Provisioning Up On Bequia
Villas can often be pre-stocked with groceries. If you are doing your own grocery shopping, I would recommend Doriss Fresh Food and Yacht Provisioning in Port Elizabeth. Doris has an exceptional assortment, much of which I was surprised to find on such a remote island.
More basic provisions can be found at Knights Trading along the front in Port Elizabeth. The Upper Crust Bakery will deliver, but you must place your order at least a day ahead. Be sure to ask about their daily specials.
Note: Be wary of the Rasta Market that sells fresh fruit and vegetables. If you love a little bartering and banter, this might be the place for you. Otherwise, there are plenty of other stands along the front to choose from. In my own experience, I passed quickly by some of the more aggressive sellers and shopped from a nice lady towards the back.
Things To Do On Bequia St Vincent And The Grenadines
You are going to the wrong island. the wild-haired woman sitting beside us at a tiny Caribbean airport announced. Our flight to Barbados had been delayed and we were chit-chatting while I madly bounced a two year old on my lap desperately trying to avoid the dreaded meltdown.
This vibrant free spirit went on to extoll the virtues of Bequia one of the lesser known islands making up part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines . Bequia truly sounded special so special, that this conversation stuck with me for many years. Over a decade in fact, as it took us that long to finally make our way there.
Snorkeling And Sailing In The Tobago Cays
In the southern Grenadines, the Tobago Cays encompass five small, uninhabited islands that are now the key feature of the Tobago Cays Marine Park. Protected by reefs, the beaches offer calm clear waters for swimming and snorkeling, and the surrounding coral gardens are rich in marine life.
Snorkelers and divers can spot sea turtles, as well as stingrays, barracuda, and shoals of reef fish. Day trips to the Tobago Cays are one of the top things to do in St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and many boaters anchor here to frolic in the crystal clear waters and bask on the beaches.

The Best Time To Go To Bequia
High season is from December through to April. This is when it is warm and mainly dry . It is busiest during these months with many visitors from Europe and North America. It is also cruise season. Whilst the harbour in Bequia isnt big enough to accommodate huge ships, many 200 to 300-passenger vessels do stop here. When a ship is in port, the small beaches are often very crowded not ideal if you have come to the island seeking peace and quiet.
For me, its best to visit Bequia in May and June or November. During these shoulder months, the weather is still good and hotels drop their rates to attract travellers.
Activities On St Vincent
Located just 9 miles north of Bequia, with regular ferries throughout the day, St. Vincent is one of the most naturally spectacular and untouched of the larger Caribbean islands. Below are examples of full and half day trips to some of the natural wonders of this island.
Kingstown – This historic city, known also as the City of Arches, is the capital, chief port and main commercial centre of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. It is a bustling city made up of spectacular arches and stone buildings, with beautiful churches and other historic buildings that are worth visiting when on the island. Here you can get a true feel of the Vincentian lifestyle when visiting the vegetable market and other beautiful sites around the city.
La Soufrière Volcano – St. Vincent’s La Soufrière rises majestically to over 4000 feet above sea level. This active volcano last erupted in April 2021, but has now gone back to sleep Tours to La Soufrière take you along the picturesque eastern coast of St. Vincent, through banana and coconut plantations and up the foot trail that takes you to the very top. The views from the rim of the crater are truly spectacular!
Vermont Nature Trails – Birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts will especially enjoy the numerous trails that lead through the rain forest in St. Vincent. Visitors have the chance to see rare and unique species, such as the St. Vincent Parrot and the Whistling Warbler.

When To Visit Bequia
If you want to visit the island at its most festive, plan your trip to coincide with the Mount Gay Music Fest or the Easter Regatta. Find the full Bequia special events schedule here.
For other island events including nightly entertainment at local restaurants and bars, be sure to check out Bequia This Week. You can find it here.
Personally, I also found the TripAdvisor Bequia forum quite useful when I had specific questions about the island. You can find it here.
Where To Stay In Bequia
There are no big resorts in Bequia. Instead, you can choose from a number of small hotels scattered all over the island or a growing number of private rentals advertised through Airbnb.
We stayed in a private holiday let, Bequia Bird House, located close to Port Elizabeth and within walking distance of many of the islands best beaches.

Take A Trip To A Neighbouring Island
If you are feeling flush and want to explore other Grenadines, you can charter a boat to visit neighbouring Mustique, playground for the rich and famous. You could also go to the Tobago Cays, a collection of small deserted islets which are one of the most beautiful areas in the Caribbean. The Cays are a protected marine park and offer outstanding snorkelling & diving. Another option would be Mayreau, a small island with only 600 residents that lies just west of the Tobago Cays. It is ringed by perfect white sand beaches and is an ideal anchorage for sailing and snorkelling.

Bequia, pronounced “Beck-way, is blessed with white sandy beaches, coral reefs, and friendly people. Port Elizabeth is a bustling yachting town. Try goat water soup, Bitter Lemon a popular soda and Hairoun the local brew.

Have A Look At The Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary
Based near Park Beach in the rugged, remote north-eastern part of Bequia, the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary doesnt receive that many visitors. Its worth a trip, though. The sanctuary has been working to protect the endangered hawksbill turtle since 1995. Orton G King is the retired professional diver who set up the project. He still gives tourists lively and entertaining tours today.
The Belmont Boardwalk And Princess Margaret Trail
Begin your morning with some gorgeous sea-views along a beautiful coastline-hugging walkway which exists thanks to the vision and dedication of a group of islanders known as Action Bequia. Part stone steps, part wooden stairways set spectacularly against the cliff face and part over-water causeway secured by concrete piers to the seabed, this tranquility-infused hike is now, if you choose to walk its entire length, three miles long. The result of several phases of work beginning in 2014, the Princess Margaret Trail stretches from the site of Fort Hamilton, passes through Port Elizabeth, takes you onto the paradise beach of St. Margaret and then continues to the equally gorgeous beach of Lower Bay
In 2016 hurricane Matthew destroyed parts of the trail which had been completed only a year earlier. Despite such a set-back, Action Bequia dusted themselves down and got right onto not just simply repairing the walkway but making improvements that would stand up to any future forces of nature thrown at it and all is now as good as new.

Go Diving Or Snorkelling
Two dive shops run trips to twenty-eight identified dive sites around Bequia. There are also several wrecks and shallow caves accessible to advanced divers. It is not unusual to see Hawksbill turtles, lobsters, moray eels and many kinds of fish. A natural reef lies off much of the coastline and is perfect for snorkelling. Check out this site for more information.
La Soufrire Volcano Hiking Tour
One of the popular things to do on the island of St. Vincent is a guided hike to the crater of La Soufrière volcano . Rising 1,234 meters above sea level, La Soufriere is St. Vincent’s highest peak. It’s still active, last erupting in 1979, luckily with no fatalities.
To reach the crater, you can hike the leeward trail or the easier and more popular windward trail . Along the way, you’ll learn about the uniquely adapted plants and animals, and see rainforest, cloud forest, and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Once at the top, you’ll also have a chance to explore the crater.
If you want to stay near the volcano, the budget-friendly Richmond Vale Diving & Hiking Center offers basic accommodation and guided hikes along the leeward trail that starts right at the hotel.

The Firefly Plantation And Sugar
After spending the first portion of the morning taking in the beauty of coastal scenery you can finish your morning surrounded by lush tropical greenery and orchards laden with exotic fruit at the historic Firefly Plantation just two miles north of Port Elizabeths dock.
With a history which stretches back to 1789 -the era of rich sugar cane estates on Bequia the Firefly Plantation is still today a working plantation but many things have changed since those earliest days when plantation work forces were principally made up of slaves forcibly brought to the Caribbean from Africa. Sugar cane crops such as those at the Firefly Plantation went into decline following emancipation in 1838 and farming, boat-building, fishing and rum production became the islands main industries with nothing of the cruel practice of enforced labor as before.
Today the Firefly Plantation covers a large swathe of hillside territory where a multitude of fruits and spices are grown in both completely natural settings and cultivated orchards. Oranges, grapefruit, banana, guava, cherries, breadfruit, plums and mangoes are just some of what you will find on this lovely 30 acres.
The Firefly Plantation also happens to be the home of Grenadine Wild Sea Salt and during your time here you can watch some of the processes involved in creating this product along with tasting some of the flavored gourmet salts for yourself.

Salt Whistle Bay Mayreau
Accessible only by boat, Mayreau is a tiny island of only 2.5 square kilometers with one of the Caribbean’s prettiest bays, Salt Whistle Bay. The bay is a popular spot for yachts, and its palm-fringed arc of white-sand beach is lovely for sunbathing. A few local vendors sell souvenirs and snacks along the shore.
The island’s only road leads uphill from the beach to a small village with spectacular views of the ocean and the Tobago Cays. Most visitors arrive at the dock on Saline Bay.
Things To Do In Bequia
Beaches and Harbors
The calm, clear and relatively shallow waters surrounding the beautiful island of Bequia make it the perfect destination for a beach holiday entailing sun, sea and sand. Princess Margaret Beach, located footsteps away from Bequia Villas is the most convenient and stunning spot for a quick dip or long sea salt soak. The white sands of Lower Bay Beach disappear into the ocean under an onshore reef, which creates shallow pools and perfect conditions for swimming, and small children. Avid sailors consider Admiralty Bay to be one of the best natural harbors in the Caribbean due to its protective u-shape, which guards it from the tropical elements.
Bequias Sailing Heritage
The best thing about being on an island with stunning natural harbors and protected shores is the endless sailing opportunities. The seafaring heritage of Bequia means boat building, sailing and regattas are a huge pastime and usually the center of social events and fun activities. If you love sailing then you wont want to miss the annual Easter Regatta and a trip to the Bequia Boat Museum to marvel at the marine based skills of past generations.

Bequia Hotels And Other Accommodations
As mentioned earlier in this post, there are quite a number of lovely Bequia resorts, B& Bs and other accommodations to choose from depending on your holiday needs.
If you are looking for something close to the main town of Port Elizabeth, the Bequia Plantation Hotel along the Belmont Walkway is a great choice. The rooms and villas have been recently renovated and rates include daily breakfast. .
If you would like something a little more secluded, the Bequia Beach Hotel on Friendship Bay is an excellent choice. They have a number of room options including their lovely Estate Villa . Both of the aforementioned properties have accommodations suitable for families.
Island Hopping Mustique And St Vincent
While Bequia has more than enough within its seven square miles to keep you occupied there are also opportunities for visiting neighboring islands if you want to explore a little further afield.
Lying an hours boat journey south east from Bequia is the private island of Mustique the principal Caribbean playground of the rich and famous. British royalty, rock stars, international tycoons and the screen idols of Hollywood make up the islands list of frequent visitors and property owners both past and present and one of the things which draws visitors to these shores is the chance of some celebrity spotting.
Ferry services depart from Bequia to Mustique several times a day if you want to do things independently but taking a boat tour is also an option. Such choices typically skirt you round the islands coast pointing out the luxury villas and exotic hideaways of famous names before depositing you on its shores. From here you can just lounge around on the white-sand beaches sipping cocktails, tour the island by car or head out for some shopping which as you might imagine on this island tends towards the exclusive, glamorous and luxurious.
Once manned by hundreds of troops, today visitors can explore the cannon-dotted ruins to see former barracks and visit the small museum housed in what was once the officers quarters.Besides its military role Fort Charlotte has also served over the long years of its history as poor house, leper colony, asylum and prison.
