Asbury Parks architectural icon, the Steam Plant is a place you should not forget to visit before going home.

This towering Beaux-Arts monolith was constructed in the 1930s to provide heat to the tourist attractions along Ocean Avenue.

The steam plant designed by New York-based architecture firm, Warren and Wetmore, still towers over Asbury Park to this day.

However, its been long abandoned but remains a popular place for tourists who stroll along Ocean Avenue to snap a photo.

Much of the oft-discussed Asbury Park renaissance focuses on new residential and hotel developments. In 2019, the Asbury Ocean Club opened. Towering over the cement-block building that houses the Wonder Bar, the 17-story glass tower contains a mix of million-dollar residences and hotel rooms which run in the $600-800 range.

Nearby is the more hipster-focused boutique hotel, The Asbury, complete with a rooftop movie screening area, bar and pool, and lobby decked out with art, records, and live music. Rooms range from around $300-600.

A more affordable option is the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel with many rooms below $200. This 100-year old Beaux Arts building also overlooks the ocean.

Founded by a broom manufacturer in 1871, Asbury Parks 150-year-old history is, well, sweeping rhythmic, persistent, powered by purposeful hands. An attraction for entrepreneurs, entertainers and vacationers from its earliest days, Asbury Park today personifies the saying, the more things change, the more they stay the same, as waves of businesses, bands and beachgoers continue to roll in on this 1.6-square-mile sliver of the Shore.

Like the sand on its beaches, Asbury Parks got grit but these days, gritty wont likely be the first word that comes to mind with a visit to what is likely the coolest hot spot along our coastline. And while it may be the one Shore town that screams Jersey! loudest, its also a town whose embrace stretches widest welcoming, inviting and wrapping its arms around the diversity of all who enter.

Around Asbury Park, NJ – New Jersey Reopening

The Silverball Museum Arcade is another Asbury Park destination thats popular for the young and old alike. Home to pinball machines that date back to the 1930s, its a quirky spot thats worth a visit. Or, if youre more inclined to get spooky, check out the Ouija Wall or the haunted objects and dolls at Paranormal Books & Curiosities.

Asbury is also known for its lively arts scene, and the area surrounding the beach is emblazoned with murals. The Wooden Walls Mural Project is responsible for many of them the Mermaid by local artist Porkchop located near the Convention Hall is a favorite. Galleries as well as public art and exhibits can be found all across town.

For shopping, Cookman Avenue is home to antique shops and boutiques like Rebel Supply Co., where you can grab some great vintage finds.

Boardwalk In Asbury Park Nj

Asbury Parks most frequently visited spot is the boardwalk. The famous ocean-front boardwalk was constructed immediately after the town was formed in 1871, and it continues to draw thousands of locals and tourists over 150 years later. People visit to explore a range of up-scale stores, nightclubs, food outlets, cafés, and movie theatres such as the famed Stone Horse music club and the recently renovated 1920s Universal Theatre, in addition to enjoying the fresh seaside wind.

The most famous venue in Asbury Park is surely The Stone Ponywhere the Boss, whose debut album is called Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J., got his start. Its still open today, playing host to shows by local as well as more well-known touring acts. Upcoming shows include Limp Bizkit, Kesha, Parquet Courts, and the Springsteen cover band, Tramps Like Us.

The Paramount Theatre also books big shows, and The Saint is a smaller, more intimate live music venue. More recently, the legendary punk venue Asbury Lanes, got a facelift and new ownership by iStar in 2018. The combo bowling alley and music venue now hosts top-tier acts on a weekly basis, and the attached eatery, Asbury Lanes Diner, is set to reopen on August 1 with NJ local and Per Se alum, chef Mike Dunston, spearheading the relaunch.

The Wonder Bar, which also hosts live music, is a beloved local dive with a happy hour for dogs. You cant miss this spot Asburys unofficial mascot Tillie is emblazoned in a mural on the facade.

Before Asbury Park became a popular beach destination, one of its unusual attractions people frequently visited was the charred wreckage of the SS Morro Castle.

People flock to Asbury Park to see the beached ship that was later on demolished for scrap metal.

In 2009, a memorial was built to commemorate the victims, survivors, and rescuers of the disaster.

You can visit the memorial in front of the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, while the ships bell is housed at the SUNY Maritimes Fort Schuyler.
