10 Things To Do When It’s Raining!

The Rainey Street Historic District is one of the most unique places to go in Austin.

Formerly a residential neighborhood of old bungalows and southern-style ranch houses, its been converted into a hip, trendy community with bars, bistros, pubs, cafes, restaurants and even a speakeasy or two.

Lights are strung between houses and porches that have been transformed into outdoor dining spaces.

Live music spills out of the buildings.

In true Texas style, youre never far from a cold beer, especially at night when the sun sets and the cowboy boots get propped up on tables.

The Rainey Street Historic District is located in downtown Austin, so if youll be touring the hot spots of the city, consider a detour into one of the coolest little neighborhoods in Texas.

You wont regret it!

Watch An Indie Film At Alamo Drafthouse

TripSavvy / Austen Johnson

The Alamo Drafthouse is a unique movie theater that got its start in ATX and evolved into various locations in the city and many across the U.S. If you’re in downtown Austin, that outpost is in a funky vintage theater. While its slightly smaller than most Alamo theaters, you can expect all the same fun stuff: goofy quote-alongs, quirky theme nights, and food and drinks delivered to your chair. Choose the balcony seats for the best view.

Venture On The Ann And Roy Butler Hike

Those looking to get some exercise while seeing a mix of lovely natural and urban spots will enjoy the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail. This popular path passes by Lady Bird Lake, a 416-acre reservoir, as well as Austin neighborhoods, buildings, and cultural attractions. One option is to start your journey at the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge, with views of downtown Austin and the Colorado River. The popular 10-mile trail is named after the city’s former mayor and his wife.

Things To Do In Austin When It Rains

AUSTIN — Cloudy skies and wet weather send most Austinites running for cover. What can we say? We’re an outdoorsy, sunshine-loving bunch.

Most of the Capital City’s attractions involve swimming holes and food truck patios — but when guests come to town during rare, dreary weather, we still want to show them the best of our city.

So whether you’re entertaining family or just need to get out of the house, we’ve rounded up some things to do in Austin when it’s raining.

Alamo Drafthouse

Going to the movies may be one of the more obvious, dry activities, but Alamo Drafthouse takes it to a whole different level. Sip on adult shakes, munch on restaurant-quality food, and enjoy a cellphone-free theater.

Museum hop

While Austin isn’t necessarily known for its museum scene, there are some gems that are worth checking out. The Blanton Museum of Art on the edge of the University of Texas at Austin campus features a variety of contemporary art. For a dose of state pride, there’s the Bullock Texas State History Museum across the street . Also conveniently located on the UT campus are the LBJ Presidential Library and the Harry Ransom Center.

Chicken Shit Bingo

Ginny’s Little Longhorn Saloon has been keeping Austin weird for over a decade. Every Sunday night, patrons test their luck on a makeshift bingo board by buying a square and waiting for a chicken to deposit the goods on it. Even though CNN named it 2015’s must-see quirky destination, locals have been placing bets for years.

/ Check Out A Library

You remember libraries, right? Those big thing with books made out of paper? Well, Austin has one of the newest and best libraries in the world, right in the heart of our city.

Austin Central Library not only has six floors of books you can check out, but its designed for visitors to spend hours there. Im always blown away by the architecture and design of this beautiful building. Dont miss out!

The library includes 14 shared learning rooms where you can hold meetings. There are computers for use everywhere, and space for just simply lounging.

Whether its at a table among rows of books, or on one of the decks overlooking Lady Bird Lake, or on the rooftop, make yourself comfortable and get as productive as you wantwhile avoiding the weather.

  • Historic 6th Mural at 5582 N Interstate 35 Frontage Rd, 78701.

We were really disappointed to see that Hope Outdoor Gallery at Castle Hill has now be closed down. This is where we got our wedding photos taken.

Rumour has it that Hope will be reopening at a spot near the airport. If you like street art why not visit us in Fife, Scotland! This lesser-known area of our home country has an emerging scene worth checking out.

We never made it to the Cathedral of Junk but if you like art and trash it might be worth a quick visit if passing by .

Some of the murals are quite spaced out so this electric bike tour can cover more grounds than by foot.

Back at South Congress, youll see a large gathering at the end of a shop this is the I Love You So Much wall.

As the story goes, the artist spray painted the message, I love you so much, on her girlfriends shop wall after they broke up.

Observe Austin’s Famous Bats By A Bridge

TripSavvy / Austen Johnson

Austin’s most famous flying mammals make an appearance nightly from March to October, when 1.5 million bats fly out of the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue bridge just before sundown.

The best vantage point is the walkway on the east side of the bridge, but you can also bring a blanket and enjoy the show from the hillside below the bridge. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a canoe or kayak and watch the bats from the water.

Make A Splash At Barton Springs

Barton Springs is a natural spring for the public to sunbathe around, kayak, and swim in. Or sunbathe on your kayak as I saw some girls do.

Located in Zilker Park, there are two options for the pool. The first is to pay to use the swimming pool style spring which has a nice grassy hill to sunbathe on. The sun can get pretty powerful so remember your factor 30.

» Love the water? Check out our guide to the best beach towns Texas has to offer.

The second option is to use the area next door for free.

Dont make the mistake we did take the turning before the bridge and use the concrete hill for sunbathing. We were stuck on the muddy and stony ground which was fine with a towel.

The locals will laugh and ask if you went into the water

We walked there from the HI Hostel which took around 50 minutes and then cycled back. Save some cash a pack a picnic.

Wander Along South Congress

Dirty 6th is a cool, messy street full of filthy bars and definitely one of your first stops for things to in Austin at night but if you are looking for a street that is laden with seriously gorgeous looking people , see SoCo.

South Congress is lined with lots of vintage shops and delicious eateries.

On Saturdays, a pop-up market sells artwork and jewellery. Look out for the topless cowboy on a horse. Yes, that happens.
