We hiked The Little Gunpowder Trail with pretty little waterfalls and a gentle little stream that wound its way along the peaceful trail! There’s a big boulder area with lots to climb and leap over for the more adventurous one in your group, like my husband! Even on an early Spring day this little trail packs a lot of scenic views to enjoy and soak in with cozy little nooks to stop and drink in the peace and stillness along the water’s edge!

This place seems like a nice collection of historic buildings, and it kind of is. However… the blacksmith shop was bristling with activity, and although we have seen many blacksmiths in action, it’s always kind of fascinating, so we watched. Next was a trip across the street to the mill, which was closed. It’s run by volunteers, but the person for the mill was not able to open up. So we wandered to the Miller’s house behind it, and talked about muskets with a volunteer there. My 6-year-old granddaughter was not terribly impressed, and was getting a bit impatient, so we took off for two other things, which both turned out to be fun. First, we walked down to the Gunpowder River which runs right next to the mill , and walked along the shore, across a footbridge, and across some rocks. She loved the exploration. The next stop was the mill’s general store a couple hundred yards away. Much more activity here, and there was a scavenger hunt for the kids, which turned out to be fun for her. It was a nice stop and a pleasant visit.

Friends, Calvin Lauf and Gary Rissling purchased a bar in 1992 and started the Cal and Gary Catering Company. Prime Rib was their signature dish. In 1995, they bought the Silver Spring Inn and the Silver Spring Mining Company was opened. The recipe for Sour Beef came with the purchase. In 1998, they opened another ‘mine’ in Bel Air. Also Irish coffee for me and a local brew for hubby. A local area clientele environment. Must wear masks in, no standing at bars and tables are set for social distancing. Celtic music playing in background and sports games on TV screens. Oh and tables & spaces at bars are sanitized after patrons leave. Doing a brisk business inspire of 2020 circumstances!
