Things To Do In Breckenridge Summer 2020

Free Museum At The Breckenridge Welcome Center

Breckenridge, Colorado | Things To Do In Summer/Fall in 4K | Sapphire Point, Blue Lakes, Boreas Pass

The Breckenridge Welcome Center is in the heart of downtown. You can get advice and guides, use restrooms but my favorite part is the interactive museum. And bonus its free!

During the construction of the welcome center, demolition crews discovered a 19th century log cabin, which is now part of the museum. The museum also includes info and history on the Gulch Wildlife Preserve, the Native American settlement, gold mining and much more.

Explore The Craft Brew Scene

Broken Compass Brewery has a casual dog-friendly environment. Their ski-lift seating adds to the fun ski atmosphere. Rocky Mountain snowmelt water makes the Broken Compass beer unique. Two of my favorite beers are the Chili Pepper Pale Ale and the Coconut Porter. The full-flavored Coconut Porter, with roasted organic coconut, has you thinking youre in the Caribbean. The Chili Pepper Pale Ale combines five chili peppers to provide a smooth brew with heat that doesnt burn your mouth. If you biked out to Broken Compass from town, dont worry about biking back after a few beers. They offer a complimentary service to take you back to Breckenridge.

Another player in Brecks craft brew scene is the Breckenridge Tap House with over 35 choices, its the largest craft beer selection in Summit County. If you prefer liquor, you can choose from over 125 premium whiskeys or 130 premium tequilas. Come for a brew and stay for dinner. Breckenridge Tap Houses slow-braised meat tacos that stay in the oven for 24 hours will eliminate your hunger. The meat is so tender.

Take A Tour From The Breckenridge Heritage Alliance

I love history and the Breckenridge Heritage Alliance members know all about Brecks colorful past. In addition to managing several historic residences in town that are free to visit, they also offer guided hikes and historic tours. Here are three of our favorites.

Haunted Tour of Breckenridge. Life in 1800s Breckenridge was hard, and several folks met with untimely deaths, although according to locals, not everyone has departed.

The Haunted Tour of Breckenridge is more historical than scary, but there are a few stories that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. The ghost stories also give a glimpse of real life in a western mining town and what it took to survive.

Stories of prostitution, cannibalism and gruesome mining accidents are part of this tour, although guides leave any detail to your imagination. We took my 8-year-old and it was fine, he focused more on the ghosts than the story of their mortal counterpart.

Preston Mill Ghost Town Tour. Visiting a ghost town was on my list when we came to Colorado, so I was super excited about this hike that includes a picnic lunch.

The hike itself has some steeper inclines that might take younger kids a bit longer, but its not difficult and the guide goes at a leisurely pace. Along the way to the former town of Preston Mill, you pass abandon gold mines and equipment, a nice diversion if your child is like my youngest and balks at the mention of hike.

Things To Do In Breckenridge And Summit County

67 miles W. of Denver, 114 miles NW of Colorado Springs, 23 miles E. of Vail

Breckenridge, founded in 1859, and its neighbors throughout Summit County comprise a major outdoor recreation center, with skiing in winter and fishing, hiking, and mountain biking in summer. But the area actually offers much more, with a number of historical attractions, good shopping opportunities, fine restaurants, and some interesting places to stay. The town of Breckenridge is a good place to base yourself, as the entire Victorian core of this 19th-century mining town has been carefully preserved, with colorfully painted shops and restaurants occupying the old buildings, most dating from the 1880s and 1890s.

Most of the mountain towns that surround the area’s excellent ski resorts — Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper, Keystone, and Loveland — were barely on the map in the 1880s, when the rest of the state was laying claim to its stake of history. Breckenridge, however, was a prosperous mining town in 1887 when the largest gold nugget ever found in Colorado, “Tom’s Baby,” was unearthed there. It weighed 13 pounds, 7 ounces, and is now in the Colorado History Museum in Denver. Today these communities are strictly in the tourism business and fill to capacity during peak seasons. Breckenridge, for example, has a year-round population of only 2,800 people, but swells to almost 34,000 during its top tourism times.

Edwin Carter Discovery Center Breckenridge Colorado

The Edwin Carter Discovery Center is a museum and former home of Edwin Carter, who came to Colorado in the mid-1800s to search for gold. He was greatly affected by the negative impact that mining had on the environment, and became very interested in Rocky Mountain wildlife. He became a taxidermist and curated and maintained a collection of wildlife specimens and at the time of his death had more than 3,300 specimens in his collection. Many of these items are now on display in Denver’s Museum of Nature and Science. However, a few of them remain in the home today. The center honors the life of Carter and also features hands-on exhibits including a taxidermy workbench. Additionally, the center has a theater and a room dedicated to children.
