Ernest Thompson visited Belgrade Lakes and the tranquility of the wildlife rich area, not to mention the fishing, led to his Academy Award winning play turned movie On Golden Pond. Is it possible that the varied souls he met in Belgrade Lakes helped to form his characters? Perhaps.
Fishing is a cherished sport in this part of Maine and it is enjoyed by the young, the old and those in-between. Lakeside cottages and vacation homes welcome residents and visitors year after year. As for history, Belgrade Lakes has tales of its own and friendly locals ready to share their stories.

Welcome To Belgrade Maine
Belgrade resident Norma Blazer boasts it’s wonderful to wake up every morning in a place where other people go for vacation. Shes right on both counts. Belgrade is an outstanding place to live. And, tens of thousands of people flock to the heart of the Belgrade Lakes region each summer to enjoy one of the seven bodies of water that make up the Belgrade chain. When the weather is warmest and the lush vegetation greenest, Belgrades population surges to nearly triple its normal 3,200 residents. Some seasonal residents stay or return in the fall for spectacular leaf-peeping around the lakes and in the panoramic hills.
The lakes, including Great Pond , are the main attraction. Their cool, clear waters offer endless opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, waterskiing and paddling. Loon-watching is a popular pastime on the lakes, whose banks are crawling with critters great , small , and majestic . Come winter, recreation upon the frozen waters turns to snowmobiling, ice fishing, ice skating and snowshoeing. Cross-country skiing and hunting are other winter favorites.
The Belgrade Lakes Region Business Group is another great resource for visitors and locals seeking information about local businesses.

St Michaels Cathedral Belgrade
Known by locals as simply the Cathedral, this Serbian Orthodox Cathedral was built in the first half of the nineteenth century and is one of the most important religious sites in the country. Its located near Kalemegdan Park and its distinctive clocktower can be seen from many points within Belgrade Fortress.
Although this part of Belgrade was never controlled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, this church looks remarkably like those in Zemun and Vojvodina, particularly its ornate clocktower that is out of place with the Orthodox interior. Inside, the altarpiece and interior artwork are more reminiscent of western European Catholic Churches than Orthodox ones, though there are still some indicators that this is an Orthodox cathedral, such as having no pews for worshippers to sit in. Likewise, the tower outside is done in the Neoclassical style more common in the Hapsburg empire than in the Ottoman-controlled portion of the Balkans.
