-to-eat foods. The market is open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., from December 1-March 31, at the Carbondale Community High School.

Take A Scenic Drive Along The Independence Pass
There are many scenic drives around the Carbondale area, but the Independence pass is definitely worth it if youre in the area during the summer months. This 20-mile picturesque route travels through the Sawatch Mountains and along the Roaring Fork River.
As you make your way along the Continental Divide, youll climb 12,000 feet above sea level. En route, youll experience some sharp turns, soaring cliffs, and lush forest. There are picnic areas and look-offs at various points along the way, and when you reach the top, you can stretch your legs on the walking trail that leads to a scenic look-off. At this point, you can turn back and go the way you came or keep driving past Twin Lakes.
