Pro Tip: Save room for a yummy slice of homemade chocolate pecan pie or Italian cream cake.

Paw Paws Catfish House dishes out hand battered catfish, shrimp, poboys, and burgers with a Fish, Family, and Big Stories motto.

Neighbors Kitchen and Yard is a rustic hangout with a river view from the multi-level deck serving pizzas, draft beer, cocktails, and live music.

A Weekend In Bastrop: Friday

Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort One of the best places to stay in Bastrop is the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort so start your weekend here. This resort is as down-home Texas as you can get, subtly decorated as a Texas Ranch, the lobby just invites you to sit by the fireplace for a leisurely chat. The drive into the resort is fully of turns and hills, dotted with colorful wildflowers in the Spring. Slow down and roll those windows down and breathe in the clean air. The drive in begins to decompress you from a busy week.

Try to arrive in the afternoon and enjoy a nice stroll around the wooded property. Make sure to sit in the butterfly garden and say hello to one of many of the Hyatts animal mascots. Or spend some time floating around the lazy river with a cocktail in your hand. Its weekend mode for you.

First Friday Art Walk If you are in town on the first Friday of the month, make a plan to check out the Bastrop First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Bastrop. Local galleries, boutiques and small businesses showcase local works of art on Main Street. We really enjoyed the art from the local YMCA at Lost Pines Art Bazaar, which is also a beautiful boutique with fun gifts and a very unique Persian Rug collection look for the Ronald Reagan rug when you are there.

Visit Endangered Species At The Capital Of Texas Zoo

Heres a closeup look at a hippo, swimming on the water at the Capital of Texas Zoo located in Cedar Creek.

When you walk into the Capital of Texas Zoo in Cedar Creek, youve entered a whole different world. This isnt your typical zoo. This is a tiny, privately owned zoo manned by a very passionate, committed zookeeper who loves animals and wants to share them with the world. I love how intimate this zoo is!

Even though they have more than 500 rare wild animals, this isnt a gigantic zoo where youre running around trying to catch a glimpse through the enclosures. Its small, and as such, you really can pause and view the animals up close and personal. These animals are very well cared for theyre not cooped up in cages, but able to freely walkabout. You can really see the intimate relationships each animal has with the staff and zookeeper its really a beautiful place! I personally loved Tank, the 4,000 lb hippo, who you can help feed!

Bastrop, Texas welcomed us with open arms and I want to scream from the rooftops how awesome this small town in Texas is. Ive heard about Bastrop for many years but never took the time to go and visit this iconic city. I had a free weekend recently and knew it was time to pay Bastrop a visit and see what it was all about.

My sister and her son joined me and Bryce for a two night stay in Bastrop. I wanted to find fun things that were family friendly that we could all do and enjoy. Bastrop Visitors Center Looking For Things To Do In Bastrop Texas Start Here

Iâm a firm believer that every traveler who lands in a new city, big or small, needs to make their first stop the visitorâs center, even if itâs just for a few minutes. You might have your time in that city completely mapped out. You might have done your research and know exactly what said city has to offer. Go anyway.

In every visitorâs center, youâll find someone who knows and loves the city, amenities such as restrooms and a gift shop, and more. The Bastrop Visitorâs Center has an entire wall of brochures with info on things to do around the area as well as a gift shop that sells local souvenirs and other merchandise.

If youre visiting with kids, snag one of these fun scavenger hunts from the Visitors Center. Theres a nice prize for completing.

Whatâs really cool and unique about this visitorâs center is that it also houses a small museum. Included are the history of Bastrop and the surrounding area as well as an exhibit solely dedicated to the fires of 2011. You definitely get a sense of where youâre at by visiting this small but respectable museum. Admission is $5 for adults. Going through and reading all the plaques takes less than an hour and your ticket is good for re-reentry if you want to return that same day.

I found a couple of them, in the name of research, and theyâre not too difficult to find. Your kids will have fun with this one.

Where To Stay In Bastrop Texas

Pin on Places to Go, Things to Do

Bastrop is a great day trip length for us its an hour and change by car from our house. However, if you want to spend the night, you have options. In addition to the campsites available at Lake Bastrop, there are choices if youre not into camping.

I recommend staying at The Pecan Street Inn or the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa. These places donât have a lot in common so your choice will depend on your familyâs budget and what kind of trip experience you are seeking.

THE PECAN STREET INN

The Pecan Street Inn is a family and pet friendly bed and breakfast just a couple of blocks away from Bastropâs historic downtown area. All of the downtown shops, restaurants and the Riverwalk are walkable from the Pecan Street Inn. Bastrop State park is also just a short drive away.

The Pecan Street Inn has a ton of charm. Not all of the rooms come with their own private bathroom and you will have to leave your room to use the bathroom that youll possibly share with other people. Thatâs something that is inherent to B& Bs. Its all about what youâre used to and what makes you comfortable.

The room came equipped with fast Wi-Fi and Direct TV. There was also more reading material in in the shelfs throughout the house than Iâve ever seen in any B& B or anywhere outside of a library or bookstore. Kids toy and gently used bicycles available for use â just ask.

Big Bend National Park

Situated right on the border with Mexico, Big Bend National Park encompasses the whole Chisos mountain range as well as a significant chunk of the Chihuahuan Desert. Because of its remote location, the park is one of the least-visited national parks in the country, but anyone who makes the effort to get here will be well rewarded. The park offers approximately 200 miles of hiking trails, many of which wind through scenic canyons or bring visitors to breathtaking desert rock formations. Hiking trails vary in difficulty and length, but there are also plenty of paved trails for those interested in exploring the park by vehicle.
