Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
Straystone / Shutterstock
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is about a half-hour drive from Atlanta, so youll need to be comfortable taking a side trip outside of the city, but its very much worth the gas.
It has some of the most brilliant scenery in all of Georgia.
The river itself has calm, slow-moving waters where you can swim, raft, boat, fish and tube.
Ample trails wind around it for hiking and biking, and its groves are major points of interest for Georgia birdwatchers.
Other activities include touring the abandoned mills and factories that dot the rivers edge.
Some of the coolest are the charred ruins of a fabric mill that was burned to the ground during the Civil War.
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a top 10 destination in Atlanta.
It might not be quite within the city limits, but if youll be nearby, you wont want to miss it.

Fernbank Museum Of Natural History And Naturequest
Big dinosaur
The next morning, we woke up to a miserable, cold, raining day. We had hoped to start the day by exploring outdoors, but instead it was straight to Fernbank Natural History Museum. I had poured over the websites of places I had learned about online and from other bloggers and I thought this was the best fit for us.
We drove there easily enough. It was quite a nice drive with many beautiful mansions in the area around the museum. The museum itself was a bit of a disappointment.
It is home to the biggest dinosaur bones in the world, and the kids did like that. There was a special exhibit on Marco Paulo that seemed like a sign to go there as I have read a lot about him and his travels, but there just wasnt that much more in the museum. I didnt learn anything.
Dinosaurs at Fernbank Natural History Museum
In a way, it is a great pick for young kids as there are lots of stuffed animals and good looking exhibits which had them slightly more interested than they might be otherwise, but they were not that interested and neither was I. Their website had made it sound like there was far more exhibits in the museum. Once there, it felt rather empty.
NatureQuest
In reality, I have been to better play centers. The kids loved it, but they love any park like place. It definitely wasnt worth the $54 admission and that was with Z free if he was a bit older it would have been pricier!
Next stop lunch!

Plan A Vacation For Real

OK, you may be stuck at home hiding from the rain, but you can still dream of a warm, seaside resort or gorgeous mountain escape. Even better: You can make a game out of it for an exciting and fun rainy day activity. A rainy day activity, in fact, that’s a tiny bit educational .
Look at a map of the world, if you can actually swing an international vacation, or of the U.S., and let kids pick a location they’d like to visit. Have them research how to get there, where to stay, and what to do. They can create a budget based on plane tickets or house rental costs, make a plan of what sites to hit or local foods to try, and then sell their ideas to the rest of the family. At the very least, everyone will learn a little bit about a new city or country. At best, you may figure out your next family adventure.
If you’d rather make your time indoors feel more like a staycation, here are eight ideas to transform your home.
