This is an enchanting place for tea. I’m from Houston, visiting Wilmington, and I drove an hour just to experience it it was worth every mile! The quaint setting is charming and inviting, exactly what you’d would expect the service was exceptional and the food…was delicious!I started off with the chilled strawberry soup, along with a strawberry and kiwi tea – a perfect match. The house salad was just the right size to get ready for the main event! The savories were delightful, a group of 5 delicious sandwiches. The scone course was a white chocolate lavender, with just the right amount of floral taste. For the sweets course, the madeleine was light and appealing, and the chocolate covered strawberry was delectable, along with the marinated fruit.I felt I was a princess for the day while dining here! Area Overviewexperience The Rich History Amazing Tastes Of Coastal North Carolina
Officially known as the Town of Calabash, this small coastal city proudly refers to itself as The Seafood Capital of the World.
There are plenty of reasons to support this claim. Not only does Calabash boast more than 30 seafood restaurants amid a permanent population of just over 2,000, but there are Calabash-style restaurants, known for the lightly battered and deep-fried tradition of cooking, all over the U.S.
In fact, according to local legend, popular 1940s radio personality Jimmy Durante got his famous catch phrase Goodnight, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are from his frequent visits to the town.
Today tourists come for the seafood as well as the two local beaches, Sunset Beach and Holden Beach, eight championship golf courses and a waterfront marina that is known for producing large hauls of fish, shrimp and crab.
Calabash has a rich history that dates back to 1691, but the tiny fishing village didnt incorporate until 1973.
The period since has seen modern development in the old fishing outpost, including new homes and condo developments along the coast, the addition of world-class golf courses, and restaurants, shopping and other businesses along the Highway 17 corridor.
Calabash Fire Department has an excellent rating, and the area is patrolled by the Brunswick County Sheriffs Department.

Seafood Capital Of The World

In the late 40s and early 50s, Calabash became known for its seafood and was named the “Seafood Capital of the World”. Today’s Calabash is no longer the fishing village it once was, but it still has the feel of a fishing village.
Calabash’s reputation as the “Seafood Capital of the World” is due in large part to its more than 30 seafood restaurants in a square-mile area that hosts more than one million diners each year. Many of the restaurants are right on the water, where their docks are used by fishing boats to unload fish directly into the restaurants’ back doors. Be sure to ask for your dinner “Calabash-style,” which is a local seafood method popular with locals and visitors alike.
This port-side town is just over the bridge from Sunset Beach, but its rustic, old-world charm makes it feel miles away. Calabash is still a bustling fishing village that relies on its natural resources for business and tourism. There are also numerous specialty shops featuring gourmet food and boutiques filled with captivating wares, as well as many local art galleries offering the works of various artists, some local. Calabash is also surrounded by six beautiful golf courses.
Due to Calabash’s locationit’s the southernmost river town and it’s also near the Atlantic OceanCalabash was the site of the first Calabash Restaurant, an oyster roast that opened in 1935.

If you have plans to visit United States and are not sure if Calabash should be included in your itinerary, keep reading. In this list, we have put together some of the things to do in Calabash and around. We have a hunch that if you include this city in your travel plans, you will be thrilled you did so.
A Bit Of Calabash History
As far back as the 1930s, fishermen would gather under the trees near Calabashs waterfront to cook the days catch in large pots. People from the town came to see what had been caught and to buy any leftover cooked seafood. Soon, enterprising locals began cooking up tubs of deep-fried seafood to sell. These open air-air venues were the beginning of several family-owned seafood restaurants that are still in existence today, each claiming to have been the first Calabash-style establishment.
Today, Calabash-style seafood is all about fresh seafood and the way it is prepared. The term refers to the method of cooking flounder, shrimp, oysters, clam strips, deviled crabs and scallops, which have been dipped in a dry seasoned cornmeal batter and then deep fried in hot oil. Unlike the heavy, greasy seafood often prepared with a wet batter crust, this style produces a light, crusty coating on the seafood. A Calabash-style meal traditionally includes a generous basket of Hush Puppies and a side of creamy coleslaw.
