Museums In The Poconos
Formerly known as Carbon County Jail, the Old Jail Museum today serves as a historical glimpse into the inner workings of prison life in the 1800s. But its perhaps best known as the jail where seven Irish coal miners who were accused of being Molly Maguires were hanged in the late 1870s. Legend has it that in cell 17, one of the mens handprints is still visible on a wall, despite washing, painting, and plastering over it.
Built in 1861 for railroad mogul and Lehigh University founder Asa Packer, this is a great place to get an up-close look at Victorian Italianate architecture. Due to the pandemic, the mansion is currently offering walk thru tours during which you can see the homes original contents and learn about the history of the Packer family.
This one is great for train buffs but its also a great way to see the Poconos natural beauty without breaking a sweat. Operated by the Reading & Northern Railroad, rides here start in Jim Thorpe and take you on a 16-mile trip down a track next to the Lehigh River into Lehigh Gorge State Park and back, all on vintage coaches that date back as far as 1917.
Why You Should Go
The raging cascades of these falls amidst jagged rocks is definitely one of the premier sights to see this weekend when youre in the area. The adventure-filled terrain along the way is also a memorable hike and is an excellent pick for cheap activities to do near you.
Since its near the town, its a great choice for romantic things to do in Albrightsville for couples who are outdoorsy thrill-seekers. The challenging trail can be more fun when you have a partner to share it with.

Mauch Chunk Lake Park
Mauch Chunk Lake was built as a flood control project to prevent recurrent flooding of the town of Jim Thorp, caused by the waters of the Mauch Chunk Creek which runs under the city. The project was so successful that it was decided to build a park around the lake which would provide a welcome recreation area. Today the park welcomes vacationers from all over the state and beyond, who come to get back to nature and enjoy amenities like a campground and cottages, hiking trails, a swimming beach and great boating. There are 2 boat launches and fishing is permitting along much of the shoreline and from the fishing pier.
