Visit The Long Abandoned Dutch Reform Church Cemetery

This is another one of the best things to do in Beacon, New York if youre looking to get creeped out beyond belief for Halloween.

Because this abandoned cemetery sits high atop a hill that overlooks the always gorgeous, Hudson River. It also belongs to the Reformed Dutch Church here, an institution that was first established in 1859.

Still, a thriving congregation today, the church itself features stunning, Victorian-Gothic style architecture that is beautiful to behold.

However, dare to go beyond the church and youll find a cemetery filled with crumbling graves that date back to any time between the 1850s and the 1920s.

In fact, some of the mausoleums here are so crumbled that you can actually see human skeletons on the ground. So, if you have an unbelievably strong stomach then this may be a truly haunting place for you to visit.

Just note that the cemetery technically belongs to the church and sits just behind it on a steep hill. So, there are several No Trespassing signs that indicate that the church really doesnt want you here. Therefore, visit at your own risk.

How To Pack For A Trip To The Hudson Valley And Upstate Ny

We went to Beacon as part of a weekend trip during which we left from New Jersey and after seeing some family in Rockland County, NY.

The perfect luggage was our Away extra-large carry-on suitcases, which we stowed easily in the trunk of our car.

We like these suitcases because theyre lightweight, the zippers are great quality, the inner compartments and mesh pockets are useful and they even have a USB charging port built-in. These are a win for anyone seeking a new and modern suitcase for road trips.

We took our trip to Beacon in early October, and to be honest, it was a bit too early for seeing fall foliage and all the beautiful autumn colors!

In any case, it did tend to get cool at night, so we really recommend checking the weather, as temperatures can dip upstate, especially as months get coolers and as you might ascend in altitude.

Hiking Near Beacon Ny

Travel Guide: Things to do in Beacon, NY » NY to Anywhere

Another great thing to do in Beacon, NYC is to go for a hike. TheHudson Highlands are an undeveloped preserve of over 8,000 acres that are perfect for hiking and fishing. Depending on where you want to hike, you might need to get off at a train station before Beacon . If youre a seasoned hiker, youll want to look into hiking Mount Beacon, which is the tallest mountain in the Hudson Valley.

If youre just a nature lover like me in the mood for a slightly challenging hike, youll want to hike Breakneck Ridge. The first 30 minutes of the hike are extremely difficult the trail takes you straight up a rock scramble, and youll spend most of your time hauling yourself over boulders to get to the top. I hate heights, so I couldnt look down the entire time I was on the rock scramble, but once you get up to level ground youll be glad you took this trail. The views of the Hudson River Valley are stunning, and you can see Bannermans Island in the distance. I dont recall the rest of the trail being too difficult, its just those first few minutes that are trickiest.

Note: I dont recommend hiking Breakneck Ridge with children or small dogs, as the hike is very steep and requires a good amount of upper body strength.

Get Down To The River At Long Dock Park

Beacon & Saugerties New York ( NY ) – Visiting Main Streets with Ramblin’ Hudson Valley Episode 1

Beacon hugs the Hudson and making way to the waterfront Long Dock Park is a great way to appreciate the citys deep-rooted river ties. The man-made peninsula here comes coated with rehabilitated wetlands and meadows, on the site of an old 19th-century ferry terminal, which for many years thereafter served as a center for industry and, subsequently, as little more than an industrial wasteland. Today the park space has been brilliantly reinvented with walking paths, picnic facilities, and Scenic Hudson’s River Center, a center for education and programming themed around art, the environment, and folk music.

Make way for the waterfront George Trakas installation at Beacon Point for sunbathing, fishing, or simply soaking up the river views. If youre hankering to get out on the water, you’re in luck: The well-designed kayak pavilion here offers rentals and guided outings for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding through Mountain Tops Outfitters.

Impress Art Buffs At Dia: Beacon

Dia:Beacon in early spring

Though Im no art expert by any means, theres a reason that visiting Dia:Beacon is often at the top of lists for things to do in Beacon, NY.

For $15, you can spend time wandering around Dia:Beacons crazy extensive art collection . The museum, which opened in May 2003, is housed in a former Nabisco box printing factory and features art from the 1960s to the present.

Turn a corner and you might see something like this:

Richard Serras Union of the Torus and the Sphere, 2001, on display at Dia:Beacon.

Theres some photographic pieces here, like Dan Flavins art using fluorescent tubes and John Chamberlains work with chromium-plated steel.

Our favorite pieces at Dia:Beacon are Richard Serras enormous steel sculptures, where you can actually wander around inside them like Alice in Wonderland chasing that damn rabbit.

Where it goes, nobody knows walking in circles in Richard Serras sculptures

Of course, you may not love everything you see. As someone with a pretty bad case of arachnophobia, I was not having this NIGHTMARE-SIZED spider sculpture . Not sure what inspired Louise Bourgeois to make a crouching spider to scare the bejeezus out of people, but it certainly had its intended effect!

And if youve got trypophobia er, a fear of holes you may want to walk past Michael Heizers North, East, South, West .

I wouldnt want to fall into these pits
