Watch The Lighting Of Breckenridge
The first weekend of December marks the transformation of Breckenridge into a magical holiday winterland.
Youll get a chance to meet Santa, participate in a snowman building contest, run in the Race of the Santas, and finish out the evening with the Lighting of Breckenridge.
This is a family-friendly experience for everyone, even pets. Bring your festive Fido for a holiday dog parade.
The event starts on December 4, 2021 and lasts throughout the weekend.
How To Get To Breckenridge Colorado
Youll need to drive here as there is no airport in Breckenridge. The closest airport would probably be Aspen, which is still two hours away. Denver to Breckenridge is a four-hour drive and Salt Lake City is about a five-hour drive from Breckenridge.
Driving up I-70 in Colorado can be a little intense. Be careful and alert driving is best during the day. Afternoon and evenings can mean heavy traffic. If returning to Denver on a Sunday night, plan an extra 1-3 hours for traffic.
If youd like a meal and a break while driving up from Denver, be sure to visit Beau Joes Pizza. Its a classic for Colorado natives and the original location in Idaho Springs is the best to visit. They serve up pizzas with a large, bready crust that you can fill with honey as a dessert!
Blue River Recpath Breckenridge Colorado
The Blue River Recpath travels 7.5 miles between the towns of Breckenridge and Frisco, passing through the beautiful Blue River Valley and along Highway 9. The trail passes both the Dillon Reservoir and the Blue River and trail users can enjoy scenic views of the Tenmile mountain range in the distance. The trail is paved for its entire length and most of the trail can be biked. It features only a bit of a climb in elevation but the perceived difficulty may be amplified by the high elevation if you aren’t used to it. From the Blue River Recpath, visitors can connect to other trails, such as the Dillion Reservoir Recpath and the Tenmile Recpath.

Things You Must Do In Breckenridge This Winter
This past winter our family went on our first ever White Christmas vacation. We are from Texas and our winters are usually in the mid 60s with unspeakable amounts of humidity. We had been pestering our Dad for years to take us somewhere cold for Christmas where we could actually see snow! Finally, he conceded. Ormore like my mom booked it and said hey, weve booked a house in Breckenridge, youre going. But, surprisingly we all had a really great time. This post isnt about us though, its about YOU! So, if you are interested you can read all about our family trip here.
I am guessing you have a trip to Breckenridge planned soon and are looking for some things to do while you are there. Breckenridge is a beautiful town, especially in the winter. It is definitely worth the trip, but be prepared to fork over some cash for this trip.
Here is my list of 10 Things You Must Do in Breckenridge This Winter!:
Horseback Riding In The Rockies
We love riding horses and do it whenever were in the Rocky Mountains, whether its one of our things to do in Big Sky, MT or if were exploring Glacier Country, we always try to get on the trail. Riding horses is one of the best things to do in Breckenridge in summer because you get the views and outdoor experience of hiking, but without the exhaustion that sometimes happens at higher elevations.
There are some beautiful valleys and ridges to explore in Breckenridge, and depending on your riding skill level, there are both short and full day rides.
Note: it is customary to tip your trail guide. As a former horseman myself I know how much the additional gratuity is appreciated, especially as the season starts or winds down.
Located just outside of downtown Breckenridge, just up the ski slopes in the summertime, Breckenridge Stables does a variety of horseback riding tours. If you arent a frequent rider, we recommend the 90 minute tour through the nearby National Forest. The guides are really knowledgeable and can give you a great perspective and experience during the hour and a half ride.
If youre visiting during the winter months, you can also visit Breckenridge Stables for sleigh rides. What an awesome way to get out in the snow if youre not a skier!

Other Activities With Kids In Breckenridge
- Breckenridge Escape Room. We tried this on our last visit and had a hoot! We did the Yeti experience and my boys still talk about solving the puzzle. It is a bit expensive, but a super fun time.
- Shopping on Main Street. Free and fun to window shop. A wonderful blend of shops are available from the expensive to the cheap, touristy t-shirts. Grab a cookie for us!
- Hikes. The number one summer activity in Breckenridge is definitely hiking. There are WAY too many hikes available to list here. I love using the AllTrails App for recent reviews and info. We like hiking around Dillon Lake so the kids can throw rocks in its relatively flat as well. With thousands of mountain land acres in Breckenridge, you are guaranteed to find some amazing views.
- Breck Adventure Park and Gondola. Another activity on the speedy side, but full of fun. Head up the Gondola to the Adventure Park. Here you can do the alpine slide, mine for gems, do a ropes course, and more. This place shuts down often in the afternoon for lightning, so its best to go in the morning. If you can stay all day, the combo ticket is best, but if the weather will be a problem, go a-la-carte. Learn more about this here.
- Sawmill Museum. We pass this on the way to the timeshare each year and finally stopped to check it out this last year. Its small and self-guided, but fascinating. There are some lovely trails leading from this spot as well. We packed a picnic lunch and went as far as the kids wanted to.
Peak 9 Breckenridge Colorado
Breckenridge Ski Area’s Peak 9 is the second oldest peak in the park. The bottom half of the peak is a learning area for beginners, while the upper level features intermediate level blue runs. Peak 9 features multiple chair lifts to access the ski terrain as well as numerous restaurants for those who need to re-charge from a hard day on the slopes. With something for every level of skier and boarder, Peak 9 is a great place to spend a day on the mountain at Breckenridge.

Stroll the Riverwalk and Alpine Garden
Downtown Breckenridge is built on the east side of the Blue River which runs through town. Stretching nearly the length of the city, the Riverwalk is another wonderful place to relax and enjoy the town. Youll find footbridges and park spaces all over, so its a great afternoon activity to just wander. There are also fewer people in the Riverwalk area than a block over on Main Street, so its a fantastic way to avoid crowds.
