Dothan has come to be well-known for its many artistic and colorful murals, gaining the city its nickname Alabamas Mural City! These murals often depict scenes from the citys past, but you wont need to be familiar with Dothans history to appreciate them.
The bulk of the famous murals can be found on old buildings in historic downtown Dothan. Walking around the streets admiring the artworks makes for a great self-guided tour of the city.
Some of the more important pieces include The Steamboat Era on N. Foster Street, Salute to the Peanut Industry on the Liddon Furniture building, and Chief Eufaula: Creek Indian Removal on S. Saint Andrews Street.
Lowndes County Civil Rights Sites

On the road between Selma and Montgomery, we stopped a few places in rural Lowndes County, Alabama:
Voting rights museum: To better understand the 1960s civil rights struggle to register Black voters, we visited the Lowndes Interpretive Center, run by the National Park Service. Using photos, interviews, and even sculpture, the site tells the stories of voting rights activists and the violent reaction they faced.
Memorials to activists: Hayneville, Lowndes County is where voting rights activist Jonathan Daniels was murdered in 1965. Seeing the jail where hed been held, the courthouse where his murderer was acquitted, and a memorial to him, all helped us grasp this tragic history.
A roadside memorial honoring Viola Liuzzo: This is a woman who was murdered in 1965 for driving voting rights activists to Selma.

Hellen Keller Birthplace Ivy Green
Photo Credit: Wayne James | Shutterstock.com
Take your kids on a trip through history and visit Ivy Green, the birthplace and home of Helen Keller. The house itself is a simple southern home from the 1820s. Even so, with all the well-preserved details and mementos on display, visitors can feel just how rich the history is within its walls.
The famous well-pump where Anne Sullivan taught Helen the word water, the kitchen located outside of the house, and Helen Kellers bedroom are some of the portions of the home filled to the brim with stories from the past. Stories that the well informed guides are only too happy to share if your kid has questions!
This inspiring tour in Alabama for little history buffs and adults alike is simply a must. What better way to instill empathy and a sense of determination in a child than storytelling?

Legacy Museum & National Memorial For Peace And Justice

These two brand new sites make Montgomery, Alabama a must-visit location for anyone interested in American history.
Legacy Museum: You are standing on a site where enslaved people were warehoused. This emotionally gripping museum tells stories of Black people in the U.S. from slavery, to segregation, lynching, and mass incarceration. And it doesnt sugarcoat. In fact, to help us vividly feel this history, it uses life-sized video, photographs, interactive exhibits, public signs, and even art. For example, one simple but moving exhibit is a collection of glass jars, each filled with dirt. Each jar has the name of a lynching victim, a date and dirt collected from the murder site. And while this brilliant museum is intense, I think kids over 11 could handle it.
National Memorial for Peace and Justice: The companion site to the Legacy Museum, this is a moving memorial to lynching victims. Its located in a garden, about a mile from downtown Montgomery. Unlike the Museums broader scope, the Memorial focuses on honoring 4400 lynching victims, murdered between 1877-1950.

Burritt on the Mountain is set on a mountain overlooking Huntsville. The centerpiece of the estate is the magnificent 1930s mansion of Dr Burritt. Although Dr Burrit married three times, he had no heirs and left his estate to the city of Huntsville.
The estate now is now one of Huntsville Alabama wedding venues with great views over the city. It is also host to a set of original historic buildings from Alabamas past which operates as a living history museum.
One of the most fascinating buildings is a Rosenwald School one of the 5000 schools built between 1913 and 1932 to educate poor Black chldren. These schools were built with money from a Jewish philanthropist, Rosenwald, materials from Sears Roebucks and the ideas of African American educator, Booker T. Washington.
Among the Huntsville Alabama museums, Burritt on the Mountain is a living history museum which shows how people used to live in the days of old.
The Weeden House Museum is the oldest house open to the public in Alabama. The Weedens were cotton planters who used their Huntsville home as their winter town house. The house is exceptional because one of the 18th century Weedens did realistic life portraits of African-Americans of the time.

Alabama Vacation: Fort Gaines
Fort Gaines stands on Dauphin Island and offers great vistas and panoramic views for visitors to marvel at. For more than 150 years, the remarkably preserved ramparts of the fort have guarded the entrance to Mobile Bay, but due to continuous shoreline erosion, the fort itself has been designated one of the countrys eleven most endangered historic sites.
Today, the fort still has a blacksmiths shop, its original cannons and kitchens, a gift shop, museum, and tunnels. Guided tours are offered by staff wearing period dress a touch that truly brings history to life. Visitors can witness blacksmithing and a cannon firing demonstration. The fort was a key site in the Battle of Mobile Bay and it is indeed here that Admiral Farragut made his famous pronouncement: Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!
