Fun Kids Activities In Toledo

Posted on Published: September 3, 2020

As school starts up again, many of our kids have to remain at home due to the COVID outbreak. When my son isnt virtually learning online, I have tried to get him outside to explore new places around town. I have created a full list of kid-friendly places to enjoy around Toledo for any parent who needs to find an activity outside of the home!

I chose locations within an hour of the Toledo area that includes some places over the border in Michigan and fun spots near Lake Erie. This list ranges from outdoor parks to explore, to museums that can be an interesting field trip for your kids to learn.

Another fun idea is to create a bucket list with some of these places to visit and check them off with your kiddos. This list started when Thomas and I began our bucket list and it has expanded from there.

Disclaimer: Some of these places may have restrictions during quarantine so be sure to check if they are open before going to each place.

After the hotel closed and underwent many transformations, the building was finally meticulously renovated and today serves as the home of distinguished tenants like the Toledo Opera and Registry Bistro. The main dining room of Registry Bistro is exceptionally modern with concrete floors and high cement pillars.

The ambience is not at all harsh, however, as the warm wood of the furniture, the soft gray of the walls, and the magnificent French doors that open to the outside dining space add warm and welcoming touches. The menu is another mix of classic and modern, and celebrated chef Erika Rapp, who works with local producers to stock the kitchen with only the freshest seasonal ingredients of the highest quality, expertly prepares delicious fare.

Aboard A Great Lakes Cargo Ship The Col James M Schoonmaker At The National Museum Of The Great Lakes

Toledo is located on the southwestern corner of Lake Erie, in the heart of the Great Lakes, making it a great place for the National Museum of the Great Lakes. The museum is modern and interactive it is full of exhibits telling the stories of people and industry on the lakes.

A visit to the museum begins with an immersive video introducing each of the lakes. There are several hands-on exhibits in the museum that kids enjoy. My son was especially interested by an exhibit where he piloted a submersible, video game style, through the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Younger children were playing with black foam blocks representing coal during our visit they loaded the blocks into cargo ships from rail cars and then used them to power a ships steam engine.

The real highlight of the National Museum of the Great Lakes is a self-guided tour of the Col. James M. Schoonmaker on the Maumee River. The Col. James M. Schoonmaker is a steam ship that operated on the Great Lakes for most of the 20th century, beginning in 1911.

Visitors to the museum can walk through the ships engine room and much of the beautifully-restored ships quarters. Kids can touch almost everything in the ship. My son had fun playing that he was the ships engineer down in the engine room. Later, while my son pretended to pilot the ship, I enjoyed the view of Toledo. The view of the city of Toledo from the top of the ship is one the best around.
