Stroll The Empire State Plaza
On the State Street side of the capitol building, a courtyard of stones that resemble the stripes of a starless flag waving in the wind leads to the Empire State Plaza. Initiated in the mid-1960s , the square connects the capitol building to the New York State Museum, providing the downtown area with green space, memorials, and public works of art.
One of the most unique buildings on the plaza is a performing arts venue known as The Egg. While its certainly easy to see how the ovoid structure got its name, I think it looks more like the dish of a radio telescope cast in concrete than something a giant might try to crack open for breakfast.

New York State Women Veterans Memorial
Located next to the New York State Museum, the Women Veterans Memorial is a bronze and granite sculpture completed in 1998. The 8-foot sculpture designed by local artist Hy Rosen was erected in memory of the New York State women that served in the armed forces over the past two centuries as well as those that will serve in the future.
Surrounded by a grove of Japanese zelkova trees, the monument provides a place to take a rest during a long day of excursions and serves to remind people of the often overlooked role that women play in the armed forces and military conflicts.

I was never a fan of French toast when I used to eat dairy and eggs, but I thought Id give their vegan French toast a try. Oh my goodness, this dish turned me into a French toast lover! Made with almond milk, cinnamon, and nutmeg, this was absolutely delish, especially when topped with strawberries and crunchy granola. The maple syrup on top pleased this Canadian girl, too!

Lark Street And Center Square
One of my favorite and most fun things to do in Albany NY is simply walk around and explore the city. I recommend taking the time to wander around Lark Street, as well as Center Square / Hudson-Park Historic District. Walk around the city blocks between the Empire State Plaza and Washington Park. Youll feel like youre walking around a quiet area of New York City or Boston with some of the most brilliant architecture in the city. But, youre not in NYC or Boston youre in beautiful Albany. In comparison to the bigger cities, Albany is so underrated for its charming homes and neighborhoods. Im so pleased to shine some light on this wonderful city.
Many of the homes were built between 1850 and 1900. Theyre eclectic and colorful, ranging from elegant cottages to brownstone mansions. I adored walking around and admiring the homes and architecture, as well as watching the people of this neighborhood go about their days. Even though Im completely an outsider, I got the impression that this was a vibrant community of homeowners and renters alike, making up a vibrant community of residents and business owners.

Im sure youre pretty hungry by now, so its time for lunch. Head over to the Raw Juice Bar for a healthy and tasty meal. While their juices and smoothies look delicious, I opted for an acai bowl as my meal. There are delicious toppings, like banana, cacao nibs, coconut chips, walnuts, and peanut butter. Mine was bursting with flavor and was more filling than it looked. You can customize your bowl as you like it, too. Raw Juice Bar also sells kombucha and bars, in case you need to stock up on any snacks.

Walk In The Footsteps Of Alexander Hamilton
Alexander Hamilton, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, spent a good amount of time in the city of Albany during his lifetime. He married Elizabeth Schuyler, the daughter of the Albany-based Revolutionary War general Philip J. Schuyler.
The Historic Albany Foundation offers guided “Walking in Hamilton’s Footsteps” tours. The foundation also provides maps for a self-guided walking tour, which features several historic locations associated with Alexander Hamilton.
Among the stops on the self-guided tour are The First Church, where Hamilton’s in-laws were members of the congregation, and the location of a historic home at 50 State Street, where Alexander Hamilton argued with his rival Aaron Burr, which led to the fatal duel that ended Hamilton’s life.
What The Locals Say
I’d suggest the Albany Institute of History & Art. It has one of the best collections ever, of any place, of Hudson River School art, Thomas Coles, and so on. Their exhibits are always absolutely fascinating. And they also have Egyptian mummies. They fascinated me most of all when I was 12 years old.

Tour The New York State Capitol
While many state capitol buildings are stately structures incorporating thick columns topped with an impressive dome, the New York State Capitol in Albany looks more like a European castle. The white granite building on State Street is an eclectic mix of Italian Renaissance and baroque styles because five different architects worked on the buildings design over the span of more than three decades. When finally completed in 1899, it was the most expensive government building in the U.S.
You can take a free tour Monday through Saturday to learn more about the hand-carved statues that adorn the interior and the spirits that allegedly haunt the halls where four future presidents once governed the Empire State. Or, if youre more of a DIYer, this self-guided tour of the New York State Capitol is for you.
Fun Fact: When Theodore Roosevelt served as governor of New York, his fitness regime included running up and down the 77 steps of the east entrance.
