Monument Of States Kissimmee Florida
In Kissimmee’s Lakefront Park stands an unusual monument known as the Monument of States. After the attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II, local doctor Charles Bressler-Pettis decided that the area needed a symbol of American Unity. He wrote to the governor of every state , asking them to send local rocks to him.
When he received the rocks, he made a tower, embedding the rocks into garish concrete slabs and labelled each rock with its origins which state it was from and who had sent it. Over the years, time took its toll on the monument, but it was repainted and revitalized in 2001 by local business owners and it is certainly worth a trip to Lakefront Park to see this curious cairn.

The Monument of States is a historical sight to see in Kissimmee and started in 1942 after the Pearl Harbor attack when Dr. Charles Bressler-Pettis, a local tourism enthusiast, wanted to build a symbol of American unity during the time of early World War II. He then began writing letters to the governors of all the states in the USA asking them to send him local rocks. They began sending him a variety of blocks of native granite, big chunks of quartz, small sized boulders, old fossils, pieces of old buildings, even President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent him a rock from his Hyde Park home. He then had it mortared into a pseudo-pyramid of concrete slabs. Each slab would have a rock encapsuled in it, along with the donors name and location. This moument is a unique one in the whole of Kissimmee and also the world.
