Peekamoose Blue Hole Sundown
A small path will lead you to this crystal clear swimming hole in the Catskills, where you can take a dip and cool off during hot summer days. The pool has a sloping bottom that is 10 feet at the deepest. For brave swimmers, you can even flip off of the rope swing at the deepest part of the pool.
To access the pool, park at the first official park sign after the one for Buttermilk Falls. Then, cross the road and walk in the direction of Buttermilk Falls, and you will see a little path leading down to the water.

Mirror Lake Lake Placid
Snuggled in Lake Placid, a small town in the Adirondack Mountains, Mirror Lake is famous for its sparkling water that beckons from behind the downtown buildings, loons float alongside paddlers and stunning panoramic views of the High Peaks from the lakes shore.
Here, you can enjoy the water by kayaking, swimming, fishing, biking, and walking around it in the summer and ice skating, dog sled riding in the winter. There is also free live music happening called Songs at Mirror Lake, which takes place every Tuesday evening throughout the summer right on the shore in Mids Park.

The Empire State Plaza
As Albany is the capital of the state of New York, youll find an impressive collection of buildings and monuments at The Empire State Plaza. Most notably, be sure to check out the magnificent New York State Capitol building. Home to the New York State Legislature, the structure was built in 1899 for $25 million dollars , which made it the most expensive government building of its time. Its also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in addition, its a National Historic Landmark.
I recommend walking a complete circle around the New York State Capitol to view it from every angle. You can also take a guided tour of the New York State Capitol building. On weekdays, you can walk in and join a tour without any reservations. On Saturdays, there are a limited amount of tours and you will need to make reservations in advance . Its also possible to take a self-guided tour with an audio guide on weekdays. All tours are free.
There are several other amazing buildings at the Empire State Plaza. One of the most unique buildings that Ive ever seen is The Egg. Its a center for the performing arts, and you can even look into catching a show while youre in town. The Egg looks more like an artistic sculpture than a building, and it appears as though a giant egg shaped structure is balancing on a small stem. However, the building actually transcends six stories down into the earth.

Lark Street And Center Square
One of my favorite and most fun things to do in Albany NY is simply walk around and explore the city. I recommend taking the time to wander around Lark Street, as well as Center Square / Hudson-Park Historic District. Walk around the city blocks between the Empire State Plaza and Washington Park. Youll feel like youre walking around a quiet area of New York City or Boston with some of the most brilliant architecture in the city. But, youre not in NYC or Boston youre in beautiful Albany. In comparison to the bigger cities, Albany is so underrated for its charming homes and neighborhoods. Im so pleased to shine some light on this wonderful city.
Many of the homes were built between 1850 and 1900. Theyre eclectic and colorful, ranging from elegant cottages to brownstone mansions. I adored walking around and admiring the homes and architecture, as well as watching the people of this neighborhood go about their days. Even though Im completely an outsider, I got the impression that this was a vibrant community of homeowners and renters alike, making up a vibrant community of residents and business owners.

Eternal Flame Falls Chestnut Ridge Park
It isnt uncommon to see fires caused by natural gas springs, but the imagery of a lone flickering flame under torrents of water make Eternal Flame Falls unique.
In addition to natural causes, hikers who pass by the falls will relight the gas pocket whenever it sputters out, keeping the flame in an eternal cycle. Hence the eternal flame in its name.
The best time to visit Eternal Flame Falls is during early spring as the waterfall is most likely going to be dry in warm weather, from late spring through fall. To access the waterfall, you can take the 30-minute hike from the parking down a moderate trail, but be prepared to get your feet wet.

John Boyd Thacher State Park
Just 30 minutes outside of Albany, the John Boyd Thacher State Park will provide your daily dose of the great outdoors. High atop the Helderberg Escarpment, you can hike over 25 miles of trails and enjoy panoramic views of the county. Hiking at Thacher State Park is one of the most fun things to do in Albany NY.
Stop by the Visitors Center to take a peek at their geological and historical exhibits about the Helderberg Escarpment. Then, grab a map and hit the trails. Its always a good idea to chat with a staff member at the center to learn about what trails might be closed or less ideal for hiking, depending on the time of year. As I traveled to Albany in early spring, one of the trails was closed and one was very muddy. Im glad that I gained that insight before heading out on my hike.
I ventured down the Paint Mine trail, which connected to several other loop trails on the way. I enjoyed scenery of the river and two waterfalls on the way. Funny story: it actually started to snow while I was hiking! I was there at the end of April and I thought that the icy weather was gone . As Thacher State Park is high up on the escarpment, it might be a little windier and cooler than down below. Needless to say, I forged ahead with my hike as the snow only lasted for a few moments. It was rather funny to have bits of ice and snow landing in my hair and staying on the ground for a few minutes.

Stroll Through Washington Park
Take a stroll, relax on a park bench, or enjoy a picnic at Washington Park. This expansive tree-shaded public park provides refreshing open space in the center of Albany.
Washington Park was created between 1870 and 1880 by landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, who created Central Park in New York City. The landscaping appears to be natural , which is one of the hallmarks of Olmsted’s design aesthetic.
The park features English-style gardens with spacious lawns, a five-acre lake with a lake house , a children’s playground, benches, and walking paths shaded by leafy oak trees.
Local residents enjoy the park year-round as a place for relaxation and recreation. It’s a popular spot to socialize with friends, toss frisbees, and play tennis or basketball. You can even go cross-country skiing here in the wintertime.
To honor the city’s Dutch heritage, Washington Park hosts a fabulous Tulip Festival throughout the month of May . Visitors flock to a specific area of the park that’s devoted to tulips to see the dazzling array of over 100,000 colorful blooms. Placards placed in front of the tulips identify the varieties. The festival kicks off with a traditional Dutch “Street Sweeping” ceremony and continues with tulip tours, music concerts, and a tulip sale.
